A continuous stream has far more time available to accumulate viewing, so compare time-normalized results and audience measures as well. Keep ordinary Analytics watch time separate from the qualified public watch hours used for YouTube Partner Program eligibility.
Choose what you want the comparison to answer
Start by deciding whether you mean total viewing or performance relative to the time each format was available. Those are different questions, and they need different comparisons.
- Total accumulated watch time: Which format generated more viewing during the same reporting dates?
- Time-normalized viewing: How much watch time accrued per hour a stream ran, or during a matched period after an upload was published?
- Audience scale and depth: How many people watched, how many watched at once, and how long they stayed?
- Monetization eligibility: How many qualified public watch hours count toward YPP? This is not the same as ordinary Analytics watch time.
Compare watch time in YouTube Studio
- Set one reporting window. In YouTube Studio, open Analytics and select the same start and end dates for both formats. If the question is which format accumulated more viewing this month, use the calendar month for both.
- Choose the matching content scope. At channel level, use the Live and Videos views or the relevant Live, On demand, or Live & on demand selector, where available. For one stream or upload, open Analytics for that video. YouTube says watch-time reports are available for individual videos and channels, including regular uploads: YouTube Analytics reports.
- Read watch time, not views, as the viewing measure. YouTube defines watch time as the amount of time viewers watched a video; average view duration is the average number of minutes watched. Views are a separate metric. YouTube’s content-performance documentation says a view-counting change began on 24 August 2026 across Shorts, long-form video, and live streams. Views should not be used as a stand-in for watch time or qualified watch hours: Understand your YouTube video performance.
- Use processed Analytics for retrospective comparisons. Live Control Room provides real-time indicators, while Analytics is processed and despammed and is based on the video ID. These views can report different information; if numbers change after a stream or a report is delayed, use the processed Analytics view for the final comparison: Measure key moments in live streams.
Normalize for the time each format could collect watch time
For a 24/7 stream
Report the stream’s total watch time for the chosen date window, then divide by the number of hours it was actually streaming during that window. Label the result clearly as your own calculated rate, such as watch hours per stream-hour; it is not a standard YouTube metric. If you compare full months, account for the different number of days in each month or report the period’s total stream-hours alongside the rate.
For a regular upload
Compare uploads over the same age window after publication—for example, each video’s first seven days—rather than comparing one new upload with another that has been available for months. If you also compare a stream and an upload in a calendar-date window, state that the stream may have been available throughout more of that window.

These normalizations answer different questions from total watch time. Total watch time tells you which format accumulated more viewing in the selected dates; a per-hour or matched-age comparison helps interpret the result in light of availability.
Example: viewer-hours from concurrent viewers
If a stream averages two concurrent viewers for 24 hours, the rough accumulated viewing is 48 viewer-hours (2 Ă— 24). This is arithmetic, not a YouTube benchmark or a reported Studio result. Actual Analytics figures can differ because viewer behavior, processing, and platform definitions affect the reported data.

Add audience scale and viewing depth
Total watch time alone does not show how many people watched or how long they stayed. Use the measures that answer those questions, and compare similar content and audience periods where possible.

YouTube’s post-stream snapshot includes total watch time, stream duration, peak concurrent viewers, and average view duration. Studio also reports average and peak concurrent viewers. For documentation on these live metrics, see YouTube’s live-stream metrics guidance.

Keep Analytics watch time separate from YPP-qualified hours
Ordinary watch time in Analytics is not automatically qualified public watch hours for monetization eligibility. YouTube’s published watch-hour eligibility route lists 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months; its alternative route lists 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. For the watch-hour route, YouTube says qualifying hours come from public long-form videos and excludes private, unlisted, deleted, ad-campaign, and Shorts watch time, as well as livestream content that is unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD. Thresholds and rules can change, so check your current Earn page and YouTube’s eligibility details: YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility.
Make the comparison useful
- State the reporting dates and whether the figures are channel-level or for selected videos.
- Show total watch time and, where useful, the time-normalized calculation with its formula.
- Include stream duration or hours streamed so readers can interpret a stream’s total.
- Add audience measures such as average view duration, concurrent viewers, unique viewers, and retention where available.
- Use processed Studio Analytics for the retrospective comparison, rather than mixing it with real-time Live Control Room figures.
- Label YPP-qualified public watch hours separately from ordinary Analytics watch time.
