In FFmpeg, set the GOP size in frames from your actual output frame rate—for example, use -g 60 at 30 fps—then inspect the encoded output with ffprobe. The command sets an encoder limit; the frame timestamps show what was actually emitted.
Calculate the GOP size for your output frame rate
A GOP size is a number of frames, not a duration. Multiply the output frame rate by the desired interval in seconds. YouTube Help recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds; its guidance gives 30 fps at 60 frames as the 2-second example. The other conversions below are arithmetic based on those intervals.

Use the frame rate you are encoding, not a rate you assume from the source. If the output is variable frame rate, use timestamps to verify elapsed time rather than relying on frame counts alone.
Set the encoder option in FFmpeg
For a 30 fps H.264 encode, this command fragment sets a maximum GOP size of 60 frames and requests a closed GOP:

ffmpeg -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -g 60 -flags +cgop OUTPUTReplace INPUT and OUTPUT with your paths. For another frame rate, calculate the frame count first; for example, a 60 fps output targeting two seconds uses 120 frames. FFmpeg documents -g as the maximum GOP size, so the encoder may insert keyframes sooner. A configured value is not proof that every observed interval is exactly two seconds.
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, up to 60 fps, and CBR. Select settings compatible with your codec and stream setup; the GOP setting is only one part of an acceptable stream. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding.

Verify the encoded output with ffprobe
Inspect the output file frame by frame. This command reports the keyframe flag, best-effort timestamp, and picture type for the first video stream:
ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -show_frames
-show_entries frame=key_frame,best_effort_timestamp_time,pict_type
-of csv=p=0 OUTPUT- Run the command against the encoded file or a suitable capture of the stream.
- Identify frames marked as keyframes in the output. Compare their timestamps in sequence and calculate the elapsed time between each pair.
- Check that intervals are no more than 4 seconds apart, and aim for 2 seconds. Consider timestamps and stream-start behavior; do not infer the duration from frame counts alone for variable-frame-rate output.
FFprobe’s -show_frames option reports per-frame information, which makes it possible to distinguish the configured GOP limit from the keyframes actually present.

If YouTube reports an incorrect keyframe frequency
If YouTube Live Control Room reports an incorrect frequency, adjust the encoder’s keyframe setting and inspect the emitted output again. YouTube Help recommends sending keyframes every 2 seconds and notes that ingestion errors can cause incorrect GOP sizes. If the file’s intervals are correct but the reported stream is not, investigate the live encoder and ingestion path rather than treating -g alone as proof that the stream meets the target.
