How to Use Netflix Picture in Picture on Windows and Mac

Netflix desktop Picture-in-Picture comes from your browser, not a Netflix setting. Here are the exact steps for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, with troubleshooting for missing controls.

Netflix does not provide a separate Picture-in-Picture setting for Windows or Mac. On a computer, the floating player is supplied by your web browser. Start a documentary in Netflix, then use the PiP control for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari.

Netflix currently supports Chrome 117 or later, Edge 118 or later, Firefox 111 or later, and Opera 92 or later. Windows 10 and 11 are supported; on Mac, Netflix requires macOS 10.15.5 or later, while Safari 14 requires macOS 11 or later.

Use Picture-in-Picture in Chrome

The Chrome method is the same on Windows and Mac:

  1. Open Netflix in Chrome and start the movie or episode.
  2. Click Chrome’s Media control icon near the right side of the address bar. It looks like a music-note or media-control button and appears while media is playing.
  3. Select Enter picture-in-picture.
  4. Drag the floating video window to a convenient position, such as a corner of the screen.

This browser-level command can work even when Netflix does not show a PiP button inside its own player. The original Netflix tab needs to remain open because the floating window is a detached view of that tab’s video.

Use Picture-in-Picture in Microsoft Edge

Edge 118 and later can show a Picture-in-Picture overlay on supported webpages on both Windows and macOS.

  3. Click the button to detach the video.

If the overlay is absent, try Chrome or Firefox rather than following old advice about enabling Global Media Controls in edge://flags. The relevant Edge flag and interface have changed or disappeared in some versions.

On managed work or school computers, an administrator can disable the overlay with Edge’s PictureInPictureOverlayEnabled policy. If Edge PiP is unavailable only on that device, organizational policy may be the reason.

Use Picture-in-Picture in Firefox on Windows

Firefox offers two dependable ways to detach a Netflix video.

  1. Open Netflix in Safari and start the documentary or other video.
  2. Move the pointer over the video to reveal the playback controls.
  3. Click the playback speed button.
  4. Choose Picture in Picture.

Safari also supports a Viewer workflow: while watching a video in Viewer, clicking another window can activate Picture in Picture. Safari is the Mac browser for which Netflix lists the highest maximum resolution—up to Ultra HD—although Ultra HD still depends on Netflix’s separate plan, device, display, and connection requirements.

What to do when the PiP button is missing

A missing control does not necessarily mean Netflix cannot play in a floating window. Try these checks in order:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  1. Exit full-screen mode. Firefox does not show its Picture-in-Picture item in the right-click menu while the video is full-screen.
  2. Use the browser shortcut. In Firefox, press Ctrl + Shift + ] on Windows or Command + Option + Shift + ] on Mac.
  3. Open Firefox’s menu instead of Netflix’s. Exit full-screen mode, then hold Shift while right-clicking the video. Double-right-clicking can also expose Firefox’s menu. Select Picture-in-Picture.
  4. Enable Firefox’s video controls. Go to Firefox menu → Settings → General, scroll to Browsing, and turn on Enable picture-in-picture video controls.
  5. Check the video itself. Firefox normally displays its toggle only for videos longer than 45 seconds and with an audio track.
  6. Update the browser. Netflix can change its web-player markup, and a browser update can alter how the PiP control is exposed.
  7. Try another supported browser. Chrome’s Media control menu is often the simplest fallback; Firefox is another option when a visible player button is missing.

Some Firefox users may encounter third-party extensions advertised as Netflix PiP fixes. For example, the NetFix – PiP for Netflix add-on was published specifically for cases where the Netflix button stopped appearing. It is not a Netflix feature and requests permission to access netflix.com, so install it only if you understand and accept that access.

Why the PiP window may not behave normally

Browser PiP is not a second Netflix stream. It is the browser’s detached view of the existing video element. That distinction explains several common problems:

  • Captions may not appear in every browser or player state.
  • Seek buttons and keyboard controls may work inconsistently.
  • The floating window can close if the Netflix tab, playback session, or protected-content session is interrupted.
  • Extensions, strict privacy settings, hardware acceleration, missing codecs, or encrypted-media restrictions can interfere with playback.

First update the browser and confirm that it meets Netflix’s supported-browser requirements. If Edge has broader video problems, Microsoft specifically identifies disabled hardware acceleration, missing codecs, and blocked encrypted-media components as possible causes.

What is the fastest Netflix PiP shortcut on Windows?

In Firefox, press Ctrl + Shift + ]. In Chrome, open the Media control menu near the address bar and choose Enter picture-in-picture.

How do I turn on Netflix PiP on a Mac?

In Safari, start playback, click the playback speed button, and choose Picture in Picture. In Chrome, use Media control → Enter picture-in-picture; in Firefox, use the on-video control or Command + Option + Shift + ].

Why does Netflix close when I open Picture-in-Picture?

The PiP window depends on the original browser playback session. Extensions, privacy settings, DRM or encrypted-media restrictions, hardware acceleration problems, browser bugs, and interruptions to the Netflix tab can cause it to close.

The Bottom Line

For the most reliable desktop route, use Chrome’s Media control → Enter picture-in-picture. Firefox is useful when you want a keyboard shortcut, while Safari provides a straightforward control on Mac. If the button disappears, leave full-screen mode, enable Firefox’s PiP controls if necessary, and try another supported browser before installing third-party software.
