To loop media in OBS, use a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. That repeats the playlist, but it does not fade audio between playlist items. For volume fades, you can automate source-volume changes with the Advanced Scene Switcher plugin; the trigger must match the moment you want the fade, and you should test it with your playlist before going live.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
- In the OBS Sources dock, select + and add a VLC Video source.
- Open the source properties and add the audio or video files to its playlist. A VLC Video source supports playlists; the basic Media Source is for an individual local file. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Enable Loop Playlist to restart playback when the playlist reaches its end. Shuffle is a separate setting and is off by default.
- If VLC Video is missing, install VLC. OBS requires VLC for this source; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
Fade audio with an optional plugin
For automated fades, Advanced Scene Switcher can run macro actions that change source audio. The plugin listing currently identifies version 1.36.1, requires OBS Studio 31.1.1 or later, and lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Compatibility can change, so check the current plugin listing against your OBS version before installing it.
- Install Advanced Scene Switcher and open its macro controls in OBS.
- Create a macro with an audio action for the source whose volume you want to change. Set the target volume and fade duration, then choose a trigger that corresponds to when the fade should happen.
- Test the trigger and volume change in a complete playlist loop. The trigger matters: a scene-transition condition may be suitable for fading when scenes change, but it is not automatically a dependable signal for the end of each playlist item.
A community example shows audio fading to 0% on a transition-from condition and back to 100% on transition-to. It demonstrates scene-transition automation, not a universal recipe for detecting VLC playlist boundaries. See the forum discussion.
Playlist fades and scene transitions are different
OBS’s built-in Fade is a scene transition: it changes from one scene to another over a selected duration. It is not documented as a per-track fade control inside a single looping VLC playlist. The VLC source properties document playlist loop and shuffle, not a transition between tracks. OBS has a feature request for transitions between VLC playlist videos, but a request alone does not establish behavior for every current OBS build. Check the controls in your installed version rather than assuming a crossfade is available. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide and the playlist transitions request.

Choose the method that matches the fade
| Need | Approach | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat a playlist without volume automation | VLC Video source with Loop Playlist enabled | Repeats the playlist; the loop setting does not itself fade audio. |
| Fade audio when switching scenes | Advanced Scene Switcher audio action tied to a scene-transition condition | Can change source volume over a duration; test the macro in your scene setup. |
| Fade at each playlist-item boundary | Plugin automation with a trigger that reliably identifies that boundary | The cited scene-transition example does not provide a universal playlist-boundary trigger recipe. Verify the trigger with the installed plugin and OBS build. |
Troubleshooting
- VLC Video is not in the Sources list: Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops at the end: Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- The audio does not fade between tracks: Looping and fading are separate behaviors. The loop checkbox repeats playback; it does not create a crossfade. Confirm that your plugin macro has a trigger for the event you actually want.
- The fade happens during a scene change, not at a track boundary: The trigger is responding to scene-transition conditions. Configure and test a suitable playlist-related trigger if your setup supports one; do not assume the scene-transition example detects track endings.
- The plugin will not install or load: Check the current Advanced Scene Switcher requirements and confirm your OBS version meets the listed minimum of 31.1.1.
