To send a backup feed from a second FFmpeg encoder, use the backup ingestion destination YouTube provides for the same live stream—not a second key created by assumption. Configure the backup encoder to match the primary feed, then test rollover by stopping the primary encoder before the event. YouTube recommends keyframes every four seconds or less and does not support open GOP.
What YouTube means by a backup stream key
“Backup stream key” is often used to describe the backup destination, but YouTube’s API documents a primary ingestion address and a separate backup ingestion address. YouTube says the backup address can receive the same content as the primary at the same time. The API also supplies a stream name; depending on the encoder, you may enter the URL and stream name in separate fields or combine them as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Set up the second FFmpeg encoder

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select the stream. Copy its server URL and stream key or destination details. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that identifies the stream and instructs creators to enter the URL and key in their encoder. Set up your encoder for live streaming

Configure the primary encoder with the primary ingestion address. Configure the second FFmpeg encoder to send the same program to the backup ingestion address for that stream. Match the primary and backup settings: frame rate, resolution, video bitrate, codec, and keyframe frequency. YouTube’s health guidance identifies mismatches in these settings as a secondary-stream problem. For the documented RTMP setup, use supported H.264 video and closed GOP. If you choose encrypted RTMPS transport, copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and use it with the stream key. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. If a connection fails with certificate or timeout symptoms, check that the URL begins with

Before the event, preview the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder and checking that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. What to verify between encoders

FFmpeg command-line limits
YouTube’s official guidance cited here does not provide a verified FFmpeg command for sending to the backup destination. The exact output URL format and options depend on the installed FFmpeg version, its protocols and muxers, and how you supply the stream URL and name. Confirm those details against the documentation for your FFmpeg build; do not assume an unverified example command is safe for a live event.
Do not apply YouTube’s HLS-specific backup URL pattern to RTMP or RTMPS. HLS uses a different hostname and a distinct copy parameter for its redundant copy; those rules are not RTMP/RTMPS instructions. YouTube HLS ingestion

Troubleshoot backup-feed problems

YouTube reports a secondary-stream mismatch: Compare the two encoders’ resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, codec, and keyframe frequency, then align them.

YouTube reports open GOP: Change the encoder to closed GOP.

RTMPS fails with a certificate or timeout symptom: Verify that the copied destination is an RTMPS URL. If needed, try port 443 as YouTube suggests.

The backup does not take over in your test: Confirm that the second encoder is sending to the backup destination for the selected stream, inspect its connection and stream settings, and repeat the rollover test by stopping the primary encoder.

You are configuring HLS: Follow YouTube’s HLS-specific destination instructions rather than substituting an HLS URL pattern into an RTMP/RTMPS setup.
