“Apple TV” may mean the Apple TV subscription, the Apple TV app, or the Apple TV 4K streaming device. This guide covers all three, with the subscription as the main focus.

- the Apple TV subscription;
- eligible movie and TV-show purchases;
- eligible movie rentals; and
- other Apple services and purchases covered by Apple’s account-balance rules.
The Apple TV subscription does not automatically include every movie or show available to rent or buy in the app. It also does not automatically include separately billed third-party channels. Availability varies by country, region, device and billing arrangement. See Apple’s current Apple Account balance guidance and Apple TV app overview.
An Apple TV 4K is hardware, not a requirement. You can use the subscription on compatible smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, phones, tablets, computers and the web. Apple’s Apple TV 4K product page is relevant only if you want a dedicated streaming device.
What you need before redeeming the card
- An Apple Account.
- The card’s 16-digit code.
- An Apple TV subscription or eligible Apple TV app purchase in mind.
- The same Apple Account signed in on the device where you watch.
- A card purchased for the same country or region as your Apple Account storefront.
- A valid payment method on file, if Apple requests one.
Apple Gift Cards are region-specific and generally cannot be redeemed outside the country or region where they were purchased. Do not change your Apple Account region casually to work around a mismatch; doing so can affect subscriptions, payment methods and available content. See Apple’s gift-card redemption troubleshooting.
Redeem the Apple Gift Card
iPhone or iPad
- Find the 16-digit code on the back of the card. Scratch or peel the label carefully if needed.
- Open the App Store.
- Tap the sign-in button, initials or profile photo at the top.
- Tap Redeem Gift Card or Code.
- Choose Use Camera, or select Enter Code Manually if scanning fails.
- Enter the code and tap Redeem.
Check that the Apple Account balance increased before starting the Apple TV subscription. Apple’s labels can vary slightly by software version, but the current path begins in the App Store. Full instructions are available from Apple Support.
Optional Wallet method
If an Apple Account card is available in Apple Wallet, open Wallet, tap the Apple Account card, tap the More button, choose Redeem, then scan or enter the code. This option is not available to every user or region. Apple documents the Wallet-related options at Apple Account balance support.
Mac
- Open the App Store.
- Click your name or the sign-in button in the sidebar.
- Click Redeem Gift Card.
- Sign in if prompted.
- Scan the card or enter its code manually.
- Complete redemption and check the balance.
Windows PC
- Open the Apple Music app or Apple TV app.
- Click your name at the bottom of the sidebar.
- Choose Redeem.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used for Apple TV.
- Enter or scan the code and complete redemption.

Subscribe to Apple TV with the balance
- Open the Apple TV app on a compatible device, or visit tv.apple.com.
- Select the Apple TV section.
- Choose Sign In, Sign Up, Get Apple TV or Start Free Trial, depending on what your account displays.
- Sign in with the Apple Account that received the gift-card credit.
- Confirm billing details.
- Add or confirm a valid payment method if Apple requires one.
- Review and confirm the subscription.
The Apple Account balance is handled through Apple’s billing system. It is not normally entered as a separate coupon or gift-card code inside Apple TV. Apple’s subscription setup instructions are at Subscribe to Apple TV.
Apple confirms that account balance can generally be used for Apple TV, but the exact result can differ by country, promotional offer, account status and whether another company bills the subscription. A gift card also does not guarantee eligibility for a free trial or other promotion.
Using the balance for a movie, show or channel
In the Apple TV app, check what kind of transaction you are selecting:
- Subscription content: included under the Apple TV subscription while the subscription is active.
- Purchase: a separate movie or TV-show transaction.
- Rental: a separate, time-limited transaction.
- Third-party channel: a separate channel subscription with its own billing and terms.
Apple Account balance may cover eligible purchases and rentals, but the Apple TV subscription does not bundle all of them together. Confirm the price and payment source shown before approving a transaction.
Can you redeem the card directly on an Apple TV device?
The most reliable approach is to redeem the card on an iPhone, iPad, Mac or Windows PC first. Then sign in to the Apple TV device with the same Apple Account. Some Apple TV app platforms support viewing but not every purchase or subscription transaction.
If an Apple TV device shows an account or purchasing error, sign in at tv.apple.com or music.apple.com, complete account setup, accept the terms and conditions, and sign in again on the device. Apple describes this process at Prepare your Apple Account for purchases on Apple TV.

Do you need a credit card?
Possibly. Apple may require a credit card or another valid payment method to remain on file even when you intend to pay with Apple Account balance. Possible reasons include recurring billing, an insufficient balance, an unpaid previous purchase or requirements connected with a particular storefront or offer. Apple’s accepted-payment-method guidance is available at Apple Support.
Do not assume that adding a card means it will always be charged first. Apple says payment methods are charged in the order shown in the account, while Apple Account balance is a separate billing source. Review the checkout screen and your account’s payment settings; Apple explains payment-method management at this support page.
What happens when the balance runs out?
The gift card may cover one or more billing cycles, but the duration depends on the balance, the current regional subscription price, taxes and any promotional terms. Do not estimate the number of months from the card’s face value alone.
When the balance is depleted, the subscription may renew using another valid payment method on the account. If you do not want a later charge, check the renewal details and cancel before the next renewal date or before the balance is exhausted.

Existing subscription billed by another provider
Find out who currently bills the subscription before redeeming the card. Apple TV access may be billed directly by Apple, through Google Play, a mobile carrier, a smart-TV or streaming platform, a bundle provider, or a third-party channel in the Apple TV app. An Apple Gift Card added to your Apple Account does not automatically take over a subscription billed elsewhere. Apple notes that availability and subscription behavior vary by platform and region in its Apple TV subscription guidance.
Unpaid previous balance
An unpaid earlier purchase can block a new subscription. Apple allows users to resolve an unpaid Apple Account balance with gift-card credit. Check the balance and payment alerts, then follow Apple’s unpaid-balance instructions.

Family Sharing
Apple Account balance belongs to the account that redeemed the card. Family members cannot spend another family member’s balance. That is separate from subscription sharing: an Apple TV subscription may be shareable through Family Sharing under Apple’s current rules, but sharing the subscription does not share the underlying gift-card funds. Troubleshooting
“Redeem Gift Card or Code” is missing
Sign in to the Apple Account first and make sure you are using the App Store on iPhone, iPad or Mac, or Apple Music/Apple TV on Windows. The option can differ by interface, software version and region.

The code belongs to another country or region
The card and Apple Account storefront do not match. Apple Gift Cards cannot normally be redeemed outside the purchase region. Contact the retailer or Apple Support if you believe the card was sold incorrectly; do not switch regions merely to redeem it.
The card was already redeemed
The credit may already be attached to an account. Sign out of the App Store or iTunes Store on affected devices, sign back in, then check the Apple Account balance and purchase history. Confirm that Apple TV uses that same account. Apple includes this remedy in its redemption-error guidance.
The card has not been activated
This is usually a retailer activation issue. Keep the receipt and return to the retailer rather than repeatedly attempting redemption.
The camera cannot read the code
Choose Enter Code Manually. Check characters that can look alike, including 0/O, 2/Z, 3/E, 5/S, 6/G and 8/B.

- Confirm the card was redeemed to the intended Apple Account.
- Check that the balance increased.
- Verify the card and account use the same country or region.
- Add or update a valid payment method if prompted.
- Resolve any unpaid prior balance.
- Complete account setup and accept Apple’s terms at tv.apple.com or music.apple.com.
- Try subscribing from another supported device or the web.
- Contact Apple Support if the balance is visible but unavailable at checkout.
