OBS Replay Buffer and a prerecorded YouTube live stream do two different jobs. Replay Buffer holds a rolling window of recent OBS output so you can save a short clip after something happens. It does not play, schedule, or start a prerecorded service. To send a prerecorded service as a scheduled YouTube live event, prepare its playback in OBS, connect OBS to the event in YouTube Studio, check the preview, and start the event there.
What Replay Buffer does—and what it does not do
Replay Buffer continuously retains a recent portion of OBS output after you enable and start it. When you trigger Save Replay Buffer, OBS writes that recent segment as a clip. It cannot save footage from before the buffer was started.
That is different from both a continuous recording and a prerecorded program. Use Start Recording when you need a regular recording captured from the point you start it. Use an OBS media source or another playout setup to send a prerecorded service to YouTube. Replay Buffer is not a playback or scheduling feature.
| Need | OBS function | What it captures or sends |
|---|---|---|
| Save a short moment after it happens | Replay Buffer | A recent segment of OBS output, provided the buffer was already running |
| Capture a continuous local video | Start Recording | A recording from the time the operator starts it |
| Send a prerecorded service as a scheduled live event | Prepared playback source plus OBS streaming | The source’s output, sent to the selected YouTube event |
Set up and test OBS Replay Buffer
- Enable the buffer. In OBS, open Settings → Output and enable Replay Buffer. Choose a replay duration and a recording path you can locate after the service. A longer window retains more recent material and makes greater resource demands, so test the setting on the actual church computer rather than assuming one duration suits every system. OBS’s overview guide advises testing settings and ensuring system resources are sufficient.
- Assign a save hotkey. Open Settings → Hotkeys and set an easy-to-remember combination for Save Replay Buffer. Choose keys unlikely to be pressed accidentally during worship or media playback. OBS also provides hotkeys for starting and stopping the buffer. A physical controller is optional; keyboard hotkeys are sufficient.
- Start the buffer before the moment you may need. Use the Replay Buffer control in OBS before the relevant portion of the service. Saving later cannot recover material from before startup. OBS documents
--startreplaybufferas a launch parameter for starting the buffer automatically; test it with the church’s actual OBS launch method before relying on it (OBS launch parameters). - Make a test save. Trigger the hotkey, then check that a clip appears in the selected folder and has usable picture and audio. This verifies the hotkey and file path before a live service.
- Use recording separately if needed. If you need a complete local recording, use Start Recording rather than expecting a replay clip to contain the whole service. For ordinary recordings, OBS recommends MKV because an ungraceful stop will not corrupt the entire file, and documents a built-in remux process to MP4 (OBS Standard Recording Output Guide). This recording advice does not make a Replay Buffer clip a recovery copy of a failed live stream.
Send a prerecorded church service to a scheduled YouTube live event
The steps below describe an encoder-based scheduled live stream: OBS sends the program feed, and you start the event from YouTube’s Live Control Room. YouTube also has a separate Premiere workflow; use that if you want a prerecorded video to play as a premiere without operating an encoder feed.

- Confirm the channel can go live. YouTube requires a verified channel without a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility well ahead of the service (YouTube: Get started with live streaming).
- Schedule or select the event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and schedule an event or select the one already scheduled for the service. Scheduling lets you promote the event and allows viewers to receive reminders. Confirm you have selected the correct event before connecting OBS.
- Prepare the OBS playback scene. Add or select the scene and source that will play the prerecorded service. Confirm the source is visible and its audio reaches the OBS stream mix. Do a rehearsal using the same media and setup: playback behavior can vary with the source and OBS configuration, and YouTube’s encoder instructions do not establish a universal unattended playback or looping configuration. Check whether the program starts and ends as intended and whether it needs manual restarting or looping.
- Connect OBS to the scheduled event. In YouTube Studio, copy that event’s stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings, then start streaming from OBS. Follow YouTube’s encoder instructions for the scheduled event.
- Inspect the preview, then start the event. Wait for YouTube’s preview. Check picture and sound, the event title and date, stream privacy, and that the correct scheduled event is selected. When ready, click Go live in YouTube Studio. Sending the OBS feed and starting the YouTube event are separate actions.
- End the event deliberately. At the end of the service, end the event in the Live Control Room and stop OBS from sending the feed, following the sequence in YouTube’s encoder instructions. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat this as a substitute for checking the archive afterward.
Protect the service from music and copyright interruptions
YouTube states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If it identifies third-party content, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder. If the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Licensed content can still be interrupted unless the rights owner has added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. An archived stream may also receive a Content ID claim after it ends (YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams).
- Before the service, confirm the church has the rights needed for music, video, and other third-party material in the prerecorded program.
- If applicable, coordinate with the rights owner about adding the channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license by itself may not prevent a live interruption.
- After the event, check the archived video for any Content ID claim or other notice.
Keep service and rehearsal settings organized
OBS Profiles can store most output settings and can be switched between, but Profiles do not store Scenes. If rehearsal and service use different output settings or scenes, manage the relevant Scene Collection alongside the Profile. See the OBS Profiles guide.

A programmable hardware controller can map a button to an OBS hotkey, but it is an optional convenience, not a Replay Buffer requirement. Test any controller against the church’s actual OBS setup rather than assuming a particular device or software configuration will work.
Troubleshooting common problems
- Save Replay Buffer does nothing: Confirm Replay Buffer is enabled in Settings → Output and has been started. Then verify that the hotkey is assigned under Settings → Hotkeys.
- The clip is missing or hard to find: Check the recording path selected for the buffer. Make a test save and confirm the file is written where the operator expects.
- The saved clip omits the moment you wanted: The buffer was not running early enough, or its retained window did not reach back far enough. Start it before the relevant part and test a suitable duration on the service computer.
- The scheduled event has no preview: Check that OBS is streaming with the URL and key for the correct event, and confirm YouTube Studio has that event selected. Allow time for the encoder feed to appear before proceeding.
- The preview has no picture or sound: Check that the intended OBS scene is active, the media source is visible, and its audio reaches the stream mix. Rehearse the full path; do not assume a source will start or loop unattended as intended.
- The stream is interrupted: Check YouTube Studio for a copyright notice or other event alert. Review the prerecorded program’s third-party content and, where relevant, ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting.
- A computer restart should start Replay Buffer automatically: OBS documents
--startreplaybuffer, but its behavior depends on how OBS is launched. Test that exact launch method before the service.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without leaving the church computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the recording, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home or at the church. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
