Sometimes—but not universally. You can pause Peacock on-demand movies and shows, while some live events may offer pause or rewind controls. However, Peacock’s local NBC live channel cannot be paused, fast-forwarded, or rewound. The answer also changes if you access Peacock through YouTube Primetime Channels rather than the standalone Peacock app.
The short answer
| What you’re watching | Can you pause it? |
|---|---|
| On-demand movie or show | Generally yes |
| Local NBC live channel in Peacock | No |
| Other Peacock live sports and events | Varies by event, device, and rights restrictions |
| Peacock through YouTube Primetime Channels | Yes for live events or matches, according to YouTube’s launch announcement |
| Personal DVR recording in the standalone Peacock app | Not established as a universal feature |
Peacock does not provide one universal live-TV DVR experience. “Live TV” may mean a sports event, a one-time broadcast, a 24/7 Peacock Channel, a local NBC stream, or Peacock purchased through another platform. Those streams can have different playback controls.
When Peacock lets you pause
On-demand movies and shows
On-demand content works like ordinary streaming playback. Start a movie or episode, press the remote’s Pause/Play button, or select the pause control on screen, then press Play to continue.
This is not the same as pausing live television. An on-demand title is already available as a stored playback asset, whereas a live stream may restrict time-shifting. Pausing also does not create a permanent recording or guarantee that Peacock will preserve your exact position indefinitely.

Some live sports and events
Some Peacock live events may provide pause, rewind, restart, or “watch from beginning” controls. Others may play continuously without them. Rights agreements, the specific event, the app version, and the playback device can all affect what appears on screen.
There is no reliable basis for promising that every live sporting event in the standalone Peacock app can be paused. Open the event and check for a timeline or pause icon rather than assuming that your subscription tier guarantees the feature.
When Peacock does not let you pause
The local NBC live channel
You cannot pause Peacock’s local NBC live channel. Peacock’s official help page says this feed cannot be paused, fast-forwarded, or rewound: Peacock’s local NBC channel help page.

The local NBC channel is available with Peacock Premium Plus, includes ads, and is selected according to the streaming device’s geolocation. Regional availability and rights issues can affect the feed; Peacock may provide the national NBC feed instead in some situations.
Premium Plus therefore should not be treated as a general DVR upgrade. Peacock’s plan information lists Premium Plus at $16.99 per month as observed in August 2026, along with benefits such as live sports and events, downloads, and limited-ad viewing. It does not state that every live stream gains pause, rewind, or recording functionality: Peacock plans and pricing.
Peacock Channels
Peacock Channels are continuously scheduled streams, not ordinary on-demand playlists. The local NBC feed is an explicit no-pause example. For other Channels, do not assume that pause, rewind, or fast-forward is available across the entire service; functionality can vary by channel and playback environment.

Pause, rewind, restart, and DVR are different
- Pause: Temporarily stops the current playback session.
- Time-shifting: Lets you watch from a delayed point while the event is still live.
- Rewind: Moves backward within an available live buffer.
- Restart: Begins a live program from an earlier point when that option is offered.
- DVR recording: Saves a program to a library for later viewing.
A service can offer pause or rewind without offering a personal recording library. Do not interpret a pause button as proof that the program has been permanently saved.
Peacock through YouTube Primetime Channels
Peacock purchased through YouTube Primetime Channels is a different distribution and playback environment from the standalone Peacock app. In a June 29, 2026 announcement, YouTube said viewers could pause and rewind live Peacock events or matches. The announcement also said a separate YouTube TV subscription was not required.
That announcement said personal DVR recording was not supported at launch. It should not be used as proof that the standalone Peacock app offers identical controls—or as proof that the launch position remained unchanged after that date.

YouTube’s general live-DVR documentation explains that live playback can support pausing, rewinding, and continuing, with limitations such as very long streams and the inability to seek to a point before the stream began: YouTube’s live-DVR help. Location-dependent Primetime Channel content may also require verification: YouTube location settings.
How to check whether your stream supports pause
- Open the live program in Peacock.
- Press the remote’s Play/Pause button or the center/select button to reveal playback controls.
- Look for a pause icon and a timeline. If they are absent, the stream may not support pausing.
- Check whether the program is in the Channels section and whether it is the local NBC feed.
- Look for a replay or on-demand version if the live stream cannot be paused.
Device labels differ between smart-TV apps, streaming sticks, phones, tablets, browsers, and game consoles. If you subscribe through YouTube Primetime Channels, watch the program in YouTube and use YouTube’s controls rather than assuming the standalone Peacock app’s behavior applies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if the pause button is missing
- Confirm that you opened a live stream rather than an on-demand replay.
- Check whether it is a Peacock Channel or the local NBC channel.
- Try bringing up controls with both the Play/Pause and select buttons, depending on your remote.
- Try the same stream in another supported device or a web browser.
- Update the Peacock app and your device software.
- Close and reopen the app.
- Use an official replay or on-demand version when available.
- If you subscribed through YouTube, open the channel in YouTube instead of the standalone Peacock app.
These steps cannot override a rights restriction. If the local NBC channel is the stream, the missing pause control is expected rather than a problem with your Premium Plus account.

Can you leave Peacock paused and return later?
A pause command may hold a live stream temporarily, but it is not a dependable long-term recording method. The stream may end, the app may refresh or crash, the device may sleep or lose power, or the live playback buffer may expire. Switching channels, losing internet access, and rights restrictions can also interrupt the session.
For a long interruption, use an official replay, an on-demand version, or a separate DVR service where available. Peacock has not established a universal maximum pause duration, rewind window, or standalone-app DVR feature for all live programming.
Does Premium Plus solve the pause problem?
No—not universally. Premium Plus provides access to benefits including live sports and events and is required for Peacock’s local NBC channel, but it does not override that channel’s explicit no-pause rule. Live sports, live events, and Channels may also contain ads even when a plan is marketed as having limited ads.
Choose Premium Plus for Peacock’s catalog and eligible live programming, not because it guarantees DVR-style controls on every stream. If your main requirement is recording live channels for later, a dedicated live-TV service such as YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, or Fubo may be worth comparing. Verify each service’s current prices, channel lineup, regional availability, and DVR terms before subscribing.
Bottom line
In the standalone Peacock app, the safest answer is: it depends on what you are watching. On-demand content can generally be paused. Some live events may offer pause or rewind. The local NBC live channel cannot be paused, fast-forwarded, or rewound, and Peacock does not promise a universal live-TV DVR experience. Peacock through YouTube Primetime Channels is different: YouTube announced pause and rewind for live events or matches, but not personal DVR recording at launch.
