You can loop a prerecorded sermon on YouTube Live with OBS Studio running on a Windows PC: add the recording as a looping Media Source, connect OBS to a YouTube Live event with its server URL and stream key, then start the event after its preview appears. The PC and internet connection must stay available for the whole stream, so test the setup and disable sleep before relying on it for a service.
Before you set up the sermon loop
- Check live-stream eligibility first. YouTube requires a verified channel without live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the service. YouTube’s encoder workflow explains activation; its live-streaming tips cover eligibility and preparation.
- Confirm the recording and audio rights. Having a copy of a sermon or song does not itself establish permission to livestream or archive it. Check that the church’s permissions and applicable licenses cover the recording, music, images, territory, livestream and any archive. YouTube’s setup guidance cannot determine what a particular church’s licenses allow.
- Check the PC against the job. OBS supports Windows 10 and Windows 11, and lists a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as a basic requirement. Meeting that baseline does not guarantee the PC can encode a chosen resolution and frame rate. Run OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard, then test this machine with the intended content and settings. See OBS system requirements.
- Plan for the whole broadcast. The PC must remain powered, awake and connected to the internet. If using a laptop, check its lid action as well as its sleep timeout.
Set up a single sermon recording in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and run its Auto Configuration Wizard. Use the wizard as a starting point, not as proof the setup is ready for a real service.
- Create a scene. In OBS, add a scene for the sermon broadcast. A single scene with the recording is enough for a simple loop.
- Add the video. Select Sources → + → Media Source, choose the local sermon file, and enable Loop. OBS describes this option as specifying whether the file plays again after playback completes. OBS lists MP4 among supported formats. The Media Sources documentation covers supported sources and options.
- Fit the picture in the preview. Check that the video is framed as intended and that nothing important is cropped. Play it in OBS to check picture and audio before connecting to the event.
- For a playlist, use a VLC Video source instead. OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and a loop-playlist option, but VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. For one recording, the ordinary Media Source avoids that extra dependency.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Create a stream or open one that is already scheduled.
- In the Live Control Room, copy the stream server URL and stream key. In OBS, open the stream settings and enter those values. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe the connection workflow.
- Treat the stream key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your event. If it is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room using YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
- Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the YouTube preview to appear and check it before selecting Go live in YouTube. Starting the encoder sends its feed; the YouTube event does not begin publicly until you start it in the Live Control Room.
Choose settings the PC and connection can sustain
For a standard SDR sermon stream using H.264 over RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its encoder settings table lists 5 Mbps as the recommended H.264 video bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps. Treat that as YouTube’s reference setting, not a guarantee that an older PC or a particular internet connection can sustain it. Choose output quality based on actual encoding performance and a reliable upload connection. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and selecting settings suited to that connection.
RTMPS is YouTube’s preferred encrypted ingestion option when available for the workflow. HLS is a different ingest workflow with different codec support and higher latency; it is not needed for this ordinary sermon-loop setup. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance for its supported settings and table.
Test before the service and keep the stream running
- Schedule or create a private or unlisted test event, and use the same PC, connection, recording, audio and output settings planned for the service.
- Start OBS early enough to let YouTube receive the feed. Check the Live Control Room preview, stream health and audio. Listen for the beginning and end of the file, then observe whether the loop restarts as expected.
- During the service, monitor the preview and audio, and keep an eye on stream health. YouTube recommends testing ahead of time and monitoring the stream; see its live-streaming tips.
- At the end, end the event in YouTube and stop streaming in OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat that as a substitute for checking the event’s archive and visibility settings.
Prevent Windows from interrupting the broadcast
Review Windows power and sleep settings before a long stream. In Windows 11, look under Settings → System → Power & battery → Screen and sleep; on Windows 10, the corresponding controls are generally under Settings → System → Power & sleep. Names and locations can vary by Windows version and device. On a laptop, check what happens when the lid closes; setting the screen to turn off is not the same as allowing the PC to sleep. Microsoft’s Windows power guidance and system power-state documentation explain the relevant behavior.

Troubleshooting common sermon-loop problems
The YouTube preview does not appear
- Confirm OBS is streaming and that its stream settings contain the server URL and current key for the correct event.
- Check that live streaming is enabled for the channel and that the event is open in the Live Control Room. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- If the key may have been exposed or is stale, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
The recording stops instead of repeating
- Open the Media Source properties and verify Loop is enabled for the selected file.
- If using a playlist, verify it is a VLC Video source with loop playlist enabled, and that the required VLC installation matches OBS’s 32-bit or 64-bit version.
The stream buffers, drops frames or becomes unstable
- Test upload capacity and choose a lower resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the selected output reliably. Do not assume the 1080p reference bitrate is suitable for every connection.
- Check OBS’s performance on the actual spare PC. OBS’s minimum system requirements are not a performance guarantee; reduce output demands if encoding cannot keep up.
- Check whether the PC has gone to sleep, lost power or lost network connectivity. If wired Ethernet is available and addresses a real connection issue, it may be worth trying, but it cannot guarantee a stable stream.
The picture or audio is wrong
- Check framing and audio by playing the source in OBS before the event, then verify both in YouTube’s preview.
- Review the source file and OBS audio levels if sound is missing, too loud or out of sync; make corrections in a test event rather than during the service.
Or let it run in the cloud
If keeping a spare PC awake and connected is inconvenient, StreamNeo runs an uploaded recording or playlist as a YouTube Live stream from the cloud. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only.
