To stream through Wowza Video, first confirm that the service is available for your account, then create a live stream, connect a camera or encoder, choose an output mode, and share a hosted viewing page or embed. One important caveat: Wowza’s documentation index describes its cloud-hosted service as legacy, so check current account availability and regional features before building a production workflow.
Before you set up: verify access and availability
Wowza’s detailed setup guides remain published, but its documentation index labels the cloud-hosted service legacy. That does not establish that every account is unavailable; it does mean you should confirm that your account can create a stream and that the region and features you need are offered before preparing an event. Current sales eligibility, prices, and the feature matrix for every region are not established in the cited setup material. Wowza documentation index
Create a live stream in Wowza Video
- Open the quick-start workflow. In Wowza Video, go to Live streams, choose Add new, then Go Live Now.
- Name the stream. Enter a title that will help you identify the event in your account.
- Choose a processing region. Select a region close to the broadcast source. Wowza recommends proximity to reduce network distance and latency; confirm that the options you need are available in that region.
- Select the input type. Choose the protocol or supported device that matches your source. For protocol inputs such as RTMP, SRT, RTSP, or WebRTC, retrieve the generated connection details from the stream details page. Some named encoders and cameras use a specialized connection method.
- Decide how viewers will watch. Choose a Wowza-hosted page, JavaScript embed, or iFrame embed. The setup guide says a hosted page cannot be added after the live stream has been created, so select it during setup if you want that option.
Wowza’s quick-start instructions are in Quick live stream with Wowza Video (updated February 24, 2025). The configurable setup guide is Live Stream Setup page in Wowza Video (updated February 8, 2024).
Connect a camera or encoder
Use the input instructions and connection details shown for the stream in your Wowza account. Wowza’s setup guide lists RTMP, RTSP, SRT, browser WebRTC, stream from file, UDP, IP camera, and Wowza Streaming Engine inputs. The source must use a compatible protocol and configuration; do not assume that every camera or encoder can connect without checking its documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For an IP camera
The documented IP camera setup calls for RTSP and H.264 support, plus the camera’s source URL. Check the camera manual for the exact URL syntax, including any authentication details and non-default port. The setup guide lists TCP 1935 as the default RTMP port and TCP 554 as the default RTSP port; include a non-default port in the source URL. These are details from Wowza’s February 8, 2024 guide, so recheck the current interface and service instructions if they have changed.
For SRT or another protocol input
Choose the matching input type in Wowza and use the connection information provided for that stream. Wowza describes SRT as designed for secure, high-quality, low-latency delivery over unpredictable network conditions; that is the protocol’s intended use, not a guarantee of performance on a particular network. Verify the source’s protocol, codec, URL or connection syntax, and any required authentication before going live.

Choose adaptive bitrate or passthrough
The output mode affects what Wowza processes and what rendition options viewers receive. The right choice depends on the subscription, region, and source requirements available to your account.
| Mode | What it does | Limits and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Adaptive bitrate | Transcodes the source into multiple renditions at different sizes and bitrates, allowing playback to adapt to a viewer’s device and bandwidth. | Rendition counts in Wowza’s February 8, 2024 setup guide are configuration examples, not performance guarantees: a 1920 × 1080, 16:9 source generates 6 bitrate renditions; a source up to 3840 × 2160 generates 7. |
| Passthrough | Sends one source rendition without transcoding, retaining the source characteristics. | Wowza’s passthrough guide says it requires a 24×7 subscription, is unavailable in all regions, and does not support 4K. Confirm eligibility in the account and region you intend to use. |
See Wowza’s passthrough stream guide for the mode’s eligibility details. Do not treat the rendition examples as a promise that a given source, account, or network will deliver a particular viewer experience.

Share the live stream
- Wowza-hosted page: copy its page URL and share it with viewers. Select this option during setup if you need it; the setup guide says it cannot be added after stream creation.
- JavaScript embed: use the embed code Wowza provides to place playback on a publisher-controlled site.
- iFrame embed: use the supplied iFrame code when that format fits your site.
Test the selected destination before the event begins, including access from the devices and networks your audience is likely to use.
Stop the stream when the event ends
Wowza’s getting-started guide warns that transcoding charges can accrue for a started stream even when it is not actively receiving content. It says idle streams stop automatically after 20 minutes and recommends stopping promptly when the event ends. Stop the stream from the account workflow rather than relying on the idle timeout. Check your current account terms for applicable charges; the guide does not establish a current price.

Use the API for a code-driven workflow
If you need to automate stream operations, Wowza’s developer quick start demonstrates creating a WebRTC live stream with the Wowza Video 2.0 REST API, connecting the source, delivering to a Wowza-hosted player page, and starting and stopping the stream programmatically. This is an alternative to the basic UI workflow, not a prerequisite for it: Wowza Video 2.0 REST API WebRTC quick start.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel built around uploaded recordings rather than a live camera event, StreamNeo takes a different route: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
