To livestream an audio podcast on YouTube with a waveform, combine the episode audio with a video scene containing episode art and a visualizer, then send that scene to a YouTube Live event using an encoder such as OBS. YouTube does not generate the waveform: add a compatible live visualizer in OBS, or render the waveform into a video before streaming.
Choose how to make the waveform
There are two practical approaches. A live visualizer reacts to the audio feed as OBS runs; a pre-rendered video has the waveform built into the picture before broadcast.
| Approach | Good fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Live visualizer in OBS | You want the waveform to respond during the broadcast or need to change the scene live. | Compatibility depends on the visualizer resource, OBS version, operating system, and audio routing. Test your exact setup before going live. |
| Pre-rendered video | You want a repeatable episode presentation or a simpler live setup. | The waveform is fixed in the rendered video; changes require a new render. |
The OBS Forums list a Waveform resource, but a listing does not guarantee compatibility with your setup. Check that it works with your installed OBS version and the audio source you intend to use.
Prepare the episode and visual assets
- Have the podcast audio file and any artwork or branding ready.
- Confirm you have the rights to broadcast the episode, artwork, music, and every other element in the stream. Do not assume that permission to publish a podcast automatically covers a YouTube livestream.
- If using a live visualizer, identify the audio source it should respond to. Test that it reacts to the podcast feed—not an unrelated desktop or microphone input.
Build and test the OBS scene
- In OBS, create a scene for the episode.
- Add the podcast file as a media source and arrange the artwork or branding in the scene.
- Add and configure a waveform visualizer that works with your installed OBS version and intended audio source. If you cannot get a reliable live visualizer, use a video rendered with the waveform already included.
- Play representative audio and check that the waveform responds correctly. Confirm that the picture is composed as intended and the audio is audible and synchronized.
A still image with audio can make a video scene, but it is not a waveform. For this format, the waveform must come from a separate visual component or be part of a pre-rendered video.

Create the YouTube Live event and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab for a stream, or schedule the broadcast through Manage.
- In the event’s stream settings, get the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. Connect the encoder to the correct event and keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Start sending the OBS output and check YouTube’s preview before going live. If you scheduled the event, YouTube’s encoder workflow says to wait for the preview and select Go live.
- During the broadcast, watch YouTube’s stream health and messages. Confirm the right picture and audio are reaching the event. See YouTube’s encoder workflow.
Set encoder output for a stable stream
YouTube’s encoder settings guide, checked in 2026, lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, plus AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. RTMPS is recommended for encrypted transport. Check the current YouTube encoder settings before publishing because platform specifications can change.
Use a bitrate your connection can sustain
For one specific reference point, YouTube’s current table lists 1080p30 H.264 video at a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended video bitrate. These are platform guidance, not a promise that a particular connection will be stable. Choose quality to fit your available upload connection, and test before the event.

Check audio and frame rate
YouTube’s guidance allows frame rates up to 60 fps. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. A podcast visualizer usually does not need HDR; if the scene does use HDR, consult YouTube’s separate HDR requirements rather than assuming ordinary settings apply.
Test with realistic material
Use a representative section of the episode and the actual scene, including waveform movement. YouTube advises: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Check the preview, sync, levels, waveform response, and stream health before relying on the setup for an audience.

Plan for long broadcasts and YouTube archives
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If your continuous broadcast will run longer, plan for the archive limit and for managing or restarting the stream; do not assume one broadcast will produce a complete archive beyond that duration. See YouTube’s encoder workflow.

No universal compatibility is established. Test the visualizer with your OBS version, operating system, and actual audio routing; a pre-rendered waveform video is an alternative.
Will StreamNeo add a waveform to my podcast?
No. Prepare and verify a video with the waveform already included, then upload it for cloud playback.
