How to Visit San Luigi dei Francesi and See Caravaggio’s Paintings in Rome

To see Caravaggio’s three paintings in Rome, enter the church of San Luigi dei Francesi at Piazza di San Luigi de’ Francesi 5, near Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, and walk to the last chapel on the left: the Contarelli Chapel. The church’s visitor page says admission is free and no ticket is required. Its published hours are split between morning and afternoon, and special events can change access, so check the church’s own schedule shortly before you go.

The essential facts before you leave

  • Address: Piazza di San Luigi de’ Francesi 5, central Rome.
  • Where the paintings are: the Contarelli Chapel, the final chapel on the left side of the church.
  • What you will see: The Calling of Saint Matthew, Saint Matthew and the Angel, and The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew, painted between 1599 and 1602.
  • Admission: the church’s direct visitor page says entry is free and that no ticket is required.
  • Planning warning: the church publishes split opening hours and warns that special events may alter them. A separate Ministry of Culture listing carries a different, older schedule, so use the church’s page for the final check.

The practical route is simple once inside, but the timetable deserves attention. A midday arrival can fall between the church’s morning and afternoon sessions, and a date that appears open on an older government listing may not match the church’s current visitor information.

Where San Luigi dei Francesi is in Rome

San Luigi dei Francesi is in central Rome, at Piazza di San Luigi de’ Francesi 5. The church is close to Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, making it easy to combine with a walk through Rome’s historic center. Use the full street address in your map app rather than searching only for “Caravaggio,” since several Roman churches and museums are associated with the artist.

Plan your approach around the church’s name and address, then orient yourself in the piazza before entering. If you are already visiting Piazza Navona or the Pantheon, treat San Luigi as a short additional stop on the same central-Rome itinerary; do not assume that being nearby means the church will be open continuously through the day.

Opening hours: the schedule to use

The church’s own visitor page publishes the following hours:

Day Morning opening Afternoon opening
Monday–Friday 09:30–12:45 14:30–18:15
Saturday 09:30–12:00 14:30–18:30
Sunday 12:00–12:45 14:30–18:30

These are the hours on the church’s visitor page, not a guarantee that every day will operate identically. The same page says the church is closed on the morning of the first Wednesday of each month and that special events can change opening arrangements. Check the page at San Luigi dei Francesi’s visitor information close to your visit, particularly if you are travelling on a first Wednesday or have only one opportunity to see the paintings.

Why another official listing shows different hours

The Italian Ministry of Culture’s listing for the church says reservation is not required, but it displays a different schedule: 10:00–19:00 Monday through Wednesday and Friday through Sunday, with Thursday marked closed. That page was last updated on 30 June 2020. The discrepancy is therefore material, not a minor formatting difference: it affects both the daily span and whether Thursday appears available.

Source Published schedule How to use it
Church visitor page Split morning and afternoon sessions shown above; first-Wednesday morning closure and event caveat Use as the primary planning source because it is the church’s direct visitor information; verify again before departure.
Ministry of Culture listing 10:00–19:00 Monday–Wednesday and Friday–Sunday; Thursday closed Useful as an address and institutional reference, but its schedule is dated 2020 and conflicts with the church page.

The safest decision rule is straightforward: if the two pages disagree, follow the church’s direct visitor page and contact the church when your date is sensitive to a closure or event. Do not build a fixed itinerary around the older 10:00–19:00 timetable without checking for a current confirmation.

Admission and reservations

The church’s visitor information states that admission is free and no ticket is required. There is no ticketed visitor option established in the published information, so you should not expect an online timed-entry process for an ordinary individual visit.

The Ministry of Culture listing also says reservation is not required. That does not remove the need to verify access: a service, ceremony, restoration work or another special event can affect when visitors may enter even when no reservation system exists. Treat “no reservation” as an admission policy, not as a promise that every listed hour will be available on a particular day.

How to visit: a step-by-step plan

  1. Check the direct schedule. Open the church’s visitor page on the day you are planning and again shortly before setting out. Look specifically for the split sessions, the first-Wednesday morning exception and any event notice.
  2. Choose a complete opening window. Aim to arrive with enough time before the published closing of that session. A visit started just before 12:45 on a weekday, for example, leaves little margin if you need to orient yourself or if entry is briefly paused.
  3. Navigate to Piazza di San Luigi de’ Francesi 5. The address places you in central Rome, near Piazza Navona and the Pantheon. Keep the exact address available in your map app so you do not confuse this church with another Caravaggio site.
  4. Enter respectfully. This is a functioning church as well as a place where visitors view art. Follow any notices at the door, keep voices low and avoid blocking people who are worshipping.
  5. Walk to the last chapel on the left. Turismo Roma identifies the Contarelli Chapel as the final chapel on the left aisle. This is the key orientation point; you do not need to search every side chapel once you have identified that aisle.
  6. View all three works in the chapel. The paintings are a connected commission about Saint Matthew: The Calling of Saint Matthew, Saint Matthew and the Angel and The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew.
  7. Leave before the session ends. Keep the church’s stated closing time in mind, especially during the morning-to-afternoon gap. If the chapel is temporarily inaccessible, ask a member of the church community whether access will resume during the next published session rather than waiting without confirmation.

Finding the Contarelli Chapel inside

Once you are through the entrance, use the left aisle as your reference line. The Contarelli Chapel is the last chapel on that side. This instruction is more useful than relying on a vague description such as “near the front” or “beside the altar,” because it gives you a repeatable route regardless of which doorway you use.

Look for the chapel at the end of the left-hand sequence rather than stopping at the first side chapel. If you are unsure, ask a church attendant or priest quietly for “the Contarelli Chapel” and confirm that you are looking for the three Saint Matthew paintings.

The three Caravaggio paintings

Painting Subject indicated by the title Date range
The Calling of Saint Matthew Matthew’s calling 1599–1602
Saint Matthew and the Angel Saint Matthew with an angel
The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew Matthew’s martyrdom

Turismo Roma identifies these three works as paintings on the life of Saint Matthew and dates them to 1599–1602. Read the titles as a sequence: a calling, a relationship with an angel and a martyrdom. That sequence gives you a clear way to understand why the three canvases belong together before you begin looking at individual details.

A useful viewing order

Start by taking in the chapel as a group rather than concentrating immediately on one canvas. Then read the titles in the order above and consider how each episode changes the story’s emotional direction. Return to each work for a closer look, allowing your eyes to move between the figures, gestures and the larger arrangement without trying to photograph every detail at once.

The visit does not require specialist art-history knowledge. The most reliable facts to carry with you are the chapel’s location, the three titles and their shared Saint Matthew subject. If you want more interpretation, use a guide to Caravaggio or a Rome art-history resource as background reading; such material is optional and is not needed to enter the church.

Choosing the best time within the published hours

Weekdays

Monday through Friday has a morning session ending at 12:45 and an afternoon session beginning at 14:30. The gap is long enough that an itinerary built around a late lunch can accidentally place you outside visiting hours. Schedule the church either as a deliberate morning stop or as an afternoon stop, and leave a buffer before the relevant closing time of 18:15.

Saturday

Saturday morning access ends at 12:00, earlier than on weekdays, while the afternoon session runs until 18:30. If Saturday is your only option, the afternoon is the less compressed session according to the church’s published timetable.

Sunday

Sunday morning access is limited to 12:00–12:45, followed by the 14:30–18:30 afternoon session. A Sunday-morning plan therefore offers only a short window; the afternoon session provides substantially more time for a calm visit.

The first Wednesday of the month

The church says it is closed on the morning of the first Wednesday each month. The published information does not describe that as an all-day closure, so check the page for the afternoon status and any additional event notice before travelling.

Special events and unexpected access changes

The church warns that special events may change its hours. A web page showing a normal timetable cannot override a service or event taking place on your date. Recheck the direct visitor page shortly before visiting, and contact the church if a closure would disrupt your itinerary.

If you arrive and find access restricted, do not assume the paintings have moved or that you are at the wrong church. First compare the posted notice with the day’s published sessions. If the restriction appears temporary, ask whether visitors may return in the next session; if it is an event closure, reschedule rather than attempting to enter during the service.

Visiting as a group or seeking a guided visit

The church says groups may ask members of its priest community for a church visit during opening hours. The information does not promise that a guide will be available at a particular time and does not provide a confirmed booking procedure.

For a school, association or private group, contact the church in advance and explain your preferred date, approximate group size and whether you are requesting a guided church visit. Wait for confirmation before advertising a tour as part of your programme. If no guided visit is available, the group can still plan an individual viewing of the Contarelli Chapel during the published visitor session, subject to the church’s instructions on arrival.

Common planning mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Relying on the older 10:00–19:00 listing: use the church page as the current planning reference because the Ministry listing was last updated in 2020 and conflicts with it.
  • Arriving during the midday gap: check the exact morning and afternoon times for your day instead of assuming continuous opening.
  • Going to the wrong chapel: the Caravaggio cycle is in the last chapel on the left, the Contarelli Chapel.
  • Assuming a reservation is required: the church says no ticket is required, and the Ministry listing says reservation is not required; verify event-related changes rather than looking for a ticket portal.
  • Ignoring the first Wednesday exception: the church closes on that month’s first-Wednesday morning.
  • Planning a guaranteed tour for a group: group visits depend on the availability of members of the priest community, so request confirmation in advance.

Combining the visit with a central-Rome day

San Luigi dei Francesi’s position near Piazza Navona and the Pantheon makes it a practical art-and-architecture stop within a broader walk. The church itself may occupy only one part of your day, but the split schedule means you should anchor the rest of your route around a confirmed opening session, not the other way around.

If you are assembling a wider itinerary, leave a flexible block around the church. That allows for the morning–afternoon closure, a short wait at the entrance or an event-related change without forcing you to miss the Contarelli Chapel. A Rome guidebook can help with the surrounding area, but no book or paid product is needed to enter the church or see the paintings.

Reliable sources to check before you go

Use the church’s visitor page for admission information, current published visiting sessions, the first-Wednesday note, event warnings and group-visit guidance.

The Italian Ministry of Culture listing is useful for the institutional record, address and contact details, but its displayed schedule is marked as last updated 30 June 2020 and conflicts with the church’s direct page.

For the chapel location, painting names and 1599–1602 date range, consult Turismo Roma’s San Luigi dei Francesi information.
