Windows Task Scheduler can launch your encoder on a Windows VPS at a set time or when the VPS starts. It does not, by itself, guarantee that a scheduled YouTube event becomes publicly live: YouTube may still require you to click Go live. To automate that step, check the stream’s auto-start settings and test the complete workflow on your channel before relying on it.
What Task Scheduler does—and what YouTube still controls
Task Scheduler starts a program or script on the VPS. The encoder then sends video to YouTube Live using the stream’s server URL and stream key. The scheduled task’s success only confirms that Windows ran the action; check YouTube Live Control Room to confirm the feed arrived and the event is live.
YouTube’s scheduled-stream instructions include waiting for the encoder preview and clicking Go live. YouTube also provides auto-start and auto-stop settings that can let the encoder start or stop the stream. The exact behavior depends on the stream configuration, so verify the settings and test your account rather than assuming every scheduled event will start unattended. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and live stream settings.
Prepare the YouTube stream and encoder
- Enable live streaming in advance. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one from Manage. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Set up the event. Enter the title, privacy and any other event details you need. Choose whether the event should be public, unlisted or private based on the audience you intend to reach.
- Configure the encoder on the VPS. Install the encoder there, choose the intended video and audio source, and enter the server URL and stream key shown by YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS where the encoder supports it. Select a quality that the VPS connection can sustain, and test with representative motion and audio; monitor stream health in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s bitrate and encoder guidance.
- Check the source and paths. Confirm that any file, playlist or script the encoder needs exists on the VPS and will be accessible under the task’s run-as account. A path on your own computer is not a path on the remote VPS.
- Protect the stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as the stream’s “password and address.” Do not put the key in a public script, screenshot or log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Create a task for the broadcast
Use Task Scheduler on the Windows VPS itself. The interface labels may vary slightly by Windows edition, but the key choice is whether the task should run at a fixed clock time, at startup, or when a user logs on.

- Open Task Scheduler from the VPS’s Start menu. Choose Create Task if you need to configure the run-as identity and conditions explicitly.
- Name the task, for example, “YouTube livestream encoder.” Add a description noting the intended event or source, but do not include the stream key.
- Choose a trigger. Use a date/time trigger for a broadcast scheduled to begin at a particular time. Choose At startup when the encoder should launch after each VPS reboot, or At log on when it should start only after a particular user signs in. Startup and logon triggers are not substitutes for a clock-time event. Microsoft documents the corresponding `ONSTART` and `ONLOGON` trigger types in its schtasks create reference.
- Add the action. Select Start a program and enter the encoder’s full executable path on the VPS. If startup requires several commands, use a batch file or script as the action and have it start the encoder. Confirm that the executable and script paths are valid on the VPS.
- Select the run-as account deliberately. A task running as SYSTEM runs in the background without an interactive desktop; users cannot see or interact with programs it launches. If your encoder needs a logged-in desktop or user-specific files, configure it to run in the appropriate user context and test the saved credentials and behavior after logoff and reboot. Use no more privileges than the encoder requires. Microsoft documents task identity and run-level options in the task creation reference.
- Review conditions and save. Make sure conditions such as power or idle requirements will not prevent the VPS task from running. Save the task and confirm it appears enabled in Task Scheduler.
For command-line administration, Microsoft documents `schtasks /create` and the `/sc onstart` schedule type; use the time-based trigger in Task Scheduler for a particular broadcast date and time. The command-line option does not remove the need to configure a valid executable, account and YouTube encoder settings.
Test the task and confirm the event is live
- Run the task on demand. In Task Scheduler, select the task and choose Run. Microsoft also documents `schtasks /run` for launching a saved task immediately. Check the task’s last run result or history and confirm the encoder process actually started.
- Check YouTube, not just Windows. Open the event in Live Control Room. Wait for the preview and inspect the video, audio and stream-health indicators.
- Follow the configured start behavior. If the event requires a manual start, click Go live in Live Control Room. If you expect encoder auto-start, confirm that the setting is enabled for this stream and that the event becomes live without that manual action.
- Rehearse the failure-sensitive cases. Test the actual task account after signing out and rebooting the VPS if those conditions matter to your schedule. Verify that the source is available, the encoder reconnects as intended, and the YouTube event behaves as expected.
YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before a livestream and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. Use that lead time to catch missing sources, connection problems or a preview that does not arrive. See YouTube’s encoder preparation tips.

Plan how the stream ends
Decide whether an operator, the encoder or a separate scheduled action will stop the feed. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s guide says to stop sending content and click End Stream. YouTube automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours after the encoder stops sending content; do not assume that archive behavior covers longer streams. Details are in the encoder setup guide.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The task reports success, but no encoder is running: Check the action’s executable path, arguments, working directory and run-as account. Try running the same action manually on the VPS under that account.
- The encoder runs only when you are signed in: It may depend on your interactive desktop, user profile or files. Test the chosen account after logoff; use a suitable user context if the program needs desktop access. A SYSTEM task is not interactive.
- The encoder starts, but YouTube shows no preview: Check the server URL and stream key in the encoder, the selected source, and the VPS’s network connection. Inspect YouTube’s stream-health information and the encoder’s own status.
- The preview appears, but viewers cannot watch: Check whether the event still needs a manual Go live click. Confirm auto-start settings on the specific stream instead of assuming the preview alone publishes it.
- The stream stops after a reboot or sign-out: Confirm that the trigger matches the intended behavior—startup, logon or clock time—and that the account can access all needed files. Test the complete path under the conditions the VPS will encounter.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder configuration. Review scripts and logs so the replacement is not exposed there.
- The video is unstable or stream health is poor: Test a lower or otherwise more reliable encoder quality for the VPS connection, check audio and representative motion, and monitor the event before the scheduled start. YouTube’s quality guidance recommends testing rather than choosing a setting the connection cannot reliably sustain.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping prerecorded YouTube stream rather than learning Windows automation, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
