Watch Later is YouTube’s account-based playlist for videos and Shorts you want to find again. While signed in, choose More → Save → Watch later (or the equivalent mobile option), then open You → Playlists → Watch later on the app or the Guide/You area on desktop. It saves a playlist entry, not an offline copy, and minor labels or locations can differ by device, app version, account, or YouTube experiment.
What Watch Later does—and does not do
YouTube defines Watch Later as a playlist of videos you have saved (YouTube Help). The entry is associated with your signed-in account so you can return to it in another signed-in YouTube session.

- It is not a browser bookmark, watch-history list, or download.
- It does not preserve a copy of the video. If the uploader deletes it, makes it private, or YouTube otherwise removes access, the saved entry may no longer play.
- It is intended as a personal “save this for later” list. Use a regular playlist when you need categories, a deliberate order, sharing, or documented visibility controls.
You generally need to be signed in to save to your account. If YouTube asks you to sign in, use the Google account whose Watch Later list you want to manage.
How to add a video to Watch Later
On a computer
- Open the video on YouTube.
- Click More beneath or beside the player.
- Choose Save, then select Watch later.
From search results, Home, or another listing, you can often hover over the thumbnail and click the Watch later clock icon instead. The icon may be placed differently in some desktop layouts. The official desktop steps are in YouTube’s Watch Later help.

On Android
- Open the video in the YouTube app.
- Tap Save.
- If it is sent to another playlist, tap Change.
- Select Watch later.
From a feed or search result, tap More next to the video and choose Save to Watch later. See the Android instructions.
On iPhone or iPad
- Open the video in the YouTube app.
- Tap Save.
- Tap Change if YouTube selected a different playlist.
- Choose Watch later.
For a video you have not opened, tap its More menu and select Save to Watch later. The platform-specific help is at YouTube’s iPhone and iPad page.

- Open the Short, or open its More menu from a listing.
- Choose Save to playlist.
- Select Watch later.
This path is documented for desktop and mobile in YouTube’s Watch Later help. If you do not see the exact wording, look for the function “save this Short to a playlist.”
Where to find and watch Watch Later
Computer
Open the left-side Guide and select Watch later. In layouts that emphasize the You section, open You and choose Watch later in the playlist area. YouTube lists both navigation concepts in its current guidance (desktop navigation help).
Android, iPhone, or iPad
- Tap your profile picture or open the You tab.
- Under Playlists, tap Watch later.
- Tap a video to start watching.
Current mobile instructions use the You tab rather than older “Library” directions. If your app uses a slightly different label, open your account area and look for Playlists.

How to remove a video
Computer
- Open You → Watch later.
- Click More beside the video.
- Choose Remove from Watch later.
Android, iPhone, or iPad
- Open You → Playlists → Watch later.
- Tap More beside the video.
- Tap Remove from Watch later.
Removal only takes the entry out of your playlist; it does not delete the uploader’s video. If you want to clear watched items, remove them individually unless your current playlist controls show a verified bulk option—YouTube’s available controls can vary.

See YouTube’s queue guidance for persistence and queue-saving behavior. Queueing on mobile or tablet may require YouTube Premium; that requirement does not apply to the basic Watch Later workflow. For topic-based lists, reordering, or privacy settings, use YouTube’s regular playlist tools (playlist management help).
Why can’t a video be saved?
It is marked Made for Kids
YouTube documents a specific restriction: a video set as Made for Kids cannot be added to a playlist or saved to Watch Later. There is no Watch Later workaround for that video.

The save control is missing or behaves differently
- Confirm that you are signed in and using the intended Google/YouTube account.
- Open More and look for Save, Save to playlist, or Save to Watch later.
- If tapping Save sends the video to the last-used playlist, tap Change and select Watch later.
- On mobile, try the You tab instead of an older Library path.
- Reload YouTube in a browser, restart or update the app, and temporarily disable an extension that could alter page controls.
The video later disappears
Search for the title or channel again. The upload may have been deleted, made private, restricted in your region, or replaced. Watch Later records the video entry; it does not guarantee continued access.

- Remove videos after you finish them so the list remains actionable.
- Move recurring subjects—such as documentary recommendations, recipes, or tutorials—into custom playlists.
- Use Queue only when the order matters for the current viewing session.
- If an item appears unavailable, search for the title or channel before assuming your account lost it.

Is Watch Later private?
It is presented as your personal Watch Later list. Do not treat it like a shareable public playlist; use a custom playlist when you need explicit sharing or visibility controls.

Can I use Watch Later without YouTube Premium?
Yes, the standard save-and-watch workflow is not documented as Premium-only. YouTube’s Premium note concerns certain mobile or tablet queue features.
Where is Watch Later in the YouTube app?
Open your profile picture or the You tab, then choose Playlists → Watch later. If it is absent, check that you are in the account that saved the videos.

Can I save a video while browsing without opening it?
