Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to sequence compatible music files, then configure FFmpeg separately to encode and send a live feed to YouTube. The playlist does not make files with different codecs compatible, loop itself indefinitely, set YouTube’s ingest settings, or grant music rights. This guide covers each part of the workflow and its failure points.
What an FFmpeg concat file does—and does not do
An FFmpeg concat file is a text playlist read by the concat demuxer. FFmpeg presents the listed files in order as one virtual input and adjusts timestamps so each follows the previous one. It does not rewrite or normalize the media streams.
As the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation puts it: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Matching extensions or filenames are not proof that files meet this requirement.
For a 24/7 broadcast, treat the job as three separate tasks: prepare compatible media and accurate timing, encode and deliver a live output to YouTube, and secure the rights to broadcast every track.

Choose the right concatenation method

FFmpeg’s concat protocol is a separate, file-level option documented for certain containers. It is not interchangeable with the concat demuxer playlist described here.
Inspect and prepare the files
Check every input’s streams
Before writing the playlist, inspect each file’s video and audio streams. Confirm the codec, time base, stream layout and duration information are compatible across the set. An audio-only track and a video-with-audio file, for example, do not become a uniform input merely because both are listed in the same script.

- If the streams already match, test the demuxer workflow without re-encoding.
- If they differ, create compatible versions first or use a filter-and-encode workflow.
- Check actual media duration as well as stored duration metadata. Incorrect duration information can cause timestamp errors or artifacts at transitions.
Use the duration directive only when needed
The demuxer calculates where each file follows the previous one from duration information. Unequal stream lengths can produce gaps, and inaccurate metadata can shift transitions. Where a file’s stored duration is wrong and you know the correct duration, the concat script supports a duration directive to override it. Do not add guessed durations: verify them against the media.

Save a plain-text file such as playlist.ffconcat with this structure:

file 'track-03.mp4'For automatic format recognition, ffconcat version 1.0 must be the exact first line: no leading whitespace and no byte-order mark. The documentation specifies extended-ASCII text. Quote or escape paths containing spaces or special characters according to FFmpeg’s syntax; shell and operating-system quoting rules also matter when you run a command. Relative paths are convenient if the playlist and media are together, but make sure each path resolves from FFmpeg’s working context.
Loop and send the sequence as a live stream
The playlist sets the order; looping it indefinitely is a separate input choice. Live delivery also requires real-time pacing and an output encoder configuration. There is no single command that is guaranteed to work for every combination of audio-only tracks, music videos, FFmpeg builds and input codecs.

Start by checking the options supported by your installed FFmpeg version, then adapt its concat-demuxer input looping and real-time pacing options to your media. If you use an illustrative command, replace placeholders with your own paths and YouTube ingest details; never reuse another creator’s stream key. Test the complete command against the exact files and FFmpeg build you plan to use.
Set output for YouTube ingestion
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the resolution, frame rate and codec you select. Its guidance supports H.264, H.265 or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and specifies a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. The guidance recommends 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz stereo audio. Use the current bitrate table for your chosen video codec, resolution and frame rate; leave upload headroom rather than setting the encoder at the full capacity of your connection.

These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality or uninterrupted delivery. A copy-only output avoids an encode, but works only when the incoming streams are suitable for the output container and YouTube ingest. If they are not, configure an encode or prepare compatible files first. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport; use RTMP or RTMPS as appropriate for the encoder and setup.

- Create or select a live event. In YouTube’s live interface, use the event’s current ingestion address and stream name/key. Do not assume an old key or endpoint is still the right one.
- Enter your own ingest details in FFmpeg. Keep the stream key private. The YouTube Live Streaming API documents ingestion addresses, stream names, active/ready/error states and health status; see the liveStreams resource.
- Run a preflight using representative content. Test with audio and visual motion similar to the intended stream. Check for smooth transitions, audible gaps, unexpected black video, and a stable encoder output.
- Watch Live Control Room. Confirm YouTube is receiving data and inspect its stream-health status and messages before leaving a continuous broadcast unattended.
Clear music rights before going live
You must have the rights needed to broadcast every piece of music and other content in the stream. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the necessary rights, including applicable music licensing rights. YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content; a match can lead to interruption or termination under its copyright guidance for live streams.
A license for an ordinary upload does not necessarily cover a continuous live broadcast. Nor does credit, buying a track, or a “royalty-free” label by itself establish livestream permission. If you have licensed third-party music and still receive a Content ID interruption, check whether the rights holder must add your channel to its Content ID allowlist.
Troubleshoot common concat and YouTube failures
- Playlist is not recognized automatically: Verify that the file begins exactly with
ffconcat version 1.0, with no blank line, whitespace or byte-order mark before it. - FFmpeg rejects a file or transitions break: Compare the files’ stream layouts, codecs and time bases. Make compatible inputs or switch to the concat filter when conversion is required.
- There are gaps or artifacts between tracks: Check stream lengths and duration metadata. The demuxer uses durations to calculate timestamps; use a verified
durationoverride if the stored duration is inaccurate. - YouTube reports missing or unhealthy input: Recheck the current ingestion address and stream name/key, supported output codecs, bitrate and keyframe settings. Confirm upload capacity and read the health messages in Live Control Room.
- The stream stops after a copyright notice: Review the matched content and the rights for continuous live use. For licensed music, ask whether the channel needs Content ID allowlisting.
