To use dialogue-only subtitles on Netflix, start a title, open Audio & Subtitles, and choose the subtitle language listed without CC or SDH—for example, English rather than English (CC). That plain-language track generally shows spoken dialogue without sound-effect and music descriptions. It is not available for every title, episode, language, or device.
Dialogue-only subtitles vs. CC and SDH
Dialogue-only subtitles focus on spoken words. A fuller closed-caption or SDH (subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing) track can also identify speakers and describe sounds, music, or vocal delivery. For example, a CC/SDH track might include [phone ringing], [ominous music], or [whispers]. What appears varies by title and track.

These labels and conventions are not identical on every service, device, or title. Netflix describes subtitles as dialogue rendered as text and closed captions as including descriptions of sounds. - Start the movie or episode.
- Open the playback controls. On a phone, tablet, or computer, tap or click the video. On most TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, Blu-ray players, and cable boxes, press the up or down button on the remote. On Apple TV, swipe up or press the up button.
- Select Audio & Subtitles, or the language controls shown on screen.
- Under Subtitles, select the plain language option—for example, English rather than English (CC) or English (SDH).
- Check Audio separately and choose the audio language you actually want.
Netflix’s playback instructions cover the controls by device. The plain language label usually indicates dialogue-only subtitles, but names can vary. If the only option is marked CC or SDH, the title may not have a separate dialogue-only track.

Why choose the dialogue-only track?
Fewer on-screen labels can mean less visual clutter, particularly when you are following faces, action, or text in another language. Dialogue-only subtitles can also help when the room is noisy, you need to keep the volume low, or the mix makes quiet speech difficult to catch. Language learners may prefer reading the spoken lines while listening to the original performance, rather than having every audible event captioned.
Netflix announced the format on April 24, 2025, initially with You Season 5. It said it planned to add dialogue-only subtitle tracks to new Netflix originals in the languages it offers, alongside SDH/CC tracks. That rollout announcement is not a guarantee that every Netflix title now has both choices. Netflix’s announcement describes the option and its intended rollout.

When CC or SDH is the better choice
Dialogue-only subtitles intentionally leave out some audio information. That can matter to a story: a knock may come before a character appears, a lyric may carry a clue, or an off-screen voice may be hard to identify from dialogue alone. Music, silence, laughter, crying, and a change in vocal delivery can all contribute meaning.

Dialogue-only subtitles are not a replacement for accessibility captions: they address readability and clutter, while fuller captions convey more of the audible experience. In a mystery, thriller, horror film, or documentary where sound cues matter, consider using CC/SDH or switching tracks when needed.

Check audio and subtitle languages separately
Choosing English under subtitles does not mean the audio is in English. You can pair original-language audio with English subtitles, an English dub with English subtitles, or original audio with English CC. For foreign-language viewing or language study, check both fields so the dub is not selected by accident. Subtitle tracks can be prepared for different audio versions, so wording and timing may not always match the track you expect.
If the plain-language option is missing
A missing dialogue-only choice does not necessarily mean the app is broken. Language availability can depend on the title, season or episode, country, profile settings, device, and licensing. Some older or licensed titles may offer only one track; available tracks can differ between episodes.

- Check another episode or season. Language assets may not be identical throughout a series.
- Look for another label. A local-language accessibility label may differ from “CC” or “SDH.” If only a CC/SDH option appears, there may be no separate dialogue-only track.
- Check while streaming. A download may show only the two most relevant subtitle or audio languages. Netflix says to delete the download and check the title over Wi-Fi to see more choices.
- Confirm the profile and audio settings. Profile language preferences and the selected audio track can affect what you see and how useful the subtitles are.
- Try the title on another supported device. The player layout and visible controls vary; this can help distinguish a display issue from a track that is not offered.

Other common issues
Subtitles appear even though you turned them off: Netflix may show translation for dialogue in a language different from the title’s original language. This can be title-specific forced translation rather than your regular subtitle selection. See Netflix’s subtitle help.

The selected track omits a sound you need: That is generally expected for dialogue-only subtitles. Switch to CC/SDH for sound effects, music cues, speaker labels, or other non-dialogue information.
Your preference does not stick: Check that you are using the intended profile and that the next title offers the same track. Netflix says subtitle and audio preferences are not saved for most Kids titles watched from an adult profile, but are saved when watching from a Kids profile. Its suggested workaround for a preference that will not save is to play a title rated Teens or above for two to three minutes. Details are in the Netflix help page.
Make subtitles easier to read
If the words are hard to see, Netflix offers appearance settings such as font, text size, shadow, and background presentation. The available controls depend on the device; Netflix also documents device-specific options for phones, tablets, and TVs in its subtitle and caption guidance.
