YouTube’s official guidance does not specify a separate India-only OBS setup: use the ingest URL and key shown for your own event, and plan around the upload speed at your venue.
1. Check YouTube Live eligibility and prepare the event
Before configuring OBS, verify the YouTube channel and enable live streaming. YouTube says encoder streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room using the encoder workflow. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and its encoder setup guide.
- Check that the channel is eligible before the day of the podcast; a restriction can prevent the encoder from going live.
- Use a title, description, visibility setting, and schedule appropriate for the episode. Confirm that the intended audience can access the watch page.
- Prepare the encoder stream at least two hours before the event. YouTube recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start so there is time to confirm the preview.
2. Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu
OBS’s official Linux installation instructions cover Ubuntu 18.04 or newer and describe installation through the OBS Project PPA followed by apt. Because repository instructions can change, follow the current commands on the OBS Linux installation page rather than relying on an old copied command. The documented package installation command is sudo apt install obs-studio.
At first launch, run the Auto-Configuration Wizard and choose streaming. OBS says the wizard takes hardware resources and network conditions into account. It provides a sensible starting configuration, but you should still test the output and adjust it to your computer and connection. See the OBS Quick Start Guide.

3. Build an audio-first podcast scene
A podcast does not need a moving camera image to stream. A simple scene can show a static cover image or title card while OBS sends the host’s microphone and any prerecorded segments. Add only the sources needed for the episode.
Add the visual
- In OBS, create or select a scene for the episode.
- In the Sources panel, use the + button to add an image for a static cover or title card. You can also add a camera or other visual if the episode needs one.
- Arrange and resize the visual in the preview. Sources higher in the list appear over sources below them; consult the OBS Sources Guide for source behavior.
Add the microphone without duplicate capture
OBS on Linux can capture audio through ALSA or PulseAudio. You can select a microphone globally in Settings → Audio, or add a device directly as an audio input source in the scene. If you use a scene-level device source, disable that same device in global Settings → Audio to avoid capturing it twice, which can cause echo or doubled audio. OBS explains the available approaches in its Audio Sources guide.
Speak at the volume you expect to use on air and watch the audio mixer meters. Confirm that the intended microphone is active and that the level does not clip. Wear headphones during a test if you need to catch monitoring or echo problems.

4. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
Open the event’s stream settings in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. Use the URL shown in your own Live Control Room; do not guess an ingest server based on location. The YouTube RTMPS instructions explain the secure connection.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream.
- Select the YouTube RTMPS service if OBS offers it. If entering a server manually, paste the RTMPS stream URL from the Live Control Room; check that it begins with
rtmps://, notrtmp://. - Paste the stream key from the same event into OBS and apply the settings.
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not include it in a public document, screenshot, title card, or on-air scene. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.

5. Choose encoder settings that fit the connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for video; CBR bitrate encoding; a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds; and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance, since supported options and recommendations may change.
Pick resolution and bitrate together
Use YouTube’s bitrate table as a starting point, not a guarantee of stability on every computer or network. For example, YouTube lists 2 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. A static podcast cover does not need a high frame rate for motion; choose a supported resolution and frame rate appropriate to the production and the upload capacity you have tested.
Run an upload speed test on the connection you will actually use. Upload speed can be lower than download speed, and it can vary with other users or devices sharing the connection. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate with that margin, lower the video bitrate or resolution and test again. See YouTube’s streaming tips and its encoder bitrate table.

6. Run a complete test before the episode
OBS strongly encourages testing before a first live stream. Run a short private or unlisted test and check the entire signal path—not just whether OBS shows activity.
- Start OBS streaming to the test event and confirm that the preview appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
- Speak at normal on-air volume. Check that the correct microphone is active, the mixer meters respond, and the audio is clear without clipping, echo, or doubled capture.
- Play every prerecorded intro or segment you plan to use. Confirm that both its sound and any intended video appear in the preview.
- Open the watch page as a viewer and verify that it is accessible to the intended audience and that picture and sound are synchronized.
- Check the stream health indicator in Live Control Room. Monitor it before and during the actual event.
For the scheduled show, YouTube recommends preparing the encoder stream at least two hours ahead and starting OBS at least 15 minutes before the event. Wait for the preview, check the watch page, then use the Live Control Room controls to start the scheduled event. For episodes under 12 hours, YouTube says the stream is automatically archived; end the event in YouTube and stop the encoder feed when finished. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and encoder setup guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot connect to YouTube | Wrong server URL or stream key, or an RTMP URL used instead of RTMPS. | Copy the URL and key again from the event’s Live Control Room. If entering the server manually, confirm the URL begins with rtmps://. |
| Live Control Room shows no preview | OBS is not sending a feed, credentials are wrong, or the event is not configured for the encoder workflow. | Confirm the scheduled event and encoder settings in Live Control Room, then check OBS’s stream status and connection settings. |
| No microphone audio | The wrong device is selected, the microphone is muted, or Linux audio capture is not configured as expected. | Check the OBS mixer and the selected device in global audio settings or the scene’s input source. Test while speaking before going live. |
| Echo or doubled voice | The microphone may be captured globally and again as a scene source, or audio may be monitored back into the input. | Use one capture path for the device; disable its global capture if it is added directly as a scene source. |
| Stream health degrades or the feed drops | The chosen bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the connection may be fluctuating. | Test upload speed on the event connection, leave YouTube’s recommended roughly 20% bitrate headroom, and reduce bitrate or resolution if needed. |
| Recorded segment is silent or absent | The Media Source may point to the wrong file, use an unsupported format, or depend on VLC for a playlist when VLC is not installed. | Check the source’s file path and format, then play it in OBS before the live event. Install VLC if the setup depends on VLC playlists. |
8. India-specific setup and cost considerations
The official OBS and YouTube instructions cited here do not establish a special OBS installation, codec, eligibility, or ingest-server rule for India. The practical India-specific variable is the reliability and upload capacity of the internet connection at the recording location. Use the URL and key YouTube displays for your event rather than assuming a regional endpoint.

OBS Studio is installed through the Ubuntu package method described above; the main ongoing cost to consider is the equipment and internet connection you choose to use. A microphone is typical encoder hardware, but no particular microphone is required by this workflow. YouTube’s encoder guide lists microphones among common equipment: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
