How to verify missing-person claims and donation appeals shared on social media

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not reshare a missing-person post or send money until you can trace it to the relevant police force, the person’s immediate family, or Missing People. Match the identity, date, location, photograph and contact details against that original source; check whether the image and wording have been reused; and treat pressure, secrecy or unusual payment methods as warning signs.

Preserve the original material before reporting it, protect the missing person’s privacy, and update or remove posts when authorities confirm the outcome. The same disciplined process works for a poster asking for information and for a crowdfunding or donation appeal connected to a disappearance.

Why a convincing post can still be false or harmful

Social platforms make it easy to copy a genuine police appeal, alter a photograph, attach a different phone number, or combine an old disappearance with a new story. A post can therefore contain a real person’s name and image while directing tips or donations to an impersonator. Comments, repost counts and emotional language do not establish authenticity.

Even a genuine appeal may be unsafe to circulate in its current form. It may expose a private address, a vulnerable person’s routine, a family member’s phone number or information that could interfere with police work. Police.uk says publicity is sometimes useful but not always appropriate, and that online mentions can be difficult to remove once they spread.

Roku Streaming Stick HD with Voice Remote | Compact 4K Streaming Device for TV with Roku Voice Remote & Long-Range Wi-Fi - Free & Live Local News, Sports
  • HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

Use two separate questions:

  • Is the claim authentic? Can an official or immediate-family source be identified and matched?
  • Is sharing or donating appropriate now? Has the family or police asked for publicity, and are the purpose, beneficiary and payment route transparent?

A “yes” to the first question does not automatically mean “yes” to the second.

The source standard: police, immediate family or Missing People

Missing People’s 2026 guidance for content creators and influencers states: “Prioritise official sources: It is vital that you share or create content only based on information from the immediate family, the relevant police force, or the charity Missing People.” The guidance also says to verify every detail and not treat rumours or comments as fact.

Start with the authority named in the post, then find that authority independently. Do not rely on a link, telephone number or account supplied only by the post itself.

What counts as an authoritative origin

  • A missing-person notice on the relevant police force’s own website or a verified police account.
  • An original statement from an identifiable immediate family member, ideally one that points to police or Missing People contact details.
  • An appeal published by Missing People or another clearly identified organisation acting with the family or police.

An anonymous account, a newly created profile, a screenshot with no source and a repost that says “please share urgently” are leads to verify, not evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the core details exactly

Compare the social post with the authoritative notice line by line:

  • Full name and any stated aliases.
  • Age or date of birth, allowing for the date on which the notice was published.
  • Date and approximate time the person was last seen.
  • Last-seen location and any stated travel direction.
  • Photograph, clothing and distinguishing features.
  • Police reference, incident number or named force, where supplied.
  • The contact number or reporting route.

A mismatch is a reason to stop and contact the authority, not an invitation to “correct” the post yourself. Details can change as an investigation develops, but the change should be traceable to an official update.

  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

A practical verification workflow

Follow these steps in order. They are designed to preserve evidence first, then establish whether sharing or donating is justified.

  1. Capture and preserve the original. Save the post URL, screenshots, account handle, exact wording, photographs, payment instructions and visible timestamps. Keep copies of direct messages, emails, text messages and call details. Do not delete suspicious communications before police, a reporting service or the platform can review them. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) specifically advises retaining original documentation and communication logs.
  2. Locate the original authority. Search the named police force’s official website and verified social accounts by entering the person’s name and key details yourself. Check Missing People and an immediate family member’s original statement. Avoid clicking a contact link supplied only by an unverified fundraiser.
  3. Compare every identifying detail. Check the name, age, date missing, last-seen location, photograph and contact route. Record any differences and ask the police force or family to confirm them through an independently found channel.
  4. Ask whether publicity is wanted. Police.uk recommends coordinating with police because publicity is not always beneficial. Consider whether circulation could reveal an address, school, workplace, medical information, safeguarding concern or other sensitive detail. If police or the family have not requested public sharing, pause rather than assume that more reach is helpful.
  5. Test the image and wording. Run a reverse image search on the main photograph and distinctive graphics. Compare the earliest dates, locations and captions. Look for the same image attached to another person, an unrelated disaster or an older appeal. The FBI recommends reverse-searching images and stories in crowdfunding requests; Victoria Police recommends the same when content may be a deepfake or scam.
  6. Verify any donation appeal. Identify who controls the account, who receives the money, what the money is for, and what happens if the target is exceeded or the person is found. For a charity, confirm the legal name and registration number in the relevant regulator’s register. Contact the charity through a telephone number or domain found independently, not through the appeal’s message.
  7. Assess payment and urgency. Treat demands for immediate payment, secrecy or a particular irreversible method as red flags. Be especially cautious about cash, gift cards, virtual currency and wire transfers. The FBI says that when a charity or organisation requests those methods, it is probably a scam.
  8. Report and correct. Report suspected fraud to the platform and preserve your evidence. In England, Wales or Northern Ireland, GOV.UK directs people to the police or Report Fraud; in the United States, the FBI directs victims to IC3. Tell law enforcement about unsolicited ransom or payment demands, even if you did not pay.
  9. Close the loop. When police or the family confirm that the person has been found, update your post and remove unnecessary copies. Notify organisations or groups to which you sent the appeal. Police.uk warns that it may be impossible to remove every online mention, while National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) guidance calls for media posts to be updated and removed when the individual is found.

How to decide whether to share a missing-person post

Use the following checks before pressing “share.” A post should pass the authority and identity checks before you consider reach or urgency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Check Stronger evidence Stop or seek confirmation when
Source authority Current notice from the relevant police force, immediate family or Missing People The post comes from an anonymous, newly created or copied account
Identity and contact Name, age, date, location, photograph and contact route match the original notice Phone numbers, dates, locations or photographs conflict
Image originality Reverse search supports the stated person and date The image belongs to another appeal, predates the claim or appears manipulated
Privacy The notice omits unnecessary addresses and sensitive details and publicity is coordinated It exposes a home, school, medical information or a vulnerable person’s routine
Current status The police or family has confirmed that the appeal remains active Comments say the person was found but no authoritative update exists

If a post is authentic but contains unnecessary personal data, do not edit and repost it as if you were an authority. Contact the original publisher or police force and ask them to issue a safer version.

Privacy and personal-safety rules

Never substitute your own phone number

Police.uk says: “Do not put your own phone number on posters or social media as you may get fraudulent calls.” Use the police or Missing People number supplied by the official appeal. A personal number can attract hoax calls, phishing attempts, location requests and messages that put the volunteer or family at risk.

Limit what you reveal

Do not add a home address, live location, school, workplace, travel pattern, medical condition, passport detail or private family conversation merely to make a post more compelling. Blur or omit information that is not needed for a useful sighting. Never publish identity documents, passwords, one-time codes or banking credentials in response to a post.

Understand that deletion is incomplete

People can screenshot, archive, quote or copy a post before it is deleted. NPCC’s MEDIA framework asks publishers to consider privacy, realistic prospects of assistance, the extent of circulation, addresses and other sensitive details, and the potential long-term impact. Those considerations apply even when the original post is genuine.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

Reverse-searching photographs and stories

A reverse image search is a lead, not a final verdict. Upload or search the main photograph and any distinctive poster graphic, then inspect results for the earliest appearance and the context in which it was first published.

What to compare

  • Whether the same face is linked to a different name or country.
  • Whether the photograph appeared years earlier in a news report, stock collection or unrelated appeal.
  • Whether clothing, weather, landmarks and captions fit the stated date and location.
  • Whether a cropped or mirrored image changes the apparent context.
  • Whether fact-checkers or police have already identified the image as manipulated or reused.

Victoria Police recommends reverse image searching when material may be a deepfake or scam. Look for signs such as inconsistent lighting, distorted text, unnatural hands or mismatched reflections, but do not rely on visual intuition alone. A genuine photograph can be old, and a convincing synthetic image can still be attached to a false story; the authoritative source must resolve the question.

How to verify a fundraiser or donation appeal

Do not assume that a real missing-person case makes every associated fundraiser legitimate. Verify the money request separately from the disappearance.

Establish control and purpose

Ask, in plain language:

  • Who created and controls the account?
  • Who is the named beneficiary?
  • What exact expense will donations cover?
  • How will funds be handled if the target is exceeded?
  • What happens if the person is found or the expense no longer exists?

GOV.UK guidance says fundraising communications should state what the money supports and include the charity name and registration number where applicable. A vague request for “help” without a beneficiary, purpose or update policy is not sufficiently transparent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check legal registration independently

For a charity, search the appropriate regulator’s public register using the legal name and registration number. Compare the registered purpose, trustees or responsible organisation and contact details with the appeal. Contact the charity using a number or domain obtained from the regulator or the charity’s established website. Do not treat a logo, certificate image or registration number typed into a social post as proof.

Separate personal crowdfunding from charity fundraising

A personal crowdfunding page may not have a charity registration number because it is not a charity. That does not make it fraudulent, but it does mean you need clear evidence of the organiser’s identity, relationship to the missing person, intended use of funds and arrangements for excess or refunded money. A registered charity, in contrast, should be identifiable in the relevant register and explain its role.

Payment methods and pressure tactics

The FBI warns that requests for cash, gift cards, virtual currency or wire transfer are probably scams. These methods are difficult to reverse and make it harder to identify the recipient. A legitimate organisation may offer more than one traceable route and should not object when you ask for independently verified details.

Other warning signs include:

  • A countdown, threat or claim that a person will be harmed unless money arrives immediately.
  • Instructions to keep the request secret from police, family or the platform.
  • Requests to move from a public fundraiser to an untraceable private wallet.
  • Pressure to send identity documents, banking credentials, passwords or one-time codes.
  • A payment name that does not match the stated organiser or beneficiary.
  • Refusal to answer what happens when the person is found or the target is exceeded.

Do not send a small “test” payment to see whether the recipient is genuine. It confirms that your account is active and may expose you to further targeting. If you already paid, contact your bank or payment provider immediately, preserve receipts and messages, and report the incident to the relevant authority.

What to do when the post appears to be a scam

Preserve evidence before confronting the account

Save screenshots that include the account name, profile address, full post, comments, payment instructions and timestamps. Export emails or messages where possible. Record transaction IDs, wallet addresses, telephone numbers and receiving account names. Do not warn the suspected operator that you are collecting evidence, and do not delete the conversation.

Report through the right channels

Use the platform’s fraud and impersonation reporting tools, then contact law enforcement. For suspected fraud in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, GOV.UK directs people to the police or Report Fraud. The FBI directs United States victims to IC3. If a message claims to be from a police force or charity, notify that organisation through a contact method found independently.

Warn without amplifying

Do not quote-post the scammer’s payment link or repeat unverified allegations about a named individual. Instead, tell people not to use the link and point them to the verified police, family or charity statement. If the platform removes the original, keep your evidence; removal does not replace a formal report.

Updating and removing posts after a resolution

When police or the immediate family confirms that the person has been found, change the status of every copy you control and remove photographs, phone numbers and location details that are no longer needed. Contact group administrators, local pages and organisations to which you sent the appeal. Ask them to update or remove their copies as well.

Do not publish unconfirmed details about the person’s condition, whereabouts or reasons for disappearing. The family may need privacy, and police may still be investigating. A short update directing readers to the official confirmation is safer than adding speculation.

A quick decision framework

Use this sequence when you have less than a minute:

  1. Source: Can I identify a current police, immediate-family or Missing People origin without relying on this post’s links?
  2. Match: Do the name, age, date, location, photograph and contact route agree?
  3. Permission: Has police or the family indicated that public circulation is wanted?
  4. Image: Does a reverse search show the photograph belongs to this case?
  5. Money: Is the beneficiary, purpose and registration status clear?
  6. Payment: Is the route traceable, with no cash, gift-card, cryptocurrency or wire-transfer demand?
  7. Aftercare: Do I know how I will update or remove the post when the case is resolved?

If any answer is “no” or “unknown,” pause. Send the details to the relevant authority instead of increasing the post’s reach.

What trustworthy sharing looks like

A responsible share preserves the official wording, links or directs readers to the independently verified police, family or Missing People source, uses the supplied reporting number, avoids extra personal details and includes the date of the latest update. It does not add rumours, ask for money unless the appeal has been separately verified, or imply that comments are confirmed sightings.

Verification is not a delay that competes with helping. It is how you prevent a vulnerable family from receiving fraudulent calls, stop an old photograph from being attached to a new case, avoid sending money to an impersonator and reduce the permanent privacy cost of an uncontrolled viral post.
