If audio matches the picture at the start of a continuous church YouTube stream but falls further out of sync later, measure the error over time before changing FFmpeg options. A steady offset and audio drift that gets worse over time are different problems: a one-time shift may address the first, but not a growing mismatch. The exact fix depends on your command, capture devices, timestamps and logs; no single flag can be recommended responsibly without those details.
First determine whether it is a fixed offset or cumulative drift
Use a recognizable event that is both visible and audible—a clap, a spoken word with visible mouth movement, or another clear cue. Compare it near stream startup and again after a known elapsed time. Record whether audio leads or trails the image and approximately how far at each observation. Repeat after a reconnect or source change if the symptom appears related to either.
| What you observe | What it suggests | What to investigate next |
|---|---|---|
| The same lead or lag is present at startup and later. | A fixed offset or initial alignment problem is more likely than accumulating drift. | Initial alignment, stream timestamps and where the offset enters the signal path. |
| The mismatch grows as the stream runs. | A timing or rate issue is more likely than a single fixed offset. | Clock sources, capture cadence, timestamp continuity, and dropped or duplicated data. |
| The mismatch changes after a reconnect or source change. | The timing behavior may depend on a particular input, session or timestamp transition. | Compare logs and measurements before and after that event; do not assume the same cause applies throughout. |
This distinction is also described in the FFmpeg Cookbook article on audio drift that gets worse over time. The observations are diagnostic clues, not proof of a particular fault in your setup.
Map the audio, video and clock path
Before editing a live command, write down how each stream reaches FFmpeg and how its timing is established. Separate devices can use separate clocks, but the title alone does not establish that your church system has separate devices—or identify any other root cause.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Do audio and video come from the same device or different devices?
- Does audio enter through a mixer, audio interface, camera, USB input or network source?
- Which FFmpeg inputs and
-mapselections feed the output? - Are the audio and video streams copied or re-encoded?
- What sample rate and frame rate are configured at capture and output?
- Is software resampling, buffering or timestamp rewriting present anywhere in the chain?
Keep a diagnostic record with the full command but remove the YouTube stream key, FFmpeg version and build output, startup stream metadata, representative logs, and sync measurements at more than one elapsed time. These details help distinguish a clock or capture-rate mismatch from a timestamp discontinuity or output-mode issue.
Read FFmpeg sync and timestamp options in context
Synchronization behavior and -adrift_threshold
FFmpeg documents synchronization modes and output timestamp handling, including -adrift_threshold: a minimum difference between timestamps and audio data that triggers adding or dropping samples. The documentation notes that -async must be positive for this threshold behavior. The applicable sync mode, option placement and installed FFmpeg version matter; do not paste an option into a production command based only on its name. Consult the documentation for the build you actually run before testing a change. FFmpeg command-line documentation

-dts_delta_threshold is for discontinuities, not every kind of drift
This option addresses detected timestamp discontinuities when a jump exceeds its threshold. FFmpeg documents its use with formats that allow discontinuities, including MPEG-TS and HLS. It is not a general correction for a persistent mismatch between audio and video clocks. FFmpeg disables this correction when -copyts is used, except when timestamp wrapping is detected. Consider it only when the input format and logs point to the relevant discontinuity.
FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly and corresponds to its newest revision. If your installed build is older, check that version’s documentation rather than assuming every current option behaves identically. FFmpeg documentation index and version information

Verify YouTube ingest settings and monitor the actual stream
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; up to 60 fps; and a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds between keyframes. Its advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz for stereo audio. Treat these as ingest settings to check, not as a diagnosis or cure for cumulative sync drift. YouTube live encoder settings
Before a service, test with speech and music or instrumental sections that resemble the planned program. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and movement, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Watch the YouTube preview or player as well as FFmpeg’s local output; YouTube’s live-stream tips also recommend ongoing audio/video quality monitoring and checking that the local archive file grows. Make one controlled change, then measure again
- Save the working command and baseline logs, with the stream key removed from any shared copy.
- Choose a test stream and repeat the same sync observations at startup and after the same known elapsed time.
- Change one setting or one part of the signal path that your measurements point to; avoid changing several variables together.
- Compare whether the offset remains stable, grows, changes direction or changes after a reconnect. Keep the resulting command and logs.
- Only consider a permanent change after the test supports it. If the evidence does not isolate the cause, gather more measurements instead of replacing hardware or guessing at a correction.
The exact corrective setting remains dependent on your command, signal chain and measurements. No specific audio interface, capture device, sync generator or cable can be recommended from the information in the question alone.

| Symptom or clue | Check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Audio starts in sync but falls further behind or ahead. | Compare the size and direction of the mismatch at multiple elapsed times. | Investigate clock sources, capture cadence, timestamp continuity and dropped or duplicated data; a single fixed shift does not address a growing error. |
| The mismatch is already present and stays about the same. | Compare the startup cue with later cues and inspect where stream timing is established. | Investigate initial alignment or fixed timestamps rather than treating it as cumulative drift. |
| A log shows a timestamp jump. | Check which input format produced it and whether the command uses -copyts. |
Assess whether the documented discontinuity handling applies to that input; do not assume -dts_delta_threshold repairs a clock-rate mismatch. |
| The issue follows a reconnect or input change. | Compare the input and output logs across that transition. | Test the affected path or transition separately and remeasure before modifying the full command. |
| FFmpeg output seems acceptable but the YouTube preview is not. | Check YouTube’s stream health and messages, ingest recommendations, and the local archive’s growth. | Use a representative test stream and compare the local output with YouTube’s preview/player during the same interval. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping uploaded video live on YouTube; it does not diagnose or repair sync drift in your FFmpeg capture chain. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so no computer, OBS or home connection has to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
