ChatGPT can help plan and sequence a marathon playlist around your taste, target finish time and race strategy. It cannot guarantee that every track, version or BPM is correct, so the reliable approach is to give it a detailed brief, verify the songs in your music service and test the playlist on a long run.

What ChatGPT can—and cannot—do

ChatGPT is most useful as a playlist planner: it can suggest music, organize tracks by race phase, apply exclusions and revise the energy curve through conversation. With Spotify connected, it may also recommend music and create or edit playlists through chat. Spotify describes the integration at Spotify in ChatGPT and its Spotify ChatGPT app page; availability and capabilities can vary by account, region and rollout.

Neither a generated list nor an integration guarantees correct artist credits, the intended recording, local catalog availability or accurate BPM. Treat suggestions as candidates, then confirm them in the service you will use. ChatGPT does not universally create and save Apple Music playlists natively; for Apple Music, use its output as a track list and add verified songs yourself.

Plan for the race duration, not a generic workout

A marathon playlist has to last for hours and support different phases of effort. Estimate the duration first:

SHOKZ OpenRun Pro 2 Bone Conduction Bluetooth Sport Headphones, Black
  • Unparalleled Audio and Premium sound - Dual drivers combine the clear highs of Bone Conduction Tech with the deep bass of Air Conduction Tech for 12 hours of powerful, 3D audio.Perfect for musical motivation during workouts and runs.
  • Open-Ear Awareness - SHOKZ's signature open-ear design helps you power through your workouts while keeping you safely aware of your surroundings. Leak-free listening ensures your audio remains for your ears only
  • Secure Stable, Lightweight Fit - The weight-optimized design of this unibody frame integrates a Ni-Ti alloy memory wire and ergonomic ear hooks. The result is a secure, comfortable fit that defies slips and shift even during gym sessions or cycling.
  • Dedicated EQ Modes - Customize your audio experience with our dedicated EQ modes on the Shokz App. Enjoy pure bone conduction sound with the newly launched Classic Mode, or boost your audio in noisy environments with Volume Boost Mode.
  • Crystal-Clear Calls - Strategically positioned dual wind-resistant microphones and an AI noise reduction algorithm filter out 96.5% of background noise, including wind at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour.
  • In miles: 26.2 × expected minutes per mile.
  • In kilometers: 42.195 × expected minutes per kilometer.

For a four-hour target, that is 240 minutes. Add a buffer for a crowded start, stops, pace variation or playback interruptions. With a 20-minute buffer, the target becomes about 260 minutes; at an average of four minutes per track, that is roughly 65 songs. These are planning estimates, not a universal buffer rule—choose one that suits your race and how continuously you intend to listen.

A marathon mix should also account for pacing discipline, mental fatigue, aid stations and race announcements. Familiar songs can be especially useful late, while an opening packed with high-energy tracks may tempt some runners to start too hard. Some runners prefer music throughout; others build in silence or spoken audio.

Give ChatGPT a useful runner profile

“Make an upbeat running playlist” leaves too many important choices open. Include the details that shape selection and sequencing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Expected finish time, pace range and race distance.
  • Target cadence, if relevant, and whether you hear a beat in half-time or double-time.
  • Favorite genres, artists and songs; artists, genres or lyrical themes to avoid.
  • Clean or explicit lyrics, and the balance of familiar favorites to new discoveries.
  • Music service and country, since catalog availability varies.
  • Whether energy should stay steady or build, and which sections should feel most motivating.
  • Whether you want continuous music, blocks of music or room for silence.
  • Playback device and any race restrictions on headphones or audio devices.

Copy-and-paste prompt for a marathon playlist

Build a marathon playlist for me using this profile:
- Expected finish time: [hours and minutes]
- Expected pace: [pace]
- Race distance: 26.2 miles / 42.195 km
- Comfortable race cadence, if useful: [steps per minute]
- Music service and country: [service, country]
- Explicit lyrics: [allowed / not allowed]
- Favorite genres, artists and songs: [list]
- Exclude: [artists, genres, themes]
- Familiar songs versus discoveries: [preferred balance]
- Energy curve: [steady / gradual build / peak late]

Plan enough music for my expected finish time plus a 20-minute buffer. Organize it into:
1. Miles 0–3
2. Miles 3–10
3. Miles 10–16
4. Miles 16–20
5. Miles 20–24
6. Miles 24–26.2

For every track, list title, artist, album, approximate duration, approximate BPM if known, race segment and why it fits. Prefer officially released studio versions. Do not invent songs, titles, remixes or credits. Mark anything uncertain VERIFY. Keep the opening controlled and reserve the strongest motivational tracks for later miles.

For a four-hour target, replace the sample 20-minute buffer if needed. Asking the model to mark uncertainty makes checking easier, but does not itself verify a track.

Sequence by race phase

Use the race’s changing demands to guide the order rather than sorting only by genre. This is a planning framework, not a physiological prescription; adjust it to your preferences and race plan.

Race phase Purpose Selection approach
Pre-start and warm-up Focus without over-revving Choose calm, positive, familiar tracks.
Miles 0–3 Support restraint Start with moderate energy rather than your biggest anthems.
Miles 3–10 Settle into rhythm Use steady tracks that suit your comfortable effort.
Miles 10–16 Maintain focus Mix dependable favorites with selected discoveries.
Miles 16–20 Respond to fatigue Bring in recognizable songs and stronger choruses.
Miles 20–24 Provide personal encouragement Save emotionally meaningful tracks or personal anthems.
Miles 24–26.2 Support the finish Use your most dependable favorites and a celebratory closer.

The last miles may matter more to your choices than the opening ones: save songs you know reliably lift your mood instead of spending all your obvious favorites early. If motivational anthems do not work for you, a steady groove, quieter music or planned silence may fit better.

Use BPM and cadence as clues, not commands

ChatGPT can use a target cadence as a selection constraint, but a song’s beats per minute (BPM) are only a rough proxy for how it feels while running. A 170 BPM track may suit a runner near 170 steps per minute, but some listeners naturally interpret the beat at half or double time. Tempo databases can disagree, and live recordings or songs with tempo changes may not behave like a steady studio track.

Energy is not just BPM: familiarity, groove, lyrics and personal response matter too. Ask for an approximate tempo range if useful, then test candidate tracks at your natural stride. Do not force your cadence to match a song; your training plan, perceived effort and race strategy take priority.

My comfortable cadence is approximately 174 steps per minute. Use tempo as a flexible guide, not a prescription. Favor tracks around [range] BPM, while allowing strong half-time or double-time feels when appropriate. Keep the opening controlled, make the middle steady, and reserve familiar, emotionally motivating songs for after mile 18. Label BPM as approximate and flag disputed or variable tempos. Avoid abrupt energy jumps.

Choose a creation workflow

Workflow Best suited to What to account for
Spotify in ChatGPT Spotify users who want conversational recommendations and playlist interaction. Connect Spotify when prompted; features and access vary. Verify the resulting tracks and order.
Spotify Prompted Playlist Premium mobile users who want natural-language playlist generation inside Spotify. Spotify documents this as an English-only beta with usage limits; its behavior may change. It may offer less control over race duration and mile-by-mile sequencing.
Plain ChatGPT and manual creation People who want detailed planning or use Apple Music and other services. Use a title-and-artist list, then search, verify and add tracks yourself.
Dedicated running playlist service Runners whose main need is pace, cadence or distance mapping. Check service compatibility, export, offline playback, pricing and privacy before relying on it.
Spreadsheet Runners who want a transparent, auditable selection process. It takes more work, but makes duration, duplicates and race-phase assignments easy to inspect.

Connect Spotify to ChatGPT

  1. Log in to ChatGPT and mention Spotify in a conversation, or open the Spotify app page.
  2. Connect your Spotify account when prompted, after reviewing the app’s permissions and relevant privacy settings.
  3. Request a race-specific playlist with your expected duration, music preferences and energy curve.
  4. Refine the result in chat, then open it in Spotify to review and edit it.

Spotify describes its ChatGPT experience as able to use listening history for recommendations and to create, edit and name playlists, but that should not be read as a guarantee that every request will use all listening history or work identically for every account. See Spotify’s announcement for its description of the integration. Spotify also says its AI experiences are developing and may not satisfy every request; check its AI-playlist warning when evaluating generated selections.

Example request: “Spotify, create a marathon playlist for a four-hour race. Start controlled, keep the middle steady, and reserve the most motivating songs for miles 20–26. Use my listening history, avoid explicit lyrics, and include at least 20 minutes of extra music.” Refine it by describing what feels wrong, such as an overly aggressive first hour or too many unfamiliar tracks.

Try Spotify’s own Prompted Playlist

This is a separate Spotify feature, not the Spotify-in-ChatGPT integration. Spotify’s Prompted Playlists support page documents the following path for the beta:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Spotify mobile, open Your Library.
  2. Tap Create, then choose Prompted Playlist.
  3. Describe the scenario, mood or sound you want.
  4. Choose whether the playlist should refresh daily or weekly, then tap Generate playlist.

Spotify documents the feature for Premium mobile users and says it is English-only, has usage limits and may change. It can help generate music, but a marathon plan may still need you to check duration, sequence race phases and reserve tracks for late miles.

Verify the playlist before relying on it

Generated suggestions can include plausible but inaccurate titles, misattributed artists, duplicates or the wrong version. A track may be missing in your country or appear as a live recording, remix, clean edit or shortened version. Confirm each item directly in the chosen service.

Check What to confirm
Identity The exact song title and artist credit match the intended track.
Recording It is the intended studio, live, acoustic, clean or remix version.
Availability The track is playable in your country on your chosen service.
Lyrics The version matches your explicit-content preference.
Duration and duplicates Remove accidental repeats and ensure the total time covers your plan.
Tempo and fit Treat BPM as approximate and decide whether the song feels comfortable at your running stride.
Race placement Check that high-energy songs have not crowded the opening and that late-race favorites are in the intended section.

To audit a draft, ask: “Check this list for likely duplicate tracks, questionable artist credits, live versions or remixes, clean/explicit mismatches, and songs that should be manually verified in [service] in [country]. Estimate whether the total duration covers [finish time] plus [buffer], and flag any energy that rises too early. Do not claim a track is verified unless it has actually been checked in the service.”

Test the playlist on a long training run

A playlist that looks good on screen may feel wrong after hours of running. Test the sequence with the device and headphones you plan to use, and revise it based on what happens at your actual effort:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Does the opening tempt you to run faster than planned?
  • Do transitions feel smooth, or are the energy jumps distracting?
  • Are there enough familiar tracks late in the run?
  • Does the mix become repetitive, or are new songs distracting?
  • Do the headphones, phone or watch connection work reliably?
  • Does the total length cover the run with your chosen buffer?

Prepare for playback problems

Network coverage can be unreliable on course, so download the playlist for offline use if your service and device allow it. Test that download by playing tracks without a connection. Before race day, check the device and headphone setup, charge the battery, consider disabling unnecessary battery-draining features, and confirm how calls or notifications affect playback. Race headphone rules vary; check the event’s instructions.

Keep a short emergency playlist on the same device and make a separate five-song finish section if you want a simple fallback. Run with the full setup at least once during a long training session. If the connected Spotify workflow fails or is unavailable, a ChatGPT-generated title-and-artist table can still be built manually.

Make revisions without starting over

Once you have a draft, give ChatGPT specific feedback tied to the race rather than asking it to make the playlist “better.” For example:

The first hour feels too intense, and the section after mile 18 repeats too many artists. Keep my favorite artists, make the opening more controlled, add variety late, and mark every track whose title, version, availability or BPM I should verify. Create a separate 30-minute emergency section.

For manual tracking, a spreadsheet can include title, artist, duration, BPM, genre, familiarity, energy and race phase. A dedicated service such as PersonalBeats markets pace- and distance-oriented playlist building and says it accepts music links from Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube; check its current compatibility, export options and terms before depending on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Not every runner needs continuous music. Podcasts, audiobooks, guided-run audio, silence or alternating music and silence may suit some parts of the race better. The playlist’s job is to support your own race plan, not dictate your stride.
