That makes systemd relaunch FFmpeg after many abnormal exits and timeouts. It does not prove that YouTube has resumed the public broadcast: after a restart, check the encoder connection and the stream in YouTube Studio or at the viewer endpoint.
What systemd will—and will not—restart
systemd supervises the service process. With Restart=on-failure, it retries after a non-zero exit, qualifying abnormal signal, operation timeout, or watchdog timeout. A clean exit is not considered a failure under this policy. A deliberate systemctl stop also remains stopped; a restart policy does not override an administrator’s request to stop the service.
Use Restart=always only if FFmpeg should be relaunched after clean exits as well as failures. It still will not restart the service after a deliberate systemd stop. Neither policy independently confirms that YouTube is publishing the broadcast when FFmpeg reconnects. systemd.service documents the restart behavior; check the manual installed on your host because available options and details can vary by systemd release.
Create a systemd unit for FFmpeg
Save a unit such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service. The command below is a template, not a universal or tested FFmpeg invocation: replace the bracketed options with the input and encoding settings for your actual source, verify the executable path, and protect the stream key.

WantedBy=multi-user.targetThe example’s 5s delay is a starting illustration, not a universally correct interval. Choose a pause that avoids rapid retries and gives a transient network or ingest problem time to clear. Do not put a real stream key in a public script, article, or shared log. Use a protected configuration mechanism appropriate to your host.
Keep FFmpeg as the service’s main process: avoid adding a shell or backgrounding command that makes it unclear which process systemd should supervise. For FFmpeg options, consult the documentation for your installed build. The official FFmpeg documentation tracks the newest revision, is regenerated nightly, and advises users of older installations to consult their local documentation.

Load, start, and monitor the service
- Load the unit: run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadafter creating or editing the file. - Enable it and start now: run
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-ffmpeg.service. Enabling configures it to start at boot;--nowalso starts it immediately. - Check systemd’s view: run
systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service. This shows whether systemd considers the service active, but is not proof that viewers can see the intended YouTube broadcast. - Follow the service log: run
journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -fto watch FFmpeg output and restart attempts as they occur. - Check the broadcast separately: confirm in YouTube Studio or through the actual viewer endpoint that the encoder is connected and the intended public stream is live. A running FFmpeg process and a live public broadcast are separate conditions.
Choose a restart policy and account for retry limits

For a long-running stream, on-failure is generally the clearer default: failures trigger recovery, while a clean exit remains visible instead of being silently relaunched. Choose always when any exit should lead to another attempt. A restart delay reduces rapid churn, but does not remove systemd’s start-rate limits.
If FFmpeg repeatedly exits, systemd can eventually refuse additional starts because the unit hit its configured rate limit. Check man systemd.unit on the target machine before setting StartLimitIntervalSec= or StartLimitBurst=; accepted settings and behavior depend on the installed release. Set values with the expected failure pattern in mind rather than copying version-specific settings blindly. See the systemd.unit manual.

Recover when systemd stops retrying
- Read the journal first: run
journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.serviceand identify the FFmpeg error or repeated exit. Check the input, network, credentials, and command rather than repeatedly clearing the failure state. - Clear the failed state if a fresh attempt is appropriate: run
sudo systemctl reset-failed youtube-ffmpeg.service. - Start the service again: run
sudo systemctl start youtube-ffmpeg.service, then inspect its status and logs.
systemctl reset-failed resets the unit’s failed state and start-rate counter; it does not fix the underlying network, stream-key, input, or encoding problem. The command’s behavior is described in the systemctl manual.
Know the limit of a process restart
systemd reacts to process exits and configured timeouts. If FFmpeg remains running but its output is stalled, Restart=on-failure alone may not detect the problem. Detecting stalled stream progress requires an additional health check or watchdog design, chosen and tested for the specific FFmpeg command.

A January 6, 2025 FFmpeg-user mailing-list post describes an RTSP recording setup using Restart=always and RestartSec=5; its author reported retries while a camera was unavailable and recording resuming when it returned, while noting uncertainty about whether FFmpeg could handle the task by itself. That is an anecdotal camera-recording example, not validation of YouTube livestream recovery. No reliability percentage or recovery time is established here. Read the mailing-list post.
