Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Yes—you can use a spare PC running Streamlabs Desktop to send a continuous YouTube livestream, provided the computer, encoder settings, network, and power can sustain the actual scene you plan to broadcast. Set it up, test it under load, and arrange monitoring and recovery: the available Streamlabs documentation does not establish that Desktop automatically restarts after a crash or reconnects after every interruption.
What an “always-on” spare-PC stream requires
Streamlabs Desktop supplies the scenes, sources, audio, and encoding controls; YouTube receives the resulting encoder stream. The spare PC must remain powered on, connected to the internet, and running the software. A successful initial test does not guarantee uninterrupted operation: power, Windows or macOS, drivers, Streamlabs, the home network, and YouTube ingest can all interrupt a long session.
YouTube requires live streaming to be enabled on the channel. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance. Do this before the planned launch.
Check the PC and connection before configuring it
Compare the machine with Streamlabs’ current requirements
Streamlabs’ requirements page, last updated April 8, 2026, lists 8 GB RAM as a minimum. Its recommended guidance lists at least 16 GB RAM, a 512 GB SSD or larger, an 11th- or 12th-generation Intel Core i5 or higher or AMD Ryzen 5000-series or higher, and Nvidia RTX 20/30-series or AMD RX 5000/6000-series graphics. The page’s minimum OS line says Windows 11 or macOS 12 or higher, while its recommended line says Windows 10 or macOS 13 or higher; check the current requirements page before installing because these lines differ. These listed specifications are not an uptime certification for an older or used PC. See Streamlabs’ system requirements.

Use wired networking where possible
Streamlabs recommends Ethernet for streaming PCs. Its requirements article gives 3.6 Mbps or better for 720p at 30 fps for most platforms as a broad guideline—not a guarantee that a particular connection has enough stable headroom. Actual upload needs vary with settings and conditions. Test your connection at the intended output settings, preferably with the same sources and overlays you will leave active.
- Check that the PC’s fans and cooling work and that it does not overheat during an extended test.
- Check available RAM, disk condition, and whether the computer can sustain the chosen encoder without persistent lag.
- Prefer Ethernet over Wi-Fi when practical, and test for interruptions rather than relying on a single speed result.
Install Streamlabs Desktop and connect YouTube
- Enable YouTube live streaming. Complete YouTube’s live-stream activation in advance; first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Install and open Streamlabs Desktop. Use its onboarding flow to connect your YouTube account. You can also configure an encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key, as described in YouTube’s guide.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not show it in screenshots, browser captures, overlays, or a public scene. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live control room.
- Create a dedicated scene. Add only the material needed for the channel: for example, a media source, a static overlay, or suitable audio. Capture sources, a webcam, and widgets are optional, not requirements for a continuous feed.
- Verify source behavior in the current app. If the scene depends on a video or playlist, confirm that it loops and behaves as intended before leaving the PC. Do not assume every source universally loops or recovers after an error.
Streamlabs’ Quick Start Guide covers platform connection, scenes and sources, audio, output, and pre-stream checks.

Choose settings the spare PC can sustain
Set resolution and frame rate
In Settings > Video, set the base canvas to match the monitor or scene dimensions, then choose an output resolution equal to or smaller than the base. Streamlabs’ July 9, 2026 getting-started guide describes 1280×720 as a balance between performance and quality. Higher output resolution can increase processing demand; Streamlabs notes that 1080p can significantly affect CPU use. Its quick-start guidance suggests 30 FPS for slower content and 60 FPS for faster action, but the right choice depends on the footage, overlays, encoder, and machine.
For documentary footage or a mostly static continuous program, begin conservatively—often 720p at 30 FPS is a sensible test setting, not a universal requirement. Raise resolution or frame rate only after the complete scene remains stable and the resulting stream looks acceptable.

Choose an encoder based on available hardware
In Settings > Output, choose an encoder the spare PC can sustain. Streamlabs explains that x264 uses the CPU, while NVENC uses a dedicated Nvidia GPU encoder; it recommends NVENC New for Nvidia cards. An old PC may lack a suitable hardware encoder or may struggle with the scene even if it meets a listed minimum. Test the actual configuration rather than assuming a particular encoder will be best.
Set and validate bitrate
Bitrate demand rises with resolution and frame rate. Start with a restrained setting appropriate to your upload capacity, then check YouTube’s stream health and Streamlabs’ dropped-frame indicators while viewing the live output. Streamlabs’ optimization guidance describes Dynamic Bitrate as adjusting bitrate to network conditions to reduce dropped frames; it cannot prevent every interruption. See Streamlabs’ optimization guidance.

Run a full test before leaving the stream live
- Inspect the preview. Confirm framing, overlays, and any media sources display correctly. Streamlabs’ pre-stream checklist recommends checking preview placement, widgets or alerts, and audio.
- Check audio. Speak, play the intended program audio, or otherwise generate the expected sound and confirm the audio meter responds. Listen to the stream from another device to catch muted, distorted, or unexpectedly doubled audio.
- Run an unlisted or private test. View the YouTube watch page on a second device. Confirm that the correct audience can access it and that picture and sound remain usable.
- Watch the system under load. Leave the whole scene running long enough to reveal overheating, resource pressure, encoder warnings, or network instability. Check the stream health rather than judging only from the local preview.
- Check local recording if you need a backup. Confirm that the recording file exists and is growing. YouTube recommends verifying local archive files and monitoring audio and video quality; see YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Plan for long sessions, replays, and interruptions
Do not rely on a very long YouTube replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. Its separate DVR guidance also warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for very long streams, including those longer than 12 hours. A feed can remain live for viewers while its replay archive or rewind experience is incomplete. If preserving a complete YouTube replay matters, use shorter sessions and keep a verified local recording. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.
Monitor rather than assuming crash recovery
The official documentation reviewed does not establish that Streamlabs Desktop automatically starts after a computer restart, restarts after a crash, or recovers every dropped YouTube connection without operator action. Keep the PC and software maintained, minimize unnecessary animated or browser sources, and arrange a way to notice when the stream stops. Streamlabs’ public repository offers supplementary troubleshooting context: lagged frames can point to GPU or compositor load, skipped frames to encoder or CPU load, and dropped frames to network problems. That repository is mutable, so use current support documentation for interface directions: Streamlabs Desktop public repository.

Copyright and channel policy still apply
Using a spare PC or a cloud service does not grant rights to the material being streamed. Before leaving a documentary, soundtrack, or other footage live, make sure you have the rights or permission needed for YouTube distribution. Review YouTube’s current copyright rules and monetization policies for reused content; technical availability of a video does not establish that it is cleared for a livestream or eligible for monetization.
