To send a 4K, 60 fps video file to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, encode it at 3840×2160 and 60 fps, use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your codec, set a two-second keyframe interval, and stream to the RTMPS address and key shown in your YouTube Live Control Room. The command below is an H.264 template, not a universal drop-in: your FFmpeg build, source file, encoder capacity, and upload connection all matter.

Choose the codec and bitrate

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends these video bitrates for 2160p at 60 fps. They are recommendations, not a promise that your computer can encode in real time or your connection can sustain the stream.

Codec YouTube-recommended video bitrate When it may fit
H.264 50 Mbps A conventional SDR stream where broad compatibility is important.
HEVC (H.265) or AV1 35 Mbps When your encoder can produce the codec in real time and your playback workflow supports it.

These figures cover video, not audio or transport overhead. Leave upload headroom rather than choosing an internet connection that can only just match the video target. YouTube advises testing upload capacity and choosing settings your connection can sustain. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the reference for current recommendations.

Prepare the file and FFmpeg

This method sends a local media file, rather than a camera or capture input. For a file, -re makes FFmpeg read at the file’s native rate so it can simulate a live source. FFmpeg warns against using a low read rate on actual capture or live inputs because it may cause packet loss. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Use a source with the picture and sound you intend to broadcast. If it lacks an audio stream, the optional audio mapping in the example permits that, but YouTube may still require audio for your intended stream.
  • Confirm your installed FFmpeg build includes libx264 before using the H.264 example. Encoder availability depends on how FFmpeg was built.
  • Check that the machine can encode the source at 4K60 in real time. A command cannot compensate for inadequate encoding capacity.
  • For conventional SDR, YouTube recommends square pixels, progressive scan, Rec. 709, 8-bit depth, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended stereo audio values are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.

Get your YouTube ingest details

In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the stream URL and stream key for your broadcast. They are account-specific; there is no universal working key or ingest URL to copy from an article. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which sends RTMP across an SSL connection. Its FFmpeg protocol documentation describes RTMPS, and the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes primary and backup ingestion addresses and stream-health status.

Treat the key like a password. Do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs. If it is compromised, YouTube’s live stream settings help explains how to reset it in Live Control Room.

Use this H.264 RTMPS command template

Replace input.mp4 with your file and replace the endpoint placeholder with the RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private.

ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4"
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
  -b:v 50M -maxrate 50M -bufsize 100M
  -r 60 -g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0
  -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"

The command selects the first video stream and, if present, the first audio stream. The 50 Mbps target follows YouTube’s 2160p60 H.264 recommendation. At 60 fps, a 120-frame GOP corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says it must not exceed four seconds.

The rate-control flags express a target, but exact encoder behavior can vary. Check the output bitrate and YouTube’s stream-health indicators; do not assume a flag guarantees a particular network bitrate. The command’s pixel format and frame-rate options also do not make every source a perfect 4K60 input. Confirm the outgoing stream’s actual resolution, frame rate, and keyframe cadence.

If you need HEVC or AV1

Use an FFmpeg build with a suitable encoder and configure the video target to YouTube’s 35 Mbps recommendation for HEVC or AV1 at 2160p60. Hardware encoder names and options vary across builds and systems, so check the encoder help available in your installation instead of copying an unverified NVENC, QSV, or VideoToolbox command. Confirm that the encoder can keep up in real time and that the playback workflow supports your codec. For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube favors H.265; AV1 is not supported for HDR.

Test before broadcasting

  1. Check that the outgoing stream is 3840×2160 at 60 fps with the intended codec. Confirm a two-second keyframe interval and do not exceed four seconds.
  2. Run a test with audio and motion similar to the material you plan to show. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  3. Test upload capacity and leave room for audio and transport overhead. Use a stable video bitrate that your connection can maintain.
  4. Watch stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube’s documented health messages include low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and keyframe/GOP problems; use those diagnostics to guide changes.
  5. During the event, continue monitoring stream health. YouTube advises users to monitor it and review messages.

Understand the HLS alternative

HLS is a different YouTube ingestion workflow, not a one-flag replacement for the FLV/RTMPS command above. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies M2TS multiplexing, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and up to 60 fps. It recommends segments between one and four seconds, with a five-second maximum. Because HLS is segment-based, YouTube says it usually has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingestion. Consult the HLS ingestion guide before configuring it.

Troubleshooting common 4K60 problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder or cannot initialize it The installed build may not include libx264 or the encoder you selected. Check available encoders in your FFmpeg build and use an encoder it actually provides.
Frames fall behind or the stream stutters The system may not encode 4K60 in real time, or the upload connection may be unstable. Test encoding capacity and upload bitrate separately; select settings your hardware and connection can sustain.
YouTube reports low bitrate The outgoing video bitrate may be below target or inconsistent. Inspect the actual output bitrate and connection stability; use stream-health messages rather than assuming the command’s target is being met.
YouTube reports frame-rate mismatch The output cadence may not match the intended 60 fps. Verify the encoded output frame rate and whether frame-rate conversion is appropriate for your source.
YouTube reports a keyframe or GOP issue The keyframe interval may be wrong or vary from the intended cadence. Check the encoder’s GOP behavior. Aim for two seconds and stay at or below YouTube’s four-second maximum.
The stream will not connect The RTMPS address or key may be wrong, stale, or mistyped. Copy the current account-specific ingest details from Live Control Room. Keep the key private; reset it there if compromised.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you are streaming a pre-recorded documentary or playlist as a continuing YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to leaving FFmpeg running on your own computer. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos in the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
