Use FFmpeg on an Ubuntu server to send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live repeatedly: prepare the file, copy the stream’s RTMPS URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, then run FFmpeg with a real-time input and loop enabled. The command below is a template, not a tested, one-size-fits-all command; adjust its settings to match your video, FFmpeg build, and YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
What you need
- An Ubuntu server that stays powered on and has enough outbound upload capacity for the selected stream bitrate.
- A video file the server can read, with audio if your broadcast needs it.
- An FFmpeg build that supports the chosen video and audio encoders and RTMPS output. Available packages and capabilities vary by Ubuntu release; confirm the build on your server.
- A YouTube live stream and its RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. Use the endpoint shown in the stream’s own settings rather than copying an endpoint from an unrelated example. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
Prepare the Ubuntu server and video
- Copy the video to the server and note its full path. Check that the file is readable by the account that will run FFmpeg.
- Confirm the file contains the video and audio tracks you expect, and select a resolution and frame rate the source can provide. Avoid configuring an output that implies detail or motion absent from the recording.
- Install FFmpeg using the method appropriate to your Ubuntu release, or use an existing build. Check that it includes the encoders you plan to use and RTMPS protocol support. Package commands and minimum versions are not specified here because they vary by release and were not verified.
Set up the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or open the stream you intend to use.
- Open the stream’s settings and copy its RTMPS URL and stream key. Use those exact values when you configure FFmpeg.
- Keep the stream key secret. Do not put it in screenshots, public repositories, shell history, or logs. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
Do not assume an example endpoint’s path applies to YouTube. In particular, AWS IVS examples use service-specific endpoint patterns and arguments; they are not YouTube configuration instructions.
Choose the video, bitrate, and audio settings
Choose codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), RTMPS, and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum recommended interval of four seconds. It supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, at frame rates up to 60 fps. Check the current table before choosing settings: YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

| H.264 example | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 14 Mbps |
These are H.264 examples, not universal targets for every codec or frame rate. Use YouTube’s full current table for the actual combination you select. Check that the server’s sustained outbound upload can carry the chosen bitrate, with practical headroom for variation rather than an internet connection sized exactly to the video rate.
For stereo audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. Match the audio configuration to the input and to what your FFmpeg build can encode.

Run FFmpeg in a loop
Replace the input path and endpoint/key placeholders, then adapt the bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio settings. This illustrative template has not been tested and is not guaranteed to work with every input or Ubuntu FFmpeg build.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/video.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"
-rereads the file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible;-stream_loop -1requests repeated playback.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacselect video and audio encoders. They require a build with those encoders available.-b:vand-maxrateset the video rate in this example;-bufsizeis part of rate control. Change these values to suit YouTube’s guidance for your chosen output.-g 60means a 60-frame GOP. It represents a two-second interval only at 30 fps. Set the GOP to match your selected frame rate and YouTube’s keyframe guidance.-f flvselects the FLV muxer used by FFmpeg’s RTMP output workflow. The endpoint must be the RTMPS URL copied from your YouTube stream settings, with the correct key format for that endpoint.
FFmpeg documents real-time file input and RTMP output through the FLV muxer in its protocol documentation. The negative stream-loop pattern also appears in an AWS IVS streaming-software example, but its service-specific URL and arguments must not be carried over to YouTube.

Verify the broadcast before relying on it
- Start FFmpeg and open the stream preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check that the preview shows the expected picture and that audio is present and audible.
- Test representative motion and audio, not just a still or silent portion of the file. Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages while the test runs.
- If the stream is unstable, compare the actual output settings with YouTube’s current encoder table and test the server’s upload path before depending on the broadcast.
Troubleshooting
- FFmpeg cannot connect: Check that you copied the current stream’s RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room, and that the URL uses
rtmps, notrtmp. Do not substitute an AWS IVS endpoint. - YouTube reports poor stream health: Compare codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendations. Check sustained outbound capacity and leave headroom.
- There is no sound: Confirm the source file has an audio track and that the selected FFmpeg build can encode it. Check the YouTube preview and test a representative section with audio.
- The keyframe interval does not match the intended interval: Calculate the GOP in frames for the output frame rate. For example, a two-second GOP at 30 fps is 60 frames; a 60-frame GOP at another frame rate has a different duration.
- The key appears in command history or logs: Treat it as exposed, replace or rotate it through YouTube’s stream settings, and update the encoder with the new value. Avoid pasting secrets into public or shared records.
What an Ubuntu server does—and what it does not guarantee
The server must remain available, the file must stay accessible, and the connection must sustain the outgoing stream. The cited platform guidance does not establish a universal continuous-stream duration, automatic reconnect behavior for this command, required server size, Ubuntu package version, or hosting provider data-transfer charges. Do not treat a looping input as a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 delivery; test the actual server, file, and stream and monitor YouTube’s health messages.

If you would rather not keep an Ubuntu server configured and available, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera.
