You install Wowza Streaming Engine from AWS Marketplace by launching its Amazon Machine Image (AMI) as an Amazon EC2 instance, then configuring access and the streaming protocols you need. There is an important version distinction: Wowza’s current Linux EC2 guide describes a preconfigured virtual machine running Engine 4.12.0, not 4.2. The current Marketplace listing reviewed is a Linux bring-your-own-license (BYOL) offer; it does not establish that a new customer can still subscribe to an Engine 4.2 image. Use the current instructions for a current deployment, and verify the exact version and terms in the Marketplace offer before launching. Wowza’s Linux EC2 deployment guide and its archived Engine 4 EC2 guide provide current and historical context, respectively.
What “installing from AWS Marketplace” means
AWS Marketplace deployment is an EC2 launch, not a conventional installation on your own computer. An AMI is a preconfigured virtual machine image; AWS runs it as an EC2 instance. Your total cost can include AWS infrastructure, such as instance time, storage, and bandwidth, as well as Wowza software licensing, depending on the offer.
Wowza’s current deployment overview says its Marketplace subscriptions replace legacy AWS Marketplace BYOL and Standard software subscriptions. Customers who already bought a legacy subscription may continue using it until they cancel, but the old “Wowza Streaming Engine 4: Standard” option is unavailable to new subscribers. Those present-day notes do not confirm that Engine 4.2 is available to a new customer. Check the live Marketplace listing for its version, region availability, price, and terms before committing. Choose a license and launch method
BYOL or a Marketplace software subscription
With BYOL, you provide an eligible Wowza license. The AWS Marketplace Linux BYOL listing reviewed says activation uses a license purchased outside AWS. A paid Marketplace option is described by Wowza as an AMI with an embedded software license, with AWS combining instance, storage, bandwidth, and software usage on its invoice. Exact offers and terms can change, so verify them on the listing you select. AWS Marketplace Linux BYOL listing · Wowza deployment overview

EC2 console or Marketplace 1-Click
Wowza’s current guide says Marketplace 1-Click uses a default startup package and does not allow you to provide a custom Wowza startup package. If your deployment requires a custom startup package, use the EC2 console flow instead. Confirm that this applies to the particular offer you are using; it is current documentation, not verified Engine 4.2 behavior. Wowza Linux EC2 guide
Launch the current documented Linux AMI
-
Open the offer. Sign in to AWS, find the current Wowza Streaming Engine Linux Marketplace offer, and decide whether BYOL or an embedded software license fits your situation. Check the offer’s version, licensing, price, and availability in your intended AWS Region before purchase.
-
Start the launch flow. Launch from the Marketplace offer or follow Wowza’s documented EC2 console path. The current guide describes selecting an AMI version, Region, and EC2 instance type; labels and available choices may vary as AWS and the listing change.

Configure the instance. Choose the instance family and size for your expected workload, configure storage and tags, and select a key pair. The reviewed sources do not support one universally correct instance size: requirements depend on stream count, codecs, and whether transcoding is involved.

Set the security group deliberately. Allow inbound traffic only for the streaming protocols and administration access you need. The guide’s example uses TCP 1935 for RTMP and TCP 8086–8088 for Engine Manager. Do not expose management ports broadly to “Anywhere” in a production setup; limit them to trusted IP addresses or a suitable private network.
-
Launch and open Engine Manager. After the instance starts, use the address pattern supplied by the listing or guide. For the Marketplace listing reviewed, Engine Manager follows this pattern:
http://[public-domain-name]:8088/enginemanager. Replace the bracketed value with the instance’s public domain name. The exact endpoint can differ by offer and configuration.Rank #3

Complete setup and configure an application. Follow the first-run instructions shown by the image, then configure the application and stream for your use case. The current sources do not establish the exact first-run screens for Engine 4.2, so do not assume current screens match that legacy version.
Open only the ports your streaming design needs
Wowza’s current port reference lists the following defaults. These are options, not a requirement to expose every port: enable only what your protocols and administration design need. The EC2 security group and any firewall on the host can both block traffic.
| Port | Default use listed by Wowza |
|---|---|
| TCP 1935 | RTMP/RTMPE/RTMPT, RTSP-interleaved, and WOWZ streaming |
| TCP 8086–8088 | Administration |
| TCP 8089 | REST API documentation |
| TCP 8090 | SSL access to the Engine Manager page |
| UDP 6970–9999 | RTP/UDP streaming |
| TCP 80 | HLS, MPEG-DASH, RTMPT streaming, and license-server validation |
| TCP 443 | TLS streaming, including RTMPS, HTTPS, and WebRTC |
| TCP 554 | RTSP streaming |
For example, a basic RTMP setup may need TCP 1935 for stream traffic and restricted access to the administration ports. A deployment using HLS, WebRTC, or RTP/UDP has different network needs. Consult Wowza’s default-port reference and permit only the applicable traffic.

Check that the server responds, then test the actual stream
Wowza’s general installation guide gives http://[wowza-ip-address]:1935/ServerVersion as a way to check whether the server responds and reports a version. This is a general verification method, not a version-specific guarantee for a 4.2 Marketplace image. For the Marketplace listing reviewed, Engine Manager uses the address pattern given above. Once basic access works, test the configured application and streaming protocol: a reachable instance alone does not prove that application-level streaming is working. Wowza installation and configuration guide
Troubleshoot access and launch problems
-
Engine Manager does not load: Check that the instance is running, that you are using the correct public or private address and Manager path, and that TCP 8086–8088 is allowed from your trusted address in the EC2 security group and host firewall. The listing reviewed uses port 8088 for its Manager URL.
-
The version endpoint is unreachable: Confirm the instance’s address, service status, and whether TCP 1935 is permitted by both the security group and host firewall. The
/ServerVersioncheck is a general guide, not proof of a particular Marketplace image’s behavior.Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

-
The server responds but the stream does not: Check that the selected port matches the application’s configured protocol and that the required inbound rule is open. Test the actual application and protocol rather than treating a successful instance launch as a completed streaming setup.
-
You cannot use a custom startup package with 1-Click: The current Wowza guide documents a default package for Marketplace 1-Click. Try the EC2 console launch path if a custom package is required, and verify the behavior for the specific offer.
-
You cannot find Engine 4.2: The current Linux guide documents a preconfigured VM running Engine 4.12.0, and the reviewed listing does not prove that a new 4.2 subscription is available. Check the current Marketplace offer and Wowza’s documentation rather than assuming the current AMI is 4.2.
Or let it run in the cloud
