The important distinction: an EC2 instance is still a computer, just a remote one—and a YouTube playlist URL is not, by itself, a live encoder input. The encoder needs authorized source media, then sends a continuous audio/video feed to YouTube using your stream URL and private stream key.
What “playlist livestream” means in this setup
A YouTube playlist page is a collection of videos for viewers to watch. A livestream created with an encoder is different: encoder software reads source media or another authorized input and sends a live audio/video feed to YouTube. You cannot simply paste a YouTube playlist URL into an encoder and expect it to become a continuous live broadcast.
For a loop, you need source files the encoder can access reliably, plus a way for the encoder to play them continuously and produce a live output. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. In the AWS setup, EC2 replaces the local always-on computer; it does not remove the need for an encoder or source media.
What you need before you begin
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned start.
- Authorized source video and audio. Confirm you have the rights to stream every item, and check YouTube’s current rules before broadcasting.
- An encoder that can run unattended. It must be able to read your media, produce the intended output, and send it to YouTube.
- An AWS account and a Linux EC2 instance in Mumbai. AWS identifies the Mumbai region as
ap-south-1. Choose instance capacity only after testing your actual codec, resolution, frame rate, and encoding method; there is no one-size-fits-all instance size established for this workflow. - Your YouTube stream URL and private stream key. Treat the key like a password. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- A cost estimate based on your workload. Include compute hours, storage, outgoing data transfer, and any managed media services you plan to use.
Set up an always-on encoder on AWS Mumbai
- Enable live streaming on YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming workflow and complete channel activation. If this is your first stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation, as YouTube advises.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio’s live workflow or Live Control Room and create or schedule the event. Copy the server or stream URL and stream key shown for that event. Keep the key private; do not put it in a public script, repository, or support post.
- Launch a Linux EC2 instance in
ap-south-1. Select an instance only after considering the media codec, target resolution and frame rate, and whether your encoder will use software encoding. AWS offers multiple general-purpose and compute-optimized EC2 families in Mumbai, but the right size depends on the workload. Test the intended media and settings before relying on the machine for a continuous stream. - Install and configure your encoder. Make the authorized files accessible to the instance, then configure the encoder to play the source as a continuous output. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder’s streaming destination settings. The exact installation commands, encoder interface, and EC2 size depend on the software and media format you choose; they are not universal across setups.
- Set output parameters to match your source and encoder capacity. Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval supported by the encoder and suitable for the material you are sending. Confirm that the instance can encode and upload steadily at those settings. Do not assume that a higher target quality will work just because the source file has that resolution; encoding capacity and a stable upload path also matter.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. Start its output, then confirm in Live Control Room that YouTube is receiving the feed and the preview looks and sounds right. Start or confirm the broadcast using the controls for the event you created.
- Make the process recoverable. Configure process supervision or an equivalent restart mechanism, monitor whether the encoder is running and the source remains readable, and decide how you will handle a dropped connection or a missing file. These are operational safeguards, not a guarantee that the stream will never fail.
Choose the ingest protocol deliberately
Use the protocol supported by your selected encoder and the event’s YouTube settings. RTMP is the usual encoder workflow; HLS is an alternative with different configuration requirements and higher latency because it sends media in segments. Do not treat an HLS media playlist as a YouTube watch playlist: the former sequences transport segments for an encoder-to-platform feed; the latter is a collection of viewer-facing videos.

If you specifically configure HLS ingestion, YouTube’s guide specifies 1–4 second segments, transport-stream (TS) segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, no byte-range mode, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. These are HLS-specific instructions, not settings to copy into an RTMP encoder.
Plan for restarts, reconnects, and archive limits
- Encoder stops: A process supervisor can restart a failed process, but it cannot fix a bad configuration, exhausted resources, or an unreadable source file. Monitor both process status and the incoming feed.
- Connection drops: Decide how the encoder should reconnect and verify that YouTube is receiving video again in Live Control Room. A restart policy alone does not confirm the broadcast has recovered.
- Source is unavailable: Keep media in a location the EC2 instance can access for the entire run, and check that a loop reaches the next item as expected. A playlist or file reference that works only on your home machine will not automatically be available to EC2.
- Stream key exposure: If the key becomes public, replace it in YouTube’s controls and update the encoder before restarting. Avoid embedding it in logs or files that others can read.
- Long broadcasts: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on automatic archive availability for a broadcast lasting 12 hours or more based on that guidance.
One continuous broadcast or recurring scheduled events?
If you want a single ongoing show, configure the encoder to keep sending a continuous feed and plan for reconnects. If your channel instead publishes recurring scheduled sessions, the YouTube Live API supports workflows that reuse a stream configuration for separate broadcast events. Google’s API documentation says only one event is live at a time in that pattern. These are different operating models: reusable encoder settings do not turn a sequence of events into one uninterrupted broadcast.

Estimate AWS cost from the actual workload
There is no responsible fixed monthly estimate without assumptions about instance type, region, media storage, output bitrate, outgoing transfer, and hours of operation. AWS offers on-demand and commitment pricing models for EC2, but the Mumbai instance price and total cost depend on the choices you make. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator with a named instance in ap-south-1, storage, transfer, and operating-hour assumptions, then verify the rates before launch. Include any extra managed media service in the estimate rather than treating compute as the whole bill.
Before committing to an instance, test the intended source and output settings and check whether the instance has enough capacity. The practical comparison is not only instance price: weigh reliable access to the media, restart and reconnect behavior, target quality and encoding needs, protocol compatibility and latency, operational effort, and total cost.
