The route is: home library → VPS-accessible media → FFmpeg on the VPS → YouTube Live ingest → viewers. This guide explains the setup and the choices that matter; no particular VPS provider or end-to-end deployment has been verified.
Choose how the VPS will access your video library
FFmpeg on the VPS needs ongoing access to the source files. Choose the arrangement before configuring the stream:
- Copy the library or selected videos to VPS storage. This makes the files locally available to FFmpeg, but requires enough persistent disk space and an initial transfer.
- Synchronize selected files. Keep a chosen subset on the VPS and update it as needed. Plan for the storage and transfer required by that subset.
- Keep files at home and have the VPS retrieve them. This avoids storing the full library on the server, but makes playback dependent on the home connection, its upload capacity, and its availability. The available documentation does not quantify those requirements.
Whichever method you use, restrict access to the VPS and media with authentication and access controls; do not expose files or services publicly without protection. Confirm you have the rights to stream each recording and that it complies with YouTube’s current policies.

- Support, expected availability, acceptable-use terms, and the total price.
Do not treat a VPS plan’s advertised network or CPU specifications as proof that it can sustain your particular stream. Confirm that the provider permits the intended traffic pattern, then test your actual source and configuration.
Prepare YouTube Live and choose an ingest protocol
YouTube documents RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH as ingest options. For a conventional FFmpeg push, RTMPS is a sensible first option to investigate: YouTube recommends it, and it carries RTMP over an SSL connection. YouTube’s documented RTMPS connection uses port 443 and requires the correct protocol, ingestion endpoint, application path, and stream key. See YouTube’s encoder settings and RTMPS ingestion documentation.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
HLS and DASH are also documented, but have protocol-specific requirements. HLS uses playlists and media segments, and YouTube says HLS ingestion usually has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingestion. Consult YouTube’s ingestion protocol overview and HLS ingestion documentation before choosing either instead of RTMPS.
In YouTube Studio, create or configure a live stream and obtain its ingest details and stream key. Keep the key private: it is a publishing credential. Avoid putting it in public logs, screenshots, repositories, or shared command history. Use the current endpoint and key shown for your stream rather than assuming a server path from an example.

Install and check FFmpeg on the VPS
Install FFmpeg using the operating system’s package manager or another trusted distribution method, then check that the installed build can handle your input and the protocol you intend to use. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation documents RTMP support and URL syntax, but does not guarantee that every packaged build has the TLS support needed for RTMPS or that a command will work with every file and account.
Before building a long-running stream, inspect the source files’ codecs, resolution, frame rate, and audio format. Decide whether FFmpeg can pass through compatible streams or must encode them. Encoding consumes VPS CPU; passing through avoids that encoding workload but still requires a compatible source and a working ingest path. Test the complete configuration rather than assuming compatibility from the file extension.

Set encoder parameters to YouTube’s current guidance
YouTube’s encoder settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 frames per second, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. Its recommended bitrates vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, the page recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not minimums, VPS guarantees, or performance measurements.
| Setting | YouTube guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 | Confirm the selected codec is supported by your FFmpeg build and configuration. |
| Bitrate | Varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; H.264 1080p30: 10 Mbps; H.264 1080p60: 12 Mbps | Consult the current YouTube table for your exact output combination; do not infer VPS capacity from the recommendation. |
| Rate control | Constant bitrate | Use a constant-bitrate configuration when encoding. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps | Match the intended output and source where practical. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | Set and verify the interval in the output stream. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 | Check that audio is present, audible, and in a supported format. |
Recommendations may change. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings when you configure the stream rather than relying on an old bitrate table.

Build the FFmpeg push and test it before scheduling a stream
The exact command depends on the media, whether you are encoding or passing through, and the endpoint and key YouTube supplies. FFmpeg’s RTMP URL syntax is documented, but there is no single verified command for every VPS, build, source file, or YouTube account. Construct the output using the RTMPS endpoint and application path supplied for your stream, and handle the key as a secret rather than publishing it in a reusable example.
- Start with a representative source. Choose a file that reflects the real stream’s video, audio, and movement. Confirm the VPS can read it reliably.
- Configure the output. Select a supported video and audio codec, constant bitrate when encoding, the bitrate appropriate to the output resolution and frame rate, and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds.
- Connect to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest. Use the valid endpoint, path, and key for the live stream, and ensure the connection uses RTMPS on port 443.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Check YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages, confirm picture and sound, and let the stream run long enough to reveal issues in your own configuration. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion; no universal test duration is specified.
- Review server and stream behavior. Look for FFmpeg errors, interruptions in source access, and whether the VPS sustains the configured output. Fix problems and repeat the test before relying on the stream.
- Schedule or start the intended live stream. Keep monitoring stream health and messages during the event, as YouTube advises.
Plan playback, scheduling, and continuity
A continuous or scheduled broadcast needs more than a successful initial connection: the VPS must keep reading the media and sending output for the intended duration. Decide whether FFmpeg should play one file, repeat it, or move through a prepared sequence, and test the transitions with your actual files. The documentation cited here does not establish a universal playlist command or a tested restart configuration, so validate the behavior of your FFmpeg build and input arrangement.
If the media remains at home, any interruption to the home system or its connection can interrupt access from the VPS. If it is stored on the VPS, plan for persistent storage and confirm the provider’s terms for sustained outbound traffic. In either arrangement, monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages and your server process rather than assuming a successful start guarantees uninterrupted delivery.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong protocol, endpoint, application path, key, or port; RTMPS/TLS support missing from the installed FFmpeg build. | Recheck the ingest details in YouTube Studio, verify the build and RTMPS connection on port 443, and test again. |
| Connection works, but YouTube reports stream-health problems | Codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, or audio settings do not match current guidance; unstable source access or VPS output. | Compare the actual output with YouTube’s current encoder settings and inspect FFmpeg errors and server behavior. |
| Video plays without sound, or sound is missing | Source has no usable audio, FFmpeg is not mapping the intended audio, or the output codec is unsupported or incorrectly configured. | Inspect the input streams and output configuration; test with a file whose audio you can verify. |
| Stream stops when reading a home-hosted file | The VPS can no longer retrieve the source, or the home connection or system is unavailable. | Restore source access or use media stored on VPS-accessible persistent storage; test the chosen architecture under realistic conditions. |
| VPS cannot sustain the configured stream | Encoding load, outbound transfer limits, provider restrictions, or network conditions. | Check CPU and provider terms, test the intended output, and adjust the encoding approach or plan only after confirming the constraint. |
