Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo run an ambient channel from OBS, copy the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, enter them in OBS, add a looping media source, then test the feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room before relying on it. The stream key is a credential—not a public channel identifier—so keep it private. A 24/7 session also needs a computer and internet connection that stay on, and you remain responsible for the rights to every sound and image you broadcast.
Before you begin: check channel eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming well before you plan to launch. See YouTube’s live streaming requirements and its guidance on enabling live streaming.
You will also need OBS installed, a video or playlist you have the right to use, and an upload connection capable of sustaining the chosen stream settings. There is no universal OBS bitrate preset established for every ambient source or connection; choose output settings to suit your source and available upload bandwidth, then test them.
Connect OBS to YouTube with your stream key
- Create or select the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live. Select the Stream tab for a continuous setup, or select a scheduled stream if you have created one. In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube uses the key like a password and address that lets an encoder send a feed to the correct live stream. Follow the current YouTube encoder setup instructions.
- Enter the details in OBS. Open Settings → Stream. Choose YouTube if it appears as a service. If you need to configure it manually, choose a custom server, paste YouTube’s stream URL into the server field, and paste the key into the stream-key field. OBS recommends keeping default settings unless you have a reason to change them; use settings appropriate to your source and upload rather than assuming one configuration fits every channel. See the OBS streaming guide.
- Keep the key secret. Do not show it in a screen recording, public tutorial, or shared document. If someone else sees it, a channel owner or manager can reset it in the Live Control Room; replace the old value in OBS with the new key.
- Check the OBS preview before sending. Confirm the scene is visible and correctly framed, and that the audio meters move when sound should be playing. A silent or blank preview is easier to fix before YouTube is receiving the feed.
Make the ambient video repeat
Choose the source setup based on whether you want one asset to repeat or a rotation of files. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes looping for a single media file and playlist looping with VLC Video.

| Approach | Best for | What to set up |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One ambient video and its audio repeating continuously. | Add a Media Source, select the local file, and enable its Loop option. |
| VLC Video source | A rotation of multiple ambient files. | Install VLC, add a VLC Video source, choose the files, and enable Loop Playlist. The source is not available unless VLC is installed. |
In OBS, add the source to the scene, arrange its framing, and check that the image fills the intended canvas without an unexpected crop or black border. If audio is part of the scene, listen to the start and the loop transition; a file that repeats visually can still have an abrupt audio gap or level change.
Test the feed, then start the live event
- Run a short test first. OBS encourages testing before a real stream. Check the video, audio, framing, and whether the source restarts as expected when it reaches the end.
- Prepare the event in advance. YouTube advises encoder users to set up ahead of time—its guidance says at least two hours before an event—and to start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. Open the Live Control Room and wait for its preview so you can catch connection or content problems before viewers arrive. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- Verify the viewer experience. Check that the watch page works from your channel or watch page and on a mobile device, and monitor both audio and video. Confirm the stream is actually live in the Live Control Room; a running OBS status alone does not confirm that YouTube is presenting the event as intended.
- Start deliberately. Start streaming in OBS, verify the incoming preview in YouTube, and start the event in the Live Control Room when that workflow calls for it. OBS’s Quick Start Guide also recommends a test stream before depending on a setup.
- End both sides intentionally. When ending, stop the YouTube stream or event and the OBS encoder as directed by the workflow you selected. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not establish that a continuous stream longer than 12 hours will be archived as one complete replay. If a dependable replay matters, check the current Studio behavior and consider ending and restarting sessions within the documented archive window.
Plan for a real 24/7 session
OBS sends the feed from your computer to YouTube, so a 24/7 broadcast depends on the computer, OBS, the media source, and your internet connection remaining available. Sleep settings, operating-system restarts, power loss, encoder crashes, and upload interruptions can all stop the feed. Test the exact machine and scene you intend to use for a longer run, and make sure the audio and visual source will continue looping unattended.

Do not treat the live stream as your only copy of the program. YouTube’s documented automatic-archive statement covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed complete replay for longer sessions. Keep your original media and verify the archive in Studio if you need a replay.
Copyright and other interruption risks
YouTube’s terms put responsibility for rights on the person providing live content: “The Live Content must comply with the YouTube Community Guidelines.” They also say the creator must have the necessary rights for worldwide use of live content, including music licensing rights. Read the YouTube Terms of Service and confirm permissions for every element in the stream, including background music, artwork, footage, and any material included in a loop.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A track can still be interrupted even if you have a licence when the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel. Before broadcasting, obtain permission whose scope expressly covers livestreaming and any archive you intend to keep, retain the licence terms or permission, and ask the rights holder whether allowlisting is needed. “Royalty-free” or “licensed” by itself does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and whether a livestream restriction has applied within the previous 90 days. If this is the channel’s first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Recheck that the server URL and key came from the same stream in the Live Control Room, that the key was pasted into the correct field, and that OBS is using the selected YouTube service or the intended custom-server setup. If the key was exposed or reset, update OBS with the replacement.
- The source does not repeat: For a single file, open its Media Source properties and check Loop. For a playlist, confirm you are using VLC Video, VLC is installed, and Loop Playlist is enabled.
- The video is blank, cropped, or silent: Inspect the OBS scene preview, source visibility and framing, then check the audio meters and listen to the output. Make sure the selected media file contains the expected audio and that the source is not muted.
- The live preview or watch page is not ready: Keep the test feed running while you check the Live Control Room preview and the viewer-facing page. YouTube’s advance setup and pre-event encoder timing are intended to leave time for this check.
- YouTube interrupts the stream over matched content: Review the affected material and its licence, including whether the permission covers livestreaming and archives. Ask the rights holder about allowlisting; possession of a licence alone may not prevent an automated interruption.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded ambient program live on YouTube without keeping OBS and a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, not a camera feed.
