To see which parts of an ended YouTube livestream held viewers’ attention, open YouTube Studio, go to Content → Live, select the stream, and open Analytics → Engagement. Look for the video-level key moments for audience retention report. Read its curve alongside average view duration and concurrent-viewer metrics: retention helps identify changes in attention across the video, while concurrent viewers show how many people watched at the same time.
There is an important catch for 24/7 broadcasts: YouTube warns that a stream lasting more than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need to review specific moments later, use shorter sessions, confirm that each has an archive and Analytics report, and keep a local recording backup.
Open the ended stream’s retention report
- In YouTube Studio, open Content → Live. Select the ended livestream you want to review.
- Open Analytics → Engagement. Find the video-level key moments for audience retention report, if it is available for that stream.
- Read the curve against the content. A visible drop marks a point where fewer viewers remained; a sustained section can indicate material worth examining for future streams. A dip alone does not prove why viewers left. Check what was happening in the stream and compare other metrics before drawing a conclusion.
- Allow for processing. YouTube says live-stream analytics appear within minutes after a stream ends, but figures are processed and despammed. They may differ from measurements in Live Control Room.
YouTube’s live-stream metrics guidance describes the available reports and metrics. The exact reports shown can vary, so verify that the retention report exists for the particular ended session rather than assuming it will be available.
Make 24/7 streams reviewable
Why a single continuous broadcast is risky
A continuous stream is not necessarily a continuous archive. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours and cautions: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That can leave you without a complete replay to inspect after a long broadcast. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Plan sessions around the archive window
- Where retrospective review matters, divide the broadcast into shorter sessions that stay within YouTube’s stated archive window.
- After each session ends, confirm that an archive is available and that its Analytics report includes the data you need.
- Keep a local recording backup if the footage is important. An archive or retention report should not be assumed to cover an unusually long stream.
YouTube does not promise a usable retention curve for every long broadcast, archive, or channel configuration. If the report is missing, total watch time, average view duration, and a concurrent-viewer peak cannot tell you which specific segment held attention.
Use the other metrics to explain the retention curve
Separate attention from audience size
Average and peak concurrent viewers describe the number of people watching simultaneously. Peak concurrent viewers is the maximum simultaneous audience at one moment; it does not show whether viewers stayed through a particular section. Use the retention curve for moment-by-moment attention, and use concurrent-viewer figures to understand audience scale.

Check viewing duration and reach
Review average view duration alongside views and retention. Then use impressions and click-through rate, where available, to understand appeal, and traffic sources to see how viewers found the stream. YouTube frames performance in terms of appeal, engagement, and satisfaction; these measures answer different questions, so a strong result in one is not proof of a strong result in another. Its Live content analytics tips recommend comparing the same content type because audience behavior varies by format.
Compare like with like
When assessing changes across sessions, compare streams with a similar format, purpose, and length. A documentary premiere, a continuous music stream, and a discussion broadcast may attract different viewing patterns. Comparing unlike formats can make a change in retention or duration difficult to interpret.

| Question | Useful metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Where did attention weaken or hold? | Audience-retention curve | How viewing changed across moments in the video, when the report is available. |
| How long did viewers watch on average? | Average view duration | Average viewing time, not a map of which individual segment held attention. |
| How large was the simultaneous audience? | Average and peak concurrent viewers | How many people watched at the same time, including the maximum at one moment. |
| How did viewers find the stream? | Traffic sources | Where views came from, as reported in Analytics. |
| Did the stream attract clicks from impressions? | Impressions and click-through rate | Appeal in the contexts where YouTube reports these measures; not segment-level retention. |
Check filters, exports, and changing definitions
YouTube Analytics can filter performance by Live, On demand, or Live & on demand. Depending on the report, it also includes watch time, audience retention, demographics, playback locations, traffic sources, and devices. Live-stream data can be downloaded as a CSV. Analytics is based on Video ID and is processed and despammed, so its figures need not match real-time Live Control Room measurements. See YouTube’s live metrics documentation.
YouTube says an updated Studio Analytics experience began gradually rolling out in July 2026, so the interface may look different across channels. Its content-performance guidance also says views began counting when a video starts playing across formats on August 24, 2026. Treat that date as a boundary when comparing view-count trends over time, and do not use raw views as a substitute for watch duration. Partner-program earnings and eligibility use separate engaged or qualified criteria. See YouTube Analytics help and its content-performance guidance.
