FFmpeg writes its log output to stderr by default. To see it, check the terminal or the service, container, or cloud runtime that captured that stream. To keep a report, use FFmpeg’s -report option or configure FFREPORT; to see output in a cloud log viewer, make sure the host is actually forwarding it. A report file on the server does not automatically appear in a cloud logging service.
Choose where to look first
The right log location depends on how FFmpeg was started. Identify the process’s launch method, then inspect the place that receives its standard error output.
- Interactive shell: look at the terminal where FFmpeg is running. If the process has exited, its output may no longer be available unless the shell session or a logging tool preserved it.
- System service or scheduled job: check the service manager or job runner’s logs, if it captures the process’s
stderr. - Container: open the platform’s task, pod, or container logs. These commonly collect process output, but collection depends on the configured runtime and log driver.
- Managed cloud runtime: use that service’s log interface only if its configuration captures or forwards FFmpeg’s output.
FFmpeg’s default destination is stderr, not a cloud provider’s log viewer. A cloud viewer shows only entries its configured collectors receive.
Save FFmpeg output to a report file
Use the timestamped report option
Add -report to the FFmpeg command to write the full command line and log output to a timestamped file in the current working directory. For example:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -report -i input.mp4 output
The report uses the program name and a timestamp in its filename. FFmpeg’s -report option also changes verbosity to debug, so the file may contain substantially more detail than routine monitoring requires. Find it in the process’s current working directory; that may not be the directory you see when opening a separate shell session.
Choose a filename and log level with FFREPORT
Set FFREPORT when you want to select a report filename and verbosity. For example:

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
FFREPORT=file=ffreport.log:level=32 ffmpeg -i input.mp4 output
Here, level 32 is info. Quote and escape the environment-variable value as required by your shell and FFmpeg’s delimiter rules. If the filename or value contains characters meaningful to either, test the escaping for the shell and FFmpeg syntax you are using.
Pick a useful verbosity and timestamp format
Start with info for routine operation. If it does not show enough context to diagnose a problem, try verbose or debug; trace is more detailed still. FFmpeg also recognizes quiet, panic, fatal, error, and warning. Lower-verbosity choices can hide context you need when troubleshooting.

FFmpeg supports level, time, and datetime log prefixes. A time or date-and-time prefix can make it easier to compare FFmpeg events with cloud logs or stream interruptions. The available options and behavior can vary with the installed build; FFmpeg’s online command-line documentation is regenerated nightly and reflects the newest revision, so consult the documentation installed with your build if an option differs.
Find the output in your cloud environment
- Identify the launch point. Determine whether FFmpeg runs in a shell, system service, container, scheduled job, or managed runtime.
- Check what the runtime captures. Confirm whether it collects
stdout, stderr, or both, and whether it retains or forwards them. - Check the destination separately. Look in the runtime’s log interface for captured output. If you created an FFmpeg report, locate it in the process’s working directory or configure the host to collect that file. The report file and a cloud log entry are different destinations.
- If logs appear to be missing, check the query and access. Verify the correct account or project, resource, time range, permissions, forwarding agent, exclusions, and filters before concluding that FFmpeg produced no output.
Google Compute Engine
On a Compute Engine VM, console output may not appear in Logs Explorer. Google documents a Serial port 1 (console) view on the VM instances page; serial-port output may also need to be enabled or routed to Cloud Logging. For retained entries, use Logs Explorer with the correct project, resource, and time range. Some configurations can use the Ops Agent to send application stdout or stderr to the project, but that forwarding must be set up rather than assumed. IAM permissions and the selected scope or filters also affect what you can see.

Containers and other cloud platforms
Start with the platform’s task, pod, or container logs, then confirm which streams the selected log driver or agent collects. AWS documents ECS and EKS routes to CloudWatch; Google documents stdout and stderr ingestion through the Ops Agent in some configurations. Those are platform-specific patterns, not interchangeable instructions. Follow the configuration used by your deployment.

FFmpeg logs report what the FFmpeg process says it is doing. Cloud host logs show the output the runtime or configured collector captured. YouTube’s live-stream health information is a separate diagnostic surface: FFmpeg output alone does not establish what YouTube received or displayed. For YouTube-side checks, use current YouTube documentation and Live Control Room guidance rather than inferring stream health from FFmpeg logs.

Common logging problems and fixes
- Nothing appears in the cloud viewer: FFmpeg may be writing to
stderrwithout a collector forwarding it. Confirm the runtime’s capture and forwarding configuration, then check its native process logs. - The report file is missing: it may have been written to FFmpeg’s current working directory rather than the directory you checked. Confirm the process working directory and that the command or environment variable was set for the FFmpeg process.
- The report is too large or noisy:
-reportimplies debug verbosity. For a chosen filename and routineinfolevel, useFFREPORTwithlevel=32. - Logs stop when the process exits: terminal output is not necessarily persistent. Use a report file or configure the service, container platform, or cloud collector to retain the captured output.
- Logs Explorer looks empty: check project, resource, time window, IAM access, filters, exclusions, and whether the relevant agent or serial-port routing is enabled.
- FFmpeg logs look normal but the YouTube stream is unhealthy: treat YouTube’s live health information as a separate check; process logs cannot prove what the platform received.
