To use XSplit Broadcaster as a webcam, add your camera as a source, arrange it in a scene, then select XSplit Broadcaster as the camera in your video-call app. The virtual camera sends Broadcaster’s canvas (up to 1080p) to apps such as Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and Discord. You do not need a separate webcam if your computer already has a usable camera.

Set up XSplit as your webcam

  1. Open XSplit Broadcaster and choose Add Source → Camera / Capture Card. Select your connected webcam or camera.
  2. Arrange the camera in the scene. Add other sources or visuals if you want them included in the call.
  3. Open the video or camera settings in your meeting app and choose XSplit Broadcaster as the camera. XSplit names Google Meet, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams as examples; its product page also names Discord. The exact menu varies by app and may change after updates.

The selected output is normally the current Live Scene. To send a different scene, use Playout → Virtual Camera and choose the scene you want.

Choose the scene and set up audio

Send the right scene

Build the scene you want callers to see before selecting it as the virtual-camera output. If you route a specific scene through Playout → Virtual Camera, confirm that scene is the one you intend to show; the call app receives the scene, not a separate direct feed from the camera.

Route scene audio when needed

Video and audio are separate selections in the call app. To send audio from Broadcaster, select XSplit Audio (Broadcaster) as the meeting app’s microphone.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • In Presentation Sources audio capture mode, add the microphone or headset as an Audio Device source, or set it as a Global Recording Device in the Audio Mixer.
  • In System Devices mode, configure the default microphone in Audio Settings. Adding that same microphone again can create echo.

Resolution, backgrounds, and camera controls

Resolution limit

The virtual camera follows Broadcaster’s current canvas resolution, up to 1080p. The conferencing app may impose a lower limit or downscale the feed, so a 1080p canvas does not guarantee that every participant receives 1080p video.

Background removal

For supported camera sources, open Camera Source Settings → Background Removal to configure automatic background removal. The support guide describes quality and hardware-acceleration options; you can add a Background source to replace the removed backdrop with an image.

Image and exposure controls

Depending on the camera, Broadcaster may expose video size, frame rate, brightness, gain, contrast, zoom, tilt, focus, and saturation. If lighting changes cause flicker, XSplit recommends disabling auto-white balance or auto-exposure where those controls are available.

Mirrored preview

Google Meet mirrors the local preview by default, while participants see the video in the correct orientation. That behavior is specific to Meet’s preview and should not be assumed for every calling app.

Windows requirements and license limits

XSplit’s support documentation, accessed October 3, 2026, lists Broadcaster as Windows-only and specifies these vendor requirements for the current version:

  • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. Windows 8.1 and earlier are no longer supported by the current version.
  • At least a 2nd Generation Intel Core i5 processor or equivalent.
  • 8 GB RAM.
  • A GeForce- or Radeon-class graphics card supporting DirectX 10.1 or better.
  • 250 MB available storage and broadband internet.

These are XSplit’s stated requirements, not independent performance tests. XSplit’s FAQ says the free license includes a watermarked virtual-camera feature and lists other free-tier restrictions. Check XSplit’s current license comparison for the restrictions and paid-license terms that apply to your version.

Do you need a separate webcam?

No, not for the basic setup if you already have a usable built-in or connected camera. XSplit documents adding built-in and USB-connected webcams as sources. An external webcam is an optional upgrade if you do not have a camera or want different image quality; a capture card, separate microphone, lighting, and tripod are not prerequisites for sending a camera scene to a call.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect XSplit camera

  • XSplit Broadcaster does not appear in the app’s camera list: Check that Broadcaster is open, the camera source is in a scene, and the app’s camera selector is set to XSplit Broadcaster. Menu names differ across apps.
  • The call shows the wrong scene: Check the current Live Scene, or choose the intended output with Playout → Virtual Camera.
  • Callers cannot hear the scene audio: Select XSplit Audio (Broadcaster) as the call’s microphone and check the capture-mode-specific microphone configuration above.
  • Callers hear an echo: In System Devices mode, make sure the same microphone has not also been added separately as an audio source.
  • The image looks softer than expected: Confirm Broadcaster’s canvas resolution and remember that the call app may lower or downscale it.
  • The background flickers as lighting changes: If available for the camera, disable auto-white balance or auto-exposure.

Or let it run in the cloud

XSplit’s virtual camera is for sending a scene to a video-call app. If your separate goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a different tool: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only, not from a camera; see StreamNeo for details. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
