Run FFmpeg as the foreground process of a systemd service, then enable that service at boot and set a deliberate restart policy. This keeps the job independent of your SSH session and can relaunch FFmpeg after qualifying failures—but it cannot guarantee that YouTube continues receiving a healthy stream, or that the music is cleared for livestreaming.
What systemd can—and cannot—keep running
systemd supervises a process on your Linux host. If you close SSH while FFmpeg is running as a system service, the process can continue. If FFmpeg exits under conditions covered by the unit’s restart policy, systemd can start it again. Enabling the unit also tells systemd to start it during boot.
That is process supervision, not end-to-end stream monitoring. A running FFmpeg process does not prove YouTube is receiving usable media. Restarting FFmpeg will not fix a missing input file, invalid stream key, unsupported media settings, blocked network route, or ended or invalid YouTube live event. A looped file may start again from the beginning after a restart.
Before you create the service
Prepare the host and input
- Use a Linux machine that can stay on and has reliable network connectivity and enough upload capacity for the stream you plan to send.
- Confirm FFmpeg is installed and that the service account you intend to use can read the input media and configuration.
- Decide whether restarting a looping file from its beginning is acceptable. A process restart may interrupt playback and create a content discontinuity.
- Choose an administration and recovery method for the host. A rented Linux VPS is one possible option if you do not have an always-on machine, but compare its cost, network reliability, upload capacity, and your ability to administer Linux and systemd. No particular VPS provider or hardware model is established here.
Get the current YouTube ingest details
In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the current stream URL and stream key for the live stream. Use YouTube’s current RTMPS ingest address, not a guessed or copied endpoint that may no longer apply. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifies RTMPS rather than plain RTMP and notes port 443 where needed; the Live Streams API documentation describes the primary RTMPS ingestion address fields. Encoder interfaces differ: some take the URL and stream name separately, while others expect them combined. Follow the format required by your FFmpeg workflow and the current YouTube details.

Keep the stream key private. Do not place the real key in a public unit file, logs, screenshots, or support requests. Store it in a configuration file with restrictive ownership and permissions.
Create a systemd unit for FFmpeg
The following unit is a template, not a tested drop-in recipe. Replace the account, paths, configuration filename, and FFmpeg command with values that fit your host, source media, codecs, and current YouTube ingest settings. Keep FFmpeg in the foreground so systemd can supervise its main process; do not daemonize it.
[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube live stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
Group=stream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/stream
EnvironmentFile=/etc/stream/stream.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/input.mp4 -c copy -f flv "${STREAM_URL}"
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Adapt the command rather than copying it blindly
The example’s -re -stream_loop -1 options illustrate reading a file at its native rate and looping it, and the output uses FLV. Your actual command must match the input and the codecs and ingest settings accepted for your YouTube stream. The example uses stream copy; it is only suitable when the source’s codecs and container path work for the intended output. If conversion is needed, configure the appropriate encoders and parameters for your setup. Do not treat any bitrate, resolution, codec, or keyframe interval as a universal recommendation.

Set the environment file path to a file that the service can read and that is not exposed to other users. For example, if it contains the stream URL and key, make the file owned by an administrator or the service account as appropriate, and restrict its permissions, such as with mode 600. Avoid embedding a literal key in a command that may be visible through process listings or copied into logs. Verify how your FFmpeg invocation receives credentials and how it handles errors before relying on it.

Install and enable the unit
- Save the unit as
/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service, adjusting the example’s paths and names for your host. - Tell systemd to load the unit and start it:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload, thensudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Check whether systemd considers the service active with
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Review recent service output with
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager. Confirm the input can be read and the process does not report an immediate connection or encoding error.
Wants=network-online.target and After=network-online.target express a startup ordering preference when network readiness matters. They do not repair a later network outage or guarantee YouTube connectivity.
Understand restart behavior and boot recovery
Restart=on-failure asks systemd to restart the service after documented failure conditions, including a non-zero exit, certain signals, qualifying operation timeouts, or watchdog timeouts. It does not restart a service that systemd itself intentionally stopped. RestartSec=10s in the template is an example delay, not a required value: choose a delay that avoids a tight retry loop and suits your host and network.

Systemd start-rate limits can stop repeated retries and leave a service in a failed state. If retries cease, inspect the journal and the unit’s restart and start-limit settings rather than assuming the process is still being supervised. Enabling the unit with systemctl enable arranges startup at boot; test the service after a planned reboot if boot recovery is important.
Verify the stream at both ends
- Check systemd and the journal. Use
systemctl statusandjournalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.serviceto determine whether FFmpeg launched, can read its input, and can connect. - Check YouTube Live Control Room. Review the stream preview and health information to verify that YouTube is receiving usable media. A locally active service is not proof of a healthy ingest.
- Check the ingest details if connection fails. Confirm the current RTMPS URL, the current key, the endpoint and path, and the port. Use the current YouTube-provided values and follow the required URL/key format for your encoder workflow.
- Identify which layer failed. A process restart can recover from some FFmpeg exits, but it cannot make an invalid key, absent file, incompatible media settings, blocked route, or ended live event valid. Fix the underlying cause, then restart or allow systemd to retry.
Clear music rights before going live
Using systemd and FFmpeg does not grant permission to stream a song. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”
YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may show a placeholder and warn the streamer; continued use can lead to temporary interruption or termination. Even a streamer who has licensed third-party music may be interrupted unless the rights owner adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Creator Music does not support licensing for live content.

A playlist, attribution, purchased recording, or “no copyright intended” notice does not establish the necessary livestream rights. Rights depend on the particular song, recording, composition, territories, and intended use. Confirm permissions with the relevant rights holders or a qualified rights adviser before streaming Indian music.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Stream stops when you close SSH | FFmpeg was started inside the SSH session rather than as the system service. | Start the enabled systemd unit and check its status. Keep FFmpeg as the foreground main process of the service. |
| Service fails immediately | Wrong executable or file path, unreadable input, invalid command, or configuration permissions. | Read the unit journal, confirm paths and FFmpeg options, and verify that the configured service account can read every required file. |
| FFmpeg runs but YouTube does not show a healthy stream | The ingest URL/key may be wrong or stale, the endpoint or port may be incorrect, or the media settings may not be usable. | Check the current RTMPS details in Live Control Room and its stream-health information. Confirm the URL/key formatting expected by the command. |
| Repeated retries stop | Start-rate limiting may have left the service failed, or the underlying error persists. | Inspect systemctl status and the journal, correct the underlying cause, and review restart and start-limit settings. |
| Stream restarts at the beginning of the file | FFmpeg relaunched the looping input after exiting. | Decide whether that interruption is acceptable for the program; systemd does not preserve the media position automatically. |
| Live stream is interrupted despite valid local process | YouTube event state, network path, ingest health, or third-party content enforcement can be the cause. | Check Live Control Room and the journal separately, and resolve any event, connectivity, or rights issue. A process restart alone may not help. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain a Linux host and systemd service, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded content in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream, though that does not establish music rights or guarantee uninterrupted playback. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
