A YouTube stream that freezes when OBS loses focus can have several different causes. First check whether OBS is still sending data, whether only a captured source has stopped updating, or whether YouTube has ended or lost the broadcast. Each points to a different fix; keeping OBS focused or minimizing it to the tray is not a universal solution.
First identify what actually stopped
When the problem happens, note the time and compare OBS, YouTube Live Control Room, the source, and Windows. A frozen picture alone does not prove the broadcast ended. YouTube advises streamers to monitor stream health and messages during an event (YouTube encoder settings and stream health).
- In OBS: Does its status still say it is streaming? Are bitrate or dropped-frame indicators changing? Is the OBS preview frozen, or only the picture in YouTube?
- In YouTube Live Control Room: Is the broadcast still live? Does stream health show a problem, or has incoming data stopped?
- In the source: Is the picture coming from an OBS browser source, a separately captured browser or application window, a media source, or a static scene?
- In Windows: Does the failure start when OBS loses focus, when the captured app is moved behind another window or minimized, or when the computer locks or sleeps?
Record what each screen shows before changing settings. The word “focus” by itself does not establish the cause.
Use the symptoms to choose a troubleshooting branch

If OBS stays connected but the picture freezes
When the source is an OBS browser source
A report in the OBS GitHub issue tracker describes browser sources stuttering after OBS loses focus. The reporter proposed a connection with Windows Efficiency Mode and process priority, but this is an individual report, not an OBS-confirmed general cause or fix. The report’s system details specify Windows 11 and OBS 32.0.4, so do not assume the same behavior applies to other versions (OBS issue report).

- Record your OBS version and Windows version.
- During a controlled test, keep the same scene and source active, then change focus away from OBS and note whether the source stutters while OBS continues streaming.
- Compare with a test in which OBS remains focused. Change only one variable at a time and record the result.
Treat process-priority or Efficiency Mode changes as experiments prompted by that report, not as established remedies. Do not infer that a source freeze means YouTube lost the stream.
When OBS captures a separate application window
Check whether the source application itself continues to display and update when visible. Then test whether moving it behind another window or minimizing it coincides with the capture freezing. A Reddit discussion uses the phrasing “OBS Capturing failing when i focus on other windows,” but user discussions are anecdotal and do not establish one cause or remedy (Reddit discussion).

Suggestions such as disabling hardware acceleration or changing process priority should not be applied as universal fixes. First establish whether the captured app stops updating, OBS stops capturing it, or only the YouTube viewer stops changing.
Tray minimization is not a focus fix
OBS’s documented system-tray options include “Minimize to system tray when started” and “Always minimize to system tray instead of task bar” (OBS launch parameters and settings reference). They control how the application window is minimized; the documentation does not say they prevent browser-source stutter, keep an encoder running through sleep, or repair network drops.

If OBS drops frames or disconnects
Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting rather than assuming the focus change caused the outage. OBS identifies an unstable connection or a configured bitrate that the connection cannot sustain as possible reasons for dropped frames (OBS dropped frames and network issues).
- Check stable upload capacity. Use the connection’s sustained capacity, not a short-lived peak, to choose a bitrate. The appropriate value depends on the available upload, YouTube’s limits, codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no universal bitrate for every 24/7 stream.
- Test network conditions. If practical, compare a wired connection with Wi-Fi and check whether the failure correlates with wireless instability.
- Review network software. OBS recommends checking VPNs, security software, and bundled network-management tools that may interfere with streaming.
- Use dynamic bitrate cautiously. OBS notes that it can reduce quality and does not resolve the underlying network problem.
- Consider Windows network options only when relevant. OBS documents Windows-only network optimization and TCP pacing options, and reports that some users have benefited in dropped-frame or disconnection cases. These are not recommended as a fix for every focus-related freeze.
For encoder settings, use YouTube’s current guidance rather than relying on old forum screenshots. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1 options, support up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Choose settings that match your codec and resolution, and follow the current recommendations on YouTube’s encoder settings page; changing encoder settings is not itself a proven focus fix.

Check what YouTube considers live after a disconnect
Sending encoder data and having a broadcast marked live are related but distinct states. OBS’s YouTube setup guide describes how broadcast selection, scheduled streams, and auto-start/auto-stop affect starting, ending, and reconnecting (OBS guide to streaming to YouTube).
In particular, the guide says that enabling auto-stop ends the broadcast after streaming stops and prevents reconnecting to continue that broadcast. With auto-stop unchecked, a broadcast may still end after multiple hours without stream data. These controls can explain what happened after a disconnect; they do not explain why focus changed the source or interrupted the connection. Check the current YouTube and OBS interface because the guide is community-maintained.

Test the fix without risking the live stream
- Use a private or unlisted test broadcast if practical.
- Reproduce the same focus change that precedes the problem.
- Include movement and audio similar to the real stream. YouTube recommends testing under conditions like the planned event, then monitoring stream health and messages during it (YouTube encoder settings and stream health).
- Record the timestamp, OBS status and log, YouTube stream-health messages, and whether the source itself continued updating.
- Change one setting at a time and compare results. Do not call a change a fix unless it prevents the same failure on your setup.
