For a continuous stream, use playback or playout software to choose and sequence your videos, send that program to an encoder that supports AMF, then configure the encoder for YouTube’s live ingest settings.
What AMD AMF does—and what it does not do
AMD describes AMF as a framework for accessing AMD GPU multimedia capabilities, including video encoding, decoding, conversion, processing, and scaling. As AMD puts it, “The AMD Advanced Media Framework (AMF) SDK provides developers with optimal access to AMD GPUs for multimedia processing.” AMD GPUOpen’s AMF SDK page currently lists AMF SDK v1.5.3 and requires AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2 or newer; check the page for changes before choosing a driver or updating a production system.
AMF is an encoding component, not a video-library manager, playlist scheduler, or live platform. Your playback or playout application must select the files and deliver a continuous program to an encoder; that encoder must then send the live feed to YouTube. The exact connection, menus, and automation depend on the software you choose. AMD’s AMF documentation and YouTube’s live guidance do not specify a universal playlist-to-live recipe or a ready-made AMF command line, so consult the current documentation for each application rather than assuming a setting or command applies across tools.
Choose between streaming a library and uploading a finished video
For a live, continuous program
Use playout software to sequence the library and provide a continuous feed to an AMF-capable encoder. Configure that outgoing feed for YouTube Live, then monitor the encoder and YouTube’s stream-health information while it runs. A file encoded with AMF is not live merely because it was encoded: live playout and the YouTube ingest connection are separate parts of the workflow.

For a video viewers can watch on demand
Encode a finished file and upload it through YouTube Studio instead of sending it as a live feed. YouTube’s upload recommendations include an MP4 container and variable-bitrate encoding. Those are file-upload recommendations, not the live-ingest requirements described below. See YouTube’s upload encoding settings when preparing an upload.
Build the live workflow around your chosen software
- Check the system combination. Confirm that your specific AMD GPU, operating system, driver, and encoder application support the AMF codec and options you plan to use. AMF’s general capability does not establish identical codec support or controls across all cards, drivers, and applications. AMD’s current SDK and driver information is on its AMF SDK page.
- Prepare the library and playback order. Use a playback or playout application to choose the files, arrange them, and determine how playback continues at the end of the sequence. Check that the application can provide a continuous output to your encoder. Playlist behavior and exact configuration are application-specific.
- Connect playout to an AMF-capable encoder. Set up the feed in the chosen encoder using that software’s current documentation. Select AMF only if it is exposed and supported for your exact system and intended codec. Do not assume a command line or menu path from another application will work.
- Set YouTube-compatible live output. Choose an ingest protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and color format based on the YouTube recommendations and the supported options in your software. Guidance follows below.
- Enter the stream URL and key. YouTube’s Live Control Room ordinarily detects resolution and frame rate automatically. You can create a custom stream key to select settings manually; enter the stream URL and key in the encoder. Keep the key private. See YouTube’s instructions for managing live stream settings.
- Test and monitor. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Include audio and movement similar to the planned program, check YouTube’s stream-health messages, and monitor the feed during the event. Do not wait until an important broadcast to discover a playlist handoff, audio, or encoder problem.
Set the encoder for YouTube Live
YouTube’s live encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, HEVC, and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Select only a codec and protocol that your particular GPU and encoder application expose and that YouTube accepts for the stream.

Bitrate: match codec, resolution, and frame rate
Use the current YouTube table for the combination you plan to send. Examples on the page, whose publication year is not stated, include:

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not measurements of AMF performance or of your internet connection. The table can change, so check it before configuring a stream. Use CBR for the live feed and choose the bitrate for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; also make sure your connection can sustain it. YouTube advises testing connection speed and running a representative test stream.

Keyframes and protocol
Set a two-second keyframe interval when your software allows it; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Prefer RTMPS where available. A correct AMF encoder selection does not replace these ingest settings: they describe the feed YouTube receives.
Color and dynamic range
For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit. Its HDR guidance recommends H.265 and 10-bit. Do not assume HDR is available just because a GPU supports AMF: confirm that the exact GPU, driver, encoder application, and YouTube ingest configuration support the required combination.

Test the whole program, not only the encoder
- Play a representative sequence, including transitions or playlist handoffs, for long enough to reveal interruptions.
- Check that both picture and audio reach YouTube, and include movement and sound similar to what the actual program will contain.
- Watch YouTube stream-health messages and address warnings before going public.
- Confirm that the encoder bitrate remains within the stable upload capacity of the connection; a speed test alone does not show that a long stream will remain uninterrupted.
- Protect the stream key. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live settings and update the encoder.
Copyright and YouTube policy still apply to prerecorded libraries
Using a library as a live program does not make its contents exempt from copyright or YouTube rules. Use footage, music, narration, and other material you own or are authorized to stream, and check the permissions for every item in a playlist. YouTube may detect or restrict content during a live stream. Also consider whether the channel’s overall programming offers meaningful original value; simply looping existing material does not guarantee monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s current policies and rights for your specific content before broadcasting.
