That distinction matters: dropped frames usually point to the connection between your encoder and the platform, while buffering can happen on viewers’ devices or networks even when your stream reaches the platform cleanly.
Find which part of the stream is failing
Before changing settings, compare what you see with what the platform and viewers report. Check the encoder preview, a local recording if you have one, the platform’s live dashboard, and viewer reports. Each gives evidence about a different stage.
- Problem in the encoder preview or local recording: investigate the game capture, sources, audio routing, and encoder workload.
- Platform health warning or an ingest error: check the platform’s required codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio/video configuration.
- Encoder output looks right but the platform stream does not: investigate the upload path and the platform’s ingest connection.
- Only some viewers report buffering: consider their connection, device, location, and the stream’s playback compatibility before changing your capture setup.
For YouTube, the Live Control Room health messages can help distinguish a format problem from an issue elsewhere in the path. YouTube also recommends checking the encoder preview, CPU load, local archive, and outbound internet connection when troubleshooting. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.
Why is my stream dropping frames?
In OBS, dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. This is different from a game that looks choppy in the local preview: dropped frames are a transmission symptom, so begin with the network path rather than buying a graphics card.

- Open OBS Stats while streaming and check the dropped-frames figure. Review the OBS log after the stream for connection and network warnings.
- Test reliable upload capacity while the stream is active, not just download speed. YouTube says total stream bitrate must fit available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Account for other uploads and, where applicable, a primary and backup stream; other people sharing the network can reduce the capacity available to you. See YouTube Streaming tips.
- Compare your bitrate with the capacity that stays stable. If the connection cannot sustain it, reduce bitrate. If the picture still needs to be lighter, reduce resolution or frame rate as well, staying within the platform’s current recommendations.
- Check for interference. Temporarily test without a VPN or network-prioritization/security software if appropriate, and compare wired Ethernet with Wi-Fi when you suspect wireless instability. Ethernet is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Retest one change at a time. This helps show whether a lower bitrate, a different connection, or a software setting actually improved the dropped-frame rate.
OBS documents Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing, as well as dynamic bitrate, as possible diagnostics or mitigations. Dynamic bitrate can reduce quality when bandwidth falls; it may help avoid some dropped frames but does not repair an unstable connection. Use the options only if they apply to your OBS version and operating system, and verify the result in Stats. The OBS connection troubleshooting guide explains the relevant checks.
Why does my stream keep disconnecting?
Repeated disconnects can come from an unstable upload path, software interfering with the connection, or a platform-side ingest problem. Separate them before changing several settings at once.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- OBS reports network drops or disconnects: check upload stability, VPN/security software, and network congestion. Lower the bitrate if it exceeds what your connection can sustain.
- The platform reports an ingest or format warning: open the live dashboard’s health details and correct the setting it identifies.
- A third-party encoder will not start a YouTube stream: YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to obtain a new stream key and update the encoder. Never show the key in screenshots or public logs; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
When replacing a key, update it in the encoder’s stream settings and keep it private. If the platform still rejects the stream, follow the specific health message rather than repeatedly changing unrelated video settings.
Why is my stream lagging or buffering for viewers?
Buffering is not the same as encoder-side dropped frames. Your stream can reach YouTube without dropped frames while some viewers still buffer because their internet connection, device, or location differs from yours. YouTube notes that lower latency may mean more playback buffering; low latency is most useful when you need to interact with viewers in near real time.

- Ask whether all viewers are affected or only people on particular devices or connections.
- Check the stream from a separate device and network rather than relying only on the creator preview.
- If the stream is stable for you but difficult for a broad range of viewers, consider lowering bitrate or resolution to improve compatibility, accepting the corresponding reduction in image quality.
- Choose latency according to the stream’s purpose. Prioritize lower latency for active interaction; for a broadcast where immediate replies are not important, a less aggressive latency setting may reduce playback buffering.
For YouTube’s latency options and their trade-offs, see Manage live stream settings and YouTube’s buffering troubleshooting guidance.
Why does my stream look or sound bad?
If the fault appears in the encoder preview or local recording, the problem is likely before the stream leaves your computer. Inspect sources and processing first; if the local output is clean but the platform version is not, check platform health and the transmission path instead.

Picture problems
- Confirm the intended game or capture source is active and framed correctly. Check for a duplicate, cropped, or obscured source.
- Look at encoder workload and CPU load. If the encoder cannot keep up, reduce workload by lowering frame rate or resolution, or use a less demanding encoding configuration supported by your platform.
- Make a short local recording and inspect it. A recording that already shows stutter or poor image quality points toward capture, source, or encoder settings rather than viewer bandwidth.
- For a YouTube configuration warning, verify codec, bitrate, progressive video, frame rate, keyframe interval, and the number of audio/video streams against YouTube’s requirements.
Audio problems
- Confirm the correct microphone and game-audio devices are selected and routed to the intended tracks or mix.
- Check that the source is not muted, disabled, or overwhelmed by another audio source; monitor levels while speaking and playing.
- Record locally and listen back. If the recording is also wrong, correct the source or routing before troubleshooting upload.
- If YouTube reports an audio format issue, check the sample rate, channel configuration, and audio stream count against its current guidance.
What bitrate and encoder settings should I use?
There is no single bitrate that suits every platform, resolution, frame rate, codec, and connection. Use the requirements for your actual platform and ingest protocol, then confirm that your stable upload capacity has room for the stream.
For YouTube RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a keyframe interval of two seconds (not over four seconds). It publishes bitrate ranges by resolution, frame rate, and codec. As one specific example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60 AV1/H.265; these are YouTube recommendations, not universal minimums or settings for every platform. Check the current table before configuring a stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
