Apple Music collaborative playlists let multiple people build one playlist together. After joining, collaborators can add, remove, and reorder songs, and react to tracks with emoji. The feature requires an Apple Music subscription and is available in the Apple Music apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Android, subject to software, age, and regional availability.
For the quickest setup, open a playlist, select the Collaboration button, choose whether to approve participants, tap Start Collaborating, and send the invitation.

What is an Apple Music collaborative playlist?
A collaborative playlist is an editable shared playlist—not just a playlist link that lets someone listen. People who successfully join can add music, remove songs, change the order, and react to tracks with emoji.

That makes it useful for road trips, family playlists, parties, weddings, classrooms, and other groups. It also means collaborators can make direct changes: Apple Music does not document an add-only, voting-only, or per-person permission system for these playlists.

What you need before starting
- An Apple Music subscription.
- An updated iPhone, iPad, or Mac, or the latest available Apple Music app on Android.
- Apple Music availability in your country or region.
- Eligibility under Apple’s age rules: children under 13 cannot collaborate. Apple says approval is enabled by default for users aged 13–17.
Family-plan membership does not automatically guarantee that every family member can collaborate; the subscription and age requirements still apply. Catalog availability can also vary by market, so a song available to one participant may not be playable for another.
How to create a collaborative playlist
iPhone and iPad
- Open Apple Music.
- Create a playlist or open an existing playlist.
- Tap the Collaboration button at the top.
- Choose whether to enable Approve Collaborators.
- Tap Start Collaborating.
- Choose Messages, Mail, AirDrop, or another available sharing method, then send the invitation.
You can start collaboration from an existing playlist; a special playlist type does not need to be created first. For an important, carefully ordered playlist, consider duplicating it before inviting a large group. Apple’s documentation does not promise version history or an undo log for collaborative changes.
Mac
- Open the Music app.
- Select a playlist in the sidebar.
- Click the Collaboration Management button.
- Turn on Approve Collaborators if you want to review join requests.
- Click Start Collaborating.
- Choose Messages, Mail, AirDrop, or another sharing method, add recipients if needed, and click Done.
A collaborative playlist displays a collaboration icon beside its name. See Apple’s Mac Music guide for the current interface.
Android
- Open the current Apple Music app.
- Create a playlist or open an existing one.
- Tap the Collaboration button.
- Configure Approve Collaborators.
- Tap Start Collaborating.
- Send the invitation.
Apple supports the feature on Android, but button placement can differ by app version. Update the app if the collaboration control is unavailable.

How to invite people
You can send an invitation through Messages, email, AirDrop, or another sharing option provided by your device. After collaboration has started, iPhone and iPad users can generally open the playlist’s collaboration controls and choose Share Invite Link. Apple’s current iPhone guide also supports generating a QR Code for nearby participants. Mac users can share an invite link from the Collaboration Management window.
Treat the invitation link as sensitive. If approval is disabled, anyone who receives the link may be able to join and edit the playlist—and Apple warns that collaborators can share the link.
Should you turn on Approve Collaborators?

For a wedding, party, school, workplace, or public event, leave approval enabled unless you are certain the link will stay within a trusted group. Disabling approval does not make the playlist read-only.
How someone joins your playlist
- Open the invitation link in Apple Music.
- Tap or click Join Playlist.
- If approval is required, choose Request to Join instead.
- Wait for the owner to approve the request.
- Reopen the playlist in Apple Music after approval.
Opening the link alone does not necessarily make someone an active collaborator. On Mac, Apple may label the controls Join and Request to Join. The iPhone joining guide explains the recipient flow.
How collaborators edit the playlist
iPhone, iPad, and Android
- Open the collaborative playlist.
- Tap the More button, then tap Edit.
- To add music, tap Add Music, search, and tap the add control.
- To remove a song, tap its remove control and then tap Delete.
- To reorder songs, drag the reorder control beside a song up or down.
Mac
Use the normal playlist controls to add items. To reorder songs, choose View > Sort By > Playlist Order, then drag tracks. To remove a selected item, press the Delete key.

These are direct edits, not suggestions for the owner. Before opening an important playlist, keep a duplicate because Apple’s cited guides do not document a collaborative revision history or guaranteed recovery tool.
How to react to songs with emoji
- Open the collaborative playlist and play a song.
- Tap the currently playing song at the bottom.
- In Now Playing, tap the Reactions button.
- Choose an emoji.
Mac also supports reactions, although the exact desktop control path may vary with the current Music app interface.
How to manage collaborators
The playlist owner can approve or decline pending requests, invite more people, change the approval setting, remove individual collaborators, and stop collaboration entirely.
On iPhone or iPad, open the playlist’s collaboration controls, find a person’s name, swipe left, and tap Remove. On Mac, use the Collaboration Management dialog to review requests, remove participants, or change access settings. The documentation does not describe granular permissions such as “can add but cannot delete.”
How to leave or stop collaboration
These controls have different effects:
- Leave: An individual collaborator removes themselves from the playlist’s collaboration.
- Stop: The owner ends collaborative editing for the playlist.
Open the playlist’s Collaboration controls and choose Leave if you are a participant, or Stop if you own the playlist.

Why collaborative playlists are not working
“I don’t see the Collaboration button.”
- Confirm you are using Apple Music, not another music app.
- Check that you have an Apple Music subscription.
- Update iOS, iPadOS, macOS, or the Android Apple Music app.
- Confirm Apple Music is available in your region.
- Try an Apple Music-created playlist rather than one imported or generated by another service.
- Close and reopen the app, then sign in again if necessary.
Apple specifically directs users to update their device or Android app. Interface and eligibility rules can change, so consult Apple’s current support article if the control remains missing.
“The invitation opens, but I cannot join.”
Make sure the recipient taps Join Playlist. If approval is enabled, they must tap Request to Join and wait for the owner. Other possibilities include an Apple Music subscription mismatch, an outdated app, the wrong Apple Account, an incomplete or stale link, or collaboration having been stopped.
“I joined, but I cannot edit.”
Listening access is not the same as collaborator access. The user may not have completed the join flow, or approval may still be pending. Confirm approval, update the app, and reopen the playlist.
“Someone changed or deleted songs.”
The owner can remove that collaborator or stop collaboration. Apple’s cited documentation does not promise per-song locking, an undo log, or revision history, so a duplicate playlist is the safest precaution for valuable collections.
Collaborative playlists versus other Apple Music features
Use ordinary playlist sharing when people only need to listen. Use a collaborative playlist when the group needs to build and edit a shared collection over time. Use SharePlay when the goal is synchronized listening during a supported session, such as a FaceTime call or compatible in-car experience. SharePlay does not replace a persistent editable playlist.

Do you need Apple Music?
For this feature, Apple says an Apple Music subscription is required. Apple’s US page displayed Individual at $11.99 per month and Family at $19.99 per month after promotional periods when checked on August 18, 2026; prices, taxes, offers, billing channels, and regional availability can differ. If most of the group already uses Spotify, switching services may be simpler. Spotify offers group-listening tools such as Jam, but those should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a persistent editable playlist. TIDAL is another streaming alternative, but it will not solve an Apple Music-specific collaboration requirement without moving the group to another service.

Can Android users join an Apple Music collaborative playlist?
Yes. Apple’s current support documentation includes Android, provided the app is updated and the participant meets the subscription and eligibility requirements.

Apple does not document granular roles such as add-only or read-only collaborators within a collaborative playlist. Use ordinary playlist sharing when editing access is not wanted.
Can I recover songs someone removed?
Apple’s cited guides do not document version history or guaranteed recovery. Keep a duplicate of an important playlist before collaboration.
