Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe practical answer: reach Kelleys Island by privately operated ferry from the Marblehead area (and, according to Ohio visitor guidance, also from Sandusky), then choose walking, a bicycle, a golf cart, or your own car on the island. The Marblehead crossing takes about 30 minutes. For a 2026 trip, check the operator’s date-specific schedule and weather status, then decide whether your group’s luggage, children, mobility, and itinerary justify taking a car rather than renting locally.
How do you get to Kelleys Island?
Kelleys Island has no bridge or public-road connection to the mainland. Visitors arrive by privately operated ferry. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) says that privately operated ferries provide frequent daily service for cars, RVs, bicyclists, and pedestrians from mainland points at Marblehead and Sandusky. The ODNR’s Kelleys Island State Park visitor page is a useful independent access reference, but ferry operators, departure points, and sailing dates can differ.
Do not assume that a sailing shown for one mainland town operates on the date you need. Before leaving home, identify the operator, its dock address, the departure time for your date, and whether the service is running in the expected direction. The detailed fares and crossing information below come from the Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line’s Marblehead service.
Marblehead departure
The Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line lists its Marblehead dock at 510 West Main Street, Marblehead, Ohio. Its operator FAQ says the trip takes about 30 minutes. The crossing is short enough for a day trip, but loading time, queues, and the return sailing still determine how much time you actually have on the island.

The operator’s schedule page identifies its timetable as updated for 2026. The timetable is displayed as an image rather than as text, so check the live page directly for the departure and return times that apply to your date. The same page says service is weather permitting. Conditions can therefore affect a sailing even when a published timetable exists.
Sandusky service
ODNR also identifies ferry service from Sandusky. Because the available visitor guidance does not establish one universal Sandusky timetable or fare, verify the current operator, terminal, vehicle rules, and sailing date before routing yourself there. Treat Marblehead and Sandusky as separate departure choices, not interchangeable stops.
What does the ferry cost in 2026?
The Marblehead operator’s ticket page lists round-trip fares valid during the 2026 season. These are published operating fares, not a guarantee that prices will remain unchanged outside that season.
| Ticket type | Published round-trip fare | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | $26 | Ages 12–61; Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line, 2026 |
| Senior | $20 | Ages 62 and older; Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line, 2026 |
| Youth | $16 | Ages 5–11; Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line, 2026 |
| Automobile | $46 | Vehicle fare listed for the 2026 season |
| Bicycle | $10 | Bicycle fare listed for the 2026 season |
| Vehicle parking | $20 | Listed as valid for one month; a parking ticket is not a guarantee of a parking space |
The ticket page also lists military, vehicle-with-bike-rack, and over-tailgate-camper fares. Eligibility and current amounts should be checked on the live ticket page before purchase. Do not add the automobile fare to a passenger fare without confirming how the operator prices your specific party and vehicle.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Buying online does not reserve a sailing position
The operator states that buying a ticket online does not guarantee or prioritize a place on a departure. Boarding is first come, first served. An online transaction therefore simplifies payment but does not remove the need to arrive early enough for the loading process. The same principle applies to parking: the listed $20 parking ticket is not evidence that a particular space will be available.

How should you plan the ferry day?
Use this sequence for a date-specific trip:
- Choose the mainland route. Decide whether Marblehead or Sandusky makes sense for your lodging and driving route. For Marblehead service, use 510 West Main Street, Marblehead, Ohio, as the dock address supplied by the operator.
- Check the live timetable. Open the operator’s 2026 schedule page and read the image for the planned outbound and return sailings. Do this close to travel because the page says service is weather permitting.
- Confirm the ticket category. Count adults, seniors, and youths using the published age bands, then add any automobile or bicycle fare that applies. Check the live ticket page for military, rack, and camper categories.
- Allow for first-come boarding. Online purchase is not a reservation or priority boarding. Build time into the mainland part of the day for the queue and loading.
- Prepare a return plan before exploring. Note the return departures shown for your date. A day-trip itinerary that ignores the last practical sailing can leave you with no convenient way back to the mainland.
- Recheck conditions on the day. Look at the operator’s live site or Facebook updates as directed in its visitor information, particularly during shoulder-season or unsettled weather.
Because exact departure times change by date and are rendered as a schedule image, they are not reproduced here. Checking the live page is more reliable than relying on a copied timetable.
Should we bring a car or rent a golf cart?
This is the ferry operator’s own frequently asked question, and there is no single answer for every visitor. Kelleys Island can be explored on foot, by bicycle, by golf cart, or by car. Choose based on what you need to carry and how far you plan to travel rather than assuming that a vehicle is essential.
| Your situation | Option to consider | Why it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Light luggage, a compact itinerary, and comfortable walking ability | Walk | Walking avoids vehicle loading and rental arrangements when your plans are close to the landing and downtown. |
| One day, modest gear, and interest in active travel | Bring or rent a bicycle | The ferry carries bicycles for a published $10 round-trip fare, and official visitor information identifies bicycling as an island transport option. |
| Several stops, children, or a preference for open-air transport without ferrying your car | Rent a golf cart | A cart can reduce walking between dispersed stops while avoiding the automobile fare and mainland parking decision. |
| Substantial luggage, a longer stay, young children, mobility-related needs, or extensive island driving | Bring your car | Your own vehicle keeps luggage and child equipment with you and avoids depending on local rental availability. |
These are planning guidelines, not promises about availability, accessibility, road conditions, or rental terms. Ask a rental business about reservations, age rules, operating hours, deposits, and current prices. If you need an accessible vehicle or have mobility concerns, confirm the arrangement directly rather than assuming a standard cart or bicycle will meet your needs.
Walking
Walking is a genuine option for visitors whose plans, luggage, weather tolerance, and mobility make it practical. It works best when you have a small number of nearby destinations and a clear return-sailing plan. The island’s approximate dimensions do not translate into one standard walking route: the Village describes it as roughly two by four miles and about 4.5 miles from the mainland, while the Chamber describes an area of roughly 4.5 square miles. Use those figures as orientation, not as a promise of a particular route distance or travel time.
Bicycles
You may bring a bicycle on the ferry for the published $10 round-trip fare or rent one on the island. ODNR says bicycles are available from private vendors, and the Kelleys Island Chamber of Commerce includes bicycling among the island’s transportation choices. The ferry FAQ identifies a rental near the landing at Seaway Marina and other downtown-area rentals, including at The Casino dock; locations and availability can change. The 2026 Play and Stay Guide lists Caddy Shack Rentals for golf-cart and bicycle rentals.

Confirm whether a rental shop has the type and number of bicycles you need, whether reservations are accepted, and what hours apply on your date. A bicycle is optional, not a requirement for visiting.
Golf carts
Golf carts are available through private vendors. ODNR specifically directs visitors to private golf-cart and bicycle rentals, and the ferry FAQ mentions rental locations near the landing and in the downtown area. The Chamber’s trip-planning information also lists golf carts as an island transportation option.

Availability, age rules, hours, prices, and reservation policies are not uniform across vendors. Contact the business you intend to use before the ferry trip. A cart may be a sensible compromise for a family or group that wants to cover several areas without paying to transport a car, but it is not automatically the best choice for a short visit.
Taking your automobile
The operator lists a $46 automobile fare for the 2026 season, in addition to applicable passenger tickets. Bringing your car is most defensible when you have bulky luggage, child seats or other equipment, a longer stay, or a plan that involves repeated travel around the island. It also gives you independence if a rental vendor is sold out or closed.
Do not treat the automobile fare as a parking reservation. The operator separately lists vehicle parking at $20 per vehicle, valid for one month, and warns that online purchases do not guarantee a place on a boat. Confirm current parking procedures and arrive with enough time for both parking and first-come boarding.

What can you do on Kelleys Island?
The Village of Kelleys Island highlights the Glacial Grooves and Inscription Rock among the island’s natural and historic attractions. Kelleys Island State Park is another major visitor resource. Start with the Village of Kelleys Island for island orientation and attraction information, and use the ODNR state-park page for park visitor guidance.
Access and opening information can vary by site and season. Check the relevant official source before fixing your itinerary, particularly if a specific attraction is the reason for your trip. The Chamber’s Plan your Trip page provides maps, transportation listings, ferry-planning information, and a business-hours section. Seasonal hours should be rechecked rather than assumed from a printed guide.

Yes, the ferry FAQ says a dog may ride when leashed. That permission applies to the ferry. It does not establish pet policies for lodging, restaurants, the state park, or individual attractions. Check each venue’s rules before booking or visiting, and keep the dog leashed as required by the ferry.

What should you verify before departure?
A short checklist prevents the most common planning failures:
- Operator and dock: confirm whether you are using Marblehead or Sandusky and verify the exact terminal address.
- Date-specific schedule: read the live 2026 timetable and note both outbound and return sailings.
- Weather: check the operator’s current update because service is weather permitting.
- Boarding expectations: remember that online tickets do not guarantee or prioritize a place; loading is first come, first served.
- Vehicle decision: compare the automobile fare and parking logistics with bicycle, golf-cart, or walking plans.
- Rental confirmation: verify availability, reservation requirements, age rules, hours, and prices directly with the vendor.
- Attraction access: confirm opening information for Glacial Grooves, Inscription Rock, the state park, and any other planned stop.
- Business hours: recheck seasonal hours listed by the Chamber or individual businesses.
- Pet rules: confirm policies for every non-ferry destination if traveling with a dog.
A practical choice for common trip types
Simple day trip
For a day trip with light bags and a few central stops, walk or use a bicycle. Check the return sailing before setting out, and do not assume a late-day rental will be available without confirmation.
Family with children
A golf cart can reduce walking between stops without ferrying a car, while a car may be more convenient for child equipment, substantial luggage, or a longer stay. Compare the group’s needs with the operator’s automobile fare and the vendor’s age and passenger rules.
Overnight or multi-day visit
More luggage and a broader itinerary make bringing a car more attractive, but a cart or bicycle can still work if you confirm rental availability for every day. Recheck business and attraction hours because seasonal schedules can shape a multi-day plan.
