Run your already-working FFmpeg command as a foreground systemd service, then set a restart policy such as Restart=on-failure and a deliberate delay with RestartSec=. systemd can relaunch FFmpeg after the process exits; it cannot by itself detect every stalled output or guarantee that a streaming destination accepts the restarted connection.
What systemd can—and cannot—recover
systemd supervises the lifetime of the service’s main process. With Restart=on-failure, it makes another start attempt when the process exits in a failure condition covered by the installed systemd version and policy. RestartSec= sets the wait before that attempt. A clean, intentional exit need not trigger an endless loop under this policy.
FFmpeg’s own protocol recovery addresses a different case: FFmpeg may remain running and reconnect through a supported network interruption. A systemd restart addresses a process that has exited. Neither mechanism proves that the stream is reaching or playing at its destination, and restarting a process does not necessarily resume at the point where it stopped.
Check the VPS’s installed systemd and FFmpeg versions and their locally applicable limits. The systemd service reference describes restart behavior, but the linked main branch can change and may not match an older VPS installation.

Prepare and validate the FFmpeg command
Test the real command first
Build the FFmpeg command for the actual audio input, output destination, publishing protocol, codecs, and credentials. Run it successfully in the foreground before creating the service. The title alone does not establish whether the sounds come from a local file, an HTTP source, or another input, nor how the destination expects a stream.
For a local file intended to play continuously, choose and validate an input-looping strategy that suits the output timing. A finite input can reach EOF; systemd restarting FFmpeg after exit is not the same as making the media loop smoothly.

Use absolute paths and protect credentials
- Find the installed FFmpeg executable and use its absolute path, such as
/usr/bin/ffmpegonly if that is where it is installed. - Use absolute paths for media and set a working directory if the command relies on relative files.
- Make input files readable by the service account and any required state paths writable.
- Use a dedicated, minimally privileged account where practical. Protect stream credentials; do not publish a live key or place it in a world-readable unit file.
- Run the command with the same account, working directory, and environment the service will use, so permission or environment problems surface before deployment.
In a systemd unit, ExecStart= is not automatically interpreted by a shell. Do not assume pipes, redirection, or shell variable expansion will work there. If shell logic is genuinely needed, put it in a separately reviewed executable script and invoke that explicitly.
Create the systemd service
For a system-level unit, create /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service with an adapted version of this outline. It is a template, not a tested drop-in: replace the executable, account, directory, and arguments with the values you validated.

Choose restart behavior deliberately
Restart=on-failureis appropriate when failures should prompt recovery but a clean intentional stop should not necessarily restart the service.RestartSec=5sis an example delay, not a universal recommendation. Choose a delay appropriate to the endpoint and avoid rapid repeated attempts when a command or credential is invalid.- Check local start limits and restart policy behavior before relying on repeated retries. A failing unit can be rate-limited, and logs can grow without resolving the underlying fault.
Wants=network-online.targetandAfter=network-online.targetexpress startup ordering. Whether the VPS distribution has an enabled and meaningful network-online wait service is a local configuration question.
Reload, enable, start, and inspect the unit
-
After saving the unit, reload systemd’s manager configuration:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload -
Enable the service for boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service -
Check whether it is active and review its exit result and recent messages:

sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service -
Follow new journal entries while testing:
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service -f
journalctl displays entries stored by systemd’s journal services; see the journalctl manual for systemd 255. If no FFmpeg output appears, check the unit’s output settings, whether the process writes to standard output or error, and the VPS’s journal retention and configuration.
When FFmpeg reconnect options apply
Reconnect flags are protocol-specific. The FFmpeg Protocols Documentation describes options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_streamed, and retry limits for relevant protocol situations. It describes reconnect as: “Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF is hit.” That is a description of the option, not a guarantee for every input or output.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
For example, HTTP input reconnect options concern reading media over HTTP; they should not be copied blindly onto an RTMP output or assumed to handle every publishing-server disconnect. Verify the current options for the actual protocol and installed FFmpeg build. The FFmpeg command-line documentation is also useful when checking command syntax. Add reconnect behavior only when it matches the input protocol and failure you are trying to handle.
Troubleshoot failed or apparently live streams
The unit is failed or keeps restarting
- Inspect state, exit result, and recent messages with
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service. - Review this boot’s service logs with
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service -b; add-fto follow new entries. - Check the absolute FFmpeg path, argument boundaries, and any unit syntax. Run the validated command as the configured service user from the configured working directory.
- Check for missing or unreadable audio files, invalid arguments, unsupported codecs or protocols, invalid destination URLs, expired or incorrect credentials, and blocked network access.
- Resolve the underlying error before shortening the restart delay. Repeated attempts will not repair a bad command or rejected credentials.
The unit is active but the stream is not playing
An active service only establishes that systemd sees the process running. Check FFmpeg’s output and separately confirm that the destination recognizes and plays the stream. If FFmpeg stays alive while output has stalled, a process-exit restart policy may not detect that condition. Consider protocol-specific recovery or a deliberately designed health check only after defining what “healthy” means for this stream.
The stream returns, but from the beginning
A new FFmpeg process starts according to its command; it does not inherently continue the previous process’s position. Whether a restart begins at the start, reconnects meaningfully, or produces an interruption depends on the input, command, protocol, and endpoint behavior.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded sleep sounds rather than managing a VPS, StreamNeo runs the playback in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. The service is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not live camera feeds. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
