Depending on the source post and your account, you can appear beside the original, in a picture-in-picture or green-screen layout, or after the original clip in a sequential Remix.
To start, open an eligible Reel in Instagram’s mobile app, tap the three-dot menu, and choose Remix or Remix this Reel. Instagram changes labels and menu locations by app version, account, device, and region, so you may also find Remix under a broader reuse menu.
What is Instagram Reels Remix?
Remix is Instagram’s built-in response and collaboration format. It lets you create a new Reel using an existing eligible Reel as its source. You can react to it, explain it, challenge it, continue it, perform alongside it, or add commentary.
It is broadly comparable to TikTok’s Duet feature, but it is not simply a repost. Your Remix is a separate Reel made by you, while the original post remains connected to and attributed as the source. Instagram introduced Remix for Reels in 2021 and later expanded the feature with additional layouts and support for some public photos and video posts. Meta describes the expanded Remix formats here.

How to Remix an Instagram Reel
- Open the Instagram mobile app.
- Find the Reel you want to use.
- Open the Reel fully, then tap the three-dot menu.
- Choose Remix, Remix this Reel, or a similarly named reuse option.
- Choose a layout if Instagram offers more than one.
- Record your response or add eligible clips from your camera roll.
- Trim or rearrange your contribution and adjust the audio, voice-over, effects, text, stickers, or captions available in your editor.
- Tap Next or continue to the sharing screen.
- Add a cover, caption, tags, location, and audience settings.
- Tap Share to publish the Remix as a new Reel.
The exact controls can differ between iPhone and Android and may change as Instagram tests new interfaces. If you do not see the option immediately, open the Reel rather than using an embedded preview or shortcut, then check the three-dot menu again.
Instagram Remix layouts explained
Side-by-side or split-screen
This is the most recognizable Remix format. The original and your response appear at the same time, either horizontally or vertically.
Use it for immediate reactions, dance or music responses, before-and-after comparisons, demonstrations, and commentary that depends on seeing the source continuously. Keep your face, gestures, and on-screen text clear enough to understand when viewers watch without sound.
Green screen
Green screen places you in front of the source content. It works well when you need to explain a chart, screenshot, headline, location, tutorial, or visual claim.
Check the preview carefully: your body can cover important text or details in the original. Position yourself so the source remains legible, and do not present a screenshot or headline as reliable evidence without checking it.
Picture-in-picture
Picture-in-picture keeps one video prominent while placing the other in a smaller window. It is useful for compact reactions, demonstrations, and commentary where you need to point toward a particular detail in the source.

Sequential Remix
In a sequential Remix, the original plays first and your contribution follows. This is usually better than a split screen when your response needs uninterrupted time.
Use it for a second part of a story, a rebuttal, a follow-up demonstration, a tutorial continuation, or an answer to a claim made in the original. Meta specifically added this option so the response can appear after, rather than alongside, the source Reel. See Meta’s description of the sequential format.

Editing the source and your response
After you record or import your contribution, Instagram may provide controls for trimming, rearranging clips, adding text and stickers, applying effects, choosing music, adding captions, recording a voice-over, and selecting a cover. The available tools depend on the post, device, account, and current version of the app.
Balance the audio
Use the audio controls to set the relative volume of the original Reel and your response. Meta’s Remix workflow includes separate volume adjustment and voice-over tools. Meta’s original Remix announcement explains the audio controls.
- Lower the source audio when you are speaking over it.
- Keep dialogue louder than background music.
- Preview the entire Remix, not just the recording section.
- Check whether the original sound is muted or unavailable in your region.
- Use Instagram’s permitted music and audio tools instead of importing a soundtrack without checking your rights.
If the source contains copyrighted music, the platform’s Remix button is not a universal clearance mechanism for every element in the video. Copyright rules vary by jurisdiction, and additional permission may be sensible for commercial, sensitive, or substantially altered uses.
Who can Remix a Reel?
Eligibility depends on the source post’s privacy and reuse settings. Public accounts are the main source of Remix-eligible content, but a public account does not guarantee that every post can be Remixed.

A creator can disable Remixing for eligible content or for an individual post. Content from private accounts is governed by the account’s privacy settings and is not generally available for unrestricted public Remixing. Older posts may also follow different settings from newly published content and may need to be enabled manually.
Instagram has expanded Remix to certain public photos and public video posts beyond Reels, but availability can depend on the post type, publication date, account settings, region, and current rollout. The safest test is whether Instagram displays a Remix or reuse option for that specific post.
How to enable or disable Remixing on your content
Instagram has used different labels and settings locations over time. Look for Remix, reuse, content reuse, or wording such as Allow other people to create with and reuse your content.
Account-wide control
- Go to your profile.
- Tap the three-line menu.
- Open Settings and activity or Settings.
- Open the privacy, sharing, or reuse section.
- Look for Reels and Remix, Sharing and reuse, or a similar control.
- Turn Remixing or content reuse on or off.
If the path differs, use the settings search field and search for “Remix,” “reuse,” or “content reuse.”
Control a single Reel
- Open one of your Reels.
- Tap the three-dot menu.
- Choose Enable Remixing, Disable Remixing, or the equivalent reuse control.
Account-level and individual-post controls may not appear with identical wording on every account. Older coverage documents separate account-wide and per-Reel controls; current interfaces may group them with broader sharing settings. Why is the Remix button missing?
A missing button does not necessarily mean Instagram has permanently removed Remix. Diagnose the source post first, then the app and account.

Check the source post
- The account is private: private content is not generally available for unrestricted public Remixing.
- The creator disabled Remixing: the post or account may prohibit reuse.
- The post type is unsupported: Instagram supports certain public Reels, photos, and videos, not every post in every account.
- The post is older: older content may not automatically be eligible under newer reuse rules.
Check the app and account
- Open the post in the full Instagram mobile app rather than an embedded view.
- Tap the three-dot menu after the Reel has fully loaded.
- Look for Remix, Reuse, or Create with this Reel under another menu.
- Try a different public Reel from another creator.
- Update Instagram, force-close it, and reopen it.
- Sign out and back in if the feature is missing across otherwise eligible posts.
- Check the account-status area for temporary restrictions or feature limitations.
- Test another eligible account or device if available.
- Ask the original creator to enable Remixing if the post is old or restricted.
- Use Instagram’s in-app Report a problem option if Remix is absent across many eligible posts.
Instagram’s interface can also change where the control appears. User reports of menu changes can help explain confusion, but they are anecdotal rather than a guarantee of how every account behaves. Recent user reports illustrate this variability.
Do not make downloading someone else’s Reel and manually re-uploading it your default workaround. That can create attribution, copyright, privacy, and platform-policy problems.

Can you Remix your own Reel?
Yes. Instagram explicitly supports Remixing your own Reels. It can be useful for adding a follow-up explanation, answering a comment, correcting or updating an earlier statement, reacting to older work, or turning one tutorial into a question-and-answer sequence. Meta confirms that creators can Remix their own Reels.
Can you Remix photos or ordinary videos?
Instagram expanded Remix beyond Reels to certain public photos and later to public video posts. That does not mean every Instagram photo or video can be Remixed. The option depends on the post type, account settings, date, region, and current feature availability.
If a public post has no Remix or reuse control, its owner may have disabled the feature, or that post may not be included in the current rollout.

The other creator publishes a separate Reel on their profile. The source remains connected to the original post and attributed through Instagram’s native workflow. The Remix can be distributed according to the Remixer’s audience and account settings.

You may receive an activity or notification signal when someone Remixes your content, but notification behavior can vary by account and app version. A Remix may increase exposure or invite collaboration, but it does not guarantee that the original creator will receive the same reach as the new post.
How to make a Remix that adds value
- Give viewers a reason to watch: react, explain, test, correct, compare, or continue something specific.
- Make the first second clear: use a short spoken or on-screen explanation of what your response adds.
- Choose the layout for the idea: use split screen for immediate reactions and sequential Remix for longer explanations.
- Use on-screen text: many viewers watch without sound.
- Keep the source relevant: show or play only as much of it as viewers need for context.
- Add original commentary: repeating the source with little change creates a weak and potentially confusing response.
- Credit naturally: the native Remix relationship supplies attribution, but a clear caption can provide useful context.
- Check claims before amplifying them: this is especially important for news, health, financial advice, accusations, and alleged evidence.
- Protect privacy: do not use Remix to expose private information or target a private individual.
Copyright, privacy, and attribution
Instagram’s built-in Remix function is different from downloading another person’s video and publishing it again. The native tool provides a platform-level reuse mechanism and preserves the relationship between the source and response, but the button is not a blanket license to use every copyrighted song, image, clip, logo, or third-party appearance in any way.
A creator can disable Remixing, and copyright and privacy laws differ by jurisdiction. For commercial campaigns, sensitive subjects, or a response that substantially changes the meaning of the original, obtain appropriate permission or professional legal advice where necessary. Do not remove attribution, watermarks, or context.

Is Instagram Remix the same as TikTok Duet?
They serve a similar purpose: both let you respond to existing content in a connected post. Instagram calls its feature Remix and offers several layouts, including split screen, green screen, picture-in-picture, and sequential playback.
Can private accounts be Remixed?
Private-account content is not generally available for unrestricted public Remixing. Eligibility is controlled by privacy and reuse settings.
Can I Remix a photo?
