You can configure Wirecast on a VPS to send a continuous prerecorded or live production to YouTube, but the setup is conditional: Wirecast’s cited requirements cover desktop computers, not VPS deployments. Before relying on it, verify the virtual machine’s operating system, available CPU/GPU encoding, sustained upload capacity, and provider rules, then test your exact stream profile. A VPS can keep the encoder running independently of your home computer; it does not, by itself, guarantee recovery from a Wirecast, host, or network failure.
How do I run Wirecast on a VPS?
Use the VPS as the computer running Wirecast: provision a compatible environment, install and configure Wirecast, send its output to YouTube, and monitor the stream during a realistic burn-in test. Treat this as a technically plausible deployment, not a vendor-certified one. Wirecast’s published hardware and operating-system guidance does not establish that Wirecast is supported on a VPS.
1. Confirm YouTube live streaming is available for the channel
- Sign in to the YouTube channel that will host the broadcast and confirm that live streaming is enabled and that the channel has no restriction preventing it.
- If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable the feature in advance. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours.
- Decide whether the broadcast should be public, unlisted, or private, and whether you will create a scheduled event or send output to an existing live setup. Check the current YouTube controls before configuring Wirecast because labels and workflows can change.
2. Verify the VPS before installing
Check the actual virtual machine and its provider, not just the plan name or advertised vCPU count. Wirecast’s requirements page lists Windows 10 version 1809 or later and Windows 11 compatibility, along with computer resource guidance. Its published minimum is 8 GB RAM; its recommended/optimal target is 16+ GB RAM. Wirecast warns that the minimum may not be enough for higher resolutions or 60 fps. These are desktop requirements, not proof that a VPS with those numbers will perform reliably.
Wirecast lists hardware encoding options such as Intel Quick Sync, NVIDIA NVENC, and Apple H.264. A virtual machine may not expose a suitable graphics device or hardware acceleration. Ask the provider what CPU/GPU resources are actually available to the guest, whether they are shared or restricted, and whether sustained real-time encoding is allowed. A vCPU count alone cannot establish encoding performance; benchmark the exact stream profile on the selected host before committing to unattended use.

Wirecast’s network planning baseline is total stream bitrate multiplied by two for required upload bandwidth. For example, a 6 Mbps video stream plus audio requires planning for roughly twice the total outgoing bitrate—not merely the video figure—and then testing sustained throughput from the VPS itself. Leave headroom for network variation. Confirm the provider permits continuous outbound streaming and check any firewall rules that affect the chosen YouTube workflow. Do not open Wirecast ports for NDI, Rendezvous, remote presenters, or capture devices unless your particular production needs those features.
Consult Wirecast Hardware & Tech Specs for the current listed operating systems, resource guidance, encoding options, and network notes. Availability can differ by VPS provider and Wirecast release.

3. Install Wirecast and prepare a test production
- Install a Wirecast release compatible with the VPS operating system, following the installer and licensing instructions for that release. The cited Wirecast material does not specify a VPS licensing procedure.
- Open a production with the actual sources you intend to use. For a prerecorded loop, make sure the media is available to the VPS and can play continuously; for a live production, verify each input and audio source.
- Use a short test first, but include representative motion and audio. A static desktop or brief connection check is not a useful substitute for testing the real workload over time.
4. Connect Wirecast to YouTube
Wirecast documents a native YouTube output workflow: open Output Settings, choose YouTube, authenticate the Google account, and configure the stream. In that native integration, Wirecast’s guide says the service handles stream-key and server routing. Exact labels and available controls can vary by installed release, so follow the controls displayed in your version.
You can also use YouTube’s generic encoder workflow: in YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in the encoder’s output settings. Use the server and key shown for the specific stream rather than assuming an old key or event configuration is still correct. Keep the key private: YouTube treats it like a stream address and password. If it is exposed, the channel owner or manager can reset it in YouTube’s live settings, then update the encoder.

5. Choose a conservative encoding profile
Start with a resolution and frame rate your tested VPS can encode continuously, and whose total bitrate the VPS can sustain with network headroom. YouTube’s general encoder guidance calls for RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Its published H.264 bitrate recommendations include:
| Output profile | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or upload at those settings. Wirecast’s bandwidth planning rule applies to total bitrate, including audio. If the host struggles, reduce the frame rate, resolution, or bitrate and repeat the test. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into viewer formats, so a higher encoder setting is not automatically better for viewers.

6. Run a realistic test and inspect stream health
- Start the output and confirm that YouTube receives the signal in Live Control Room.
- Let the production run with representative audio and motion. During the burn-in, observe CPU/GPU use on the VPS and watch Wirecast and YouTube for dropped-frame, connection, or health indications.
- Check YouTube’s stream status, health messages, and real-time metrics, including duration and concurrent viewers. Resolve warnings before treating the configuration as operational.
- Repeat the test after changing encoding settings, host resources, media, or network configuration. A successful short test does not prove the VPS can sustain the same output indefinitely.
YouTube Live Control Room is a monitoring facility, not evidence that a failed encoder or VPS will restart itself. Establish who receives alerts and who can intervene before describing the setup as unattended.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can I stream to YouTube 24/7 with Wirecast?
A VPS can keep Wirecast running without keeping a home computer powered on, but “24/7” also depends on the provider, operating system, encoder, network, and a workable response to failures. The cited official material does not establish a universal Wirecast auto-restart configuration for VPS failures, nor does it promise automatic recovery after a host or network interruption.

Write an operating and recovery plan
- Choose an operator or alert path for YouTube health warnings and VPS outages.
- Document how to check whether Wirecast is still running, whether the VPS has network access, and whether YouTube is receiving the signal.
- Define who will reconnect or restart the output, and how they will confirm that the stream is live again.
- Decide how to handle a provider reboot, maintenance window, software update, expired authentication, or lost stream key.
- Keep a copy of media and any production configuration somewhere accessible if the VPS must be rebuilt.
Do not assume that monitoring, reconnect behavior, or a running VPS is equivalent to an end-to-end recovery guarantee. Test recovery steps deliberately before depending on them.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 live stream?
Not reliably as one complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. This affects the archive, not whether a VPS can continue sending the live signal.
If preserving each broadcast as a YouTube VOD matters, schedule breaks comfortably below 12 hours and start a new event rather than relying on one uninterrupted multi-day stream. YouTube recommends making a local recording as a backup. On a VPS, confirm there is enough storage for the recording and account for the provider’s storage limits, costs, and retention policy. See YouTube’s Archive live streams guidance.
Common Wirecast-on-VPS problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Wirecast cannot install or run | The guest operating system or configuration does not meet the installed release’s requirements, or the provider restricts the needed software or resources. | Compare the VPS guest OS and resources with Wirecast’s current requirements; check provider rules and the release’s installer guidance. Do not assume that a Windows VPS is automatically compatible. |
| Encoding overload, stutters, or dropped frames | The VM lacks sustained CPU/GPU capacity for the chosen profile, or the expected hardware acceleration is not exposed. | Inspect host CPU/GPU use and Wirecast’s status. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, then repeat a representative sustained test. |
| YouTube reports unstable health or connection issues | Insufficient sustained egress, network variation, firewall/provider restrictions, or an output configuration problem. | Check total bitrate, apply Wirecast’s two-times upload planning baseline with additional headroom, verify provider/firewall allowances, and test throughput from the VPS. |
| YouTube does not receive the output | The wrong destination, event, stream URL/key, authentication, or current Wirecast control was selected. | Confirm the active YouTube event and credentials, then re-check the output path shown in the installed Wirecast release. Reset an exposed key and update Wirecast if needed. |
| The stream disappears after a VPS or encoder failure | The process, host, or network stopped; monitoring alone does not restart it. | Use the operator alert and recovery procedure you established, verify YouTube receives the signal again, and investigate the host or network cause before resuming unattended operation. |
| A long broadcast has no complete YouTube archive | The stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. | For future VODs, split the schedule into shorter events below that threshold and use a separate recording where appropriate. |
