How to Prepare and Loop Videos for an Always-On YouTube Stream on a Raspberry Pi

Use FFmpeg to loop and pace a prerecorded file for YouTube Live from a Raspberry Pi, then test the video, audio, upload, and stream health before leaving it unattended.

To prepare prerecorded videos for a Raspberry Pi YouTube Live stream, check the source file, choose an output profile your Pi and internet connection can sustain, then use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 and -re options to loop and pace the file. Send the output to the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, test it, and monitor stream health. An encoder can transmit continuously, but YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; the available guidance does not establish what happens to longer broadcasts.

How do I prepare and loop videos for an always-on YouTube stream on a Raspberry Pi? The steps below cover the file, settings, FFmpeg workflow, YouTube connection, and checks to make before leaving the Pi unattended.

1. Check the video and your right to stream it

Choose the video and audio you want viewers to hear and see. Make sure you have permission to stream both; this is practical rights guidance, not legal advice.

Before configuring FFmpeg, play the file from beginning to end and confirm that the picture, soundtrack, duration, resolution, and frame rate are as intended. Check that audio is present throughout and that the end of the file will transition acceptably back to its beginning. A hard cut or a pause at the loop point may be noticeable to viewers.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the file already has the codecs and settings you intend to send, avoid adding a real-time conversion without a reason. If you do need to re-encode, test the exact file and command on the target Pi: the official guidance cited here does not establish FFmpeg conversion throughput for each Raspberry Pi model.

2. Choose YouTube Live output settings

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS as streaming protocols; H.264, H.265, and AV1 as video codec options; constant bitrate encoding; and AAC or MP3 audio. For a straightforward SDR H.264 stream, use the following YouTube Help recommendations as starting points, not guarantees of performance on a particular Pi or connection.

Output profile YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate When to consider it
720p30 8 Mbps Choose it when its lower upload requirement is useful and 720p detail is adequate.
1080p30 14 Mbps Choose it when you want more detail and can sustain the higher upload rate.

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its recommended advanced audio settings include 128 Kbps stereo audio at a 44.1 kHz sample rate. These are YouTube’s published settings, not measurements of Raspberry Pi performance.

Pick a bitrate your upload connection can maintain with headroom. Run a speed test, then test a representative stream with motion and audio; a speed-test result alone does not prove the stream will remain healthy under real conditions. YouTube’s encoder guidance puts it plainly: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

3. Loop and pace the file with FFmpeg

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 to loop an input indefinitely and -re to read a file at its native frame rate, which is useful for live output. These are input options, so place them before the corresponding input file argument.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "PATH_TO_VIDEO" [VIDEO_AND_AUDIO_OPTIONS] -f flv "rtmp://SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"

Replace PATH_TO_VIDEO with the media file’s path. Replace SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY with the server URL and private key from YouTube Live Control Room. The bracketed options are deliberately not a universal command: the right output settings and whether to copy or re-encode audio and video depend on the source file, installed FFmpeg build, and ingest destination. Confirm that your output matches the profile you selected before relying on it.

  • Keep the stream key private. Do not include a real key in a public tutorial, screenshot, shared script, or support post.
  • Use stream-copy only if the source streams are suitable for the intended output; otherwise configure an appropriate conversion and test whether the Pi can sustain it.
  • Check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s preview during the test. A command that starts successfully is not proof that the stream is arriving cleanly.

See the FFmpeg documentation for the options and details relevant to the installed version.

4. Connect the encoder in YouTube Studio

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select a stream in Live Control Room.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown there into the FFmpeg output destination. Treat the key like a password.
  3. Start FFmpeg on the Raspberry Pi and wait for the Live Control Room preview to appear.
  4. For a scheduled broadcast, use Live Control Room’s Go Live control after the preview appears.

YouTube’s setup instructions explain the encoder connection and broadcast controls: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

5. Test the stream and monitor it

Before leaving the Pi running unattended, test the complete workflow with a representative section containing both motion and audio. Check the following while it runs:

6. What Raspberry Pi 5 changes—and what it does not prove

Raspberry Pi’s rpicam-vid documentation says Pi 5 uses software video encoders. It describes a --low-latency option that outputs frames more quickly, with slightly reduced coding efficiency and potentially a slightly lower maximum frame rate; the same documentation says Pi 5 can still easily achieve 1080p30.

That documentation is about the rpicam-vid camera utility, not a benchmark of prerecorded-file looping through FFmpeg. It does not establish a minimum Pi model or prove that a particular file, conversion, audio track, and network will work continuously. Test your exact workload on the board you plan to use. 7. Plan around YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not state what happens to broadcasts longer than 12 hours, so do not assume one broadcast will run indefinitely or that its archive will behave the same way. Continuous transmission from the Pi and YouTube’s broadcast and archive lifecycle are separate concerns. If you need a channel to remain live beyond that documented archive window, plan and test the broadcast schedule rather than treating an infinite FFmpeg input loop as proof of an endless YouTube event.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want prerecorded video to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a Pi or other computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing needs to stay on at home once the cloud stream is set up.
  • One flat price per slot covers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required; the free day is one per account.

Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free day.
