Use FFmpeg’s tpad filter to add a black video pause to each clip before concatenating them. If you want silence during the pause, pad each clip’s audio with apad as well. The example below inserts two seconds after each clip; as written, it also adds a pause after the final clip.
Insert a black pause and silence between clips
This example assumes each input has one video stream and one audio stream. It adds two seconds of black video and matching silence after both inputs, then joins the video-and-audio pairs with the concat filter:
ffmpeg -i one.mp4 -i two.mp4 -filter_complex "[0:v]tpad=stop_mode=add:stop_duration=2:color=black[v0];[0:a]apad=pad_dur=2[a0];[1:v]tpad=stop_mode=add:stop_duration=2:color=black[v1];[1:a]apad=pad_dur=2[a1];[v0][a0][v1][a1]concat=n=2:v=1:a=1[outv][outa]" -map "[outv]" -map "[outa]" output.mp4
The filter graph adds padding to each segment first, then passes the paired video and audio segments to concat. This requires filtering and encoding; it is not a stream-copy operation. FFmpeg’s documentation describes tpad as adding frames or cloning the last frame, and apad as adding silence. See the FFmpeg 8.1 tpad reference and FFmpeg filters documentation.
Leave the final clip unpadded
If the pause is needed only between videos, do not apply tpad or apad to the last segment. For two inputs, pad the first pair, keep the second pair unchanged, and concatenate the four labeled streams in order. For example, replace the second clip’s padding branches with:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
[1:v]null[v1];[1:a]anull[a1]
Then retain the same final concat inputs: [v0][a0][v1][a1]. The null and anull filters pass through video and audio without adding padding. For a longer sequence, apply padding only to segments that have a following clip.
Choose the pause’s picture and sound
Black screen or held frame
stop_mode=add:color=black adds solid-color frames, making a black pause. To freeze the last picture instead, use stop_mode=clone with the desired stop_duration. These are different visual choices; neither changes the audio by itself. The available tpad modes and options are documented in the FFmpeg 8.1 API reference.

Silence or continuing audio
tpad affects video only. In the example, apad=pad_dur=2 extends each audio segment with two seconds of silence so the sound pauses with the picture. If you want music or narration to continue across the black screen, do not pad that audio segment with apad; construct or mix the audio separately to suit the intended result. Check that audio and video durations align, especially when source streams have different lengths.
Check your inputs and adapt the command
- Inspect the stream layout. Use
ffprobeon each file to confirm which video and audio streams are present. The example selects[0:v]and[0:a]—one video and one audio stream per input. Change the selections and concat settings if a file has no audio, multiple audio tracks, or a different layout. - Set the pause duration. Change
stop_duration=2andpad_dur=2together to use another two-matched duration. Keep video and audio padding consistent when you want synchronized silence. - Choose whether the ending pauses. The original command pads both clips, so the output ends with a gap. For pauses only between clips, leave the final segment unpadded as shown above.
- Review the output. Play the result through each join and check the picture, sound, and final ending. The illustrative command has not been verified against your files; stream layouts, timestamps, codecs, and durations can affect compatibility.
Why not use the concat demuxer or stream looping?
The concat filter is appropriate when the segments need filtering and re-encoding. FFmpeg’s FAQ on concatenating video files distinguishes this from the concat demuxer, which reads files sequentially and is suited to stream-copy workflows when the inputs have matching stream properties. The demuxer requires compatible streams, codecs, time bases, and related properties; inaccurate duration metadata or streams of different lengths can cause timestamp artifacts or gaps. Consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation before using it. It does not insert a designed black-and-silence interval for you.

Likewise, -stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely; it does not create a pause. Build the pause in the filter graph, and handle looping as a separate operation. See FFmpeg’s command-line documentation for -stream_loop.
Troubleshooting
- “Stream specifier … matches no streams.” The selected audio or video stream is absent or labeled differently. Inspect the file with
ffprobe; remove the audio branch for video-only inputs and use a matching concat configuration. - Unexpected pause at the end. The example pads every segment, including the last. Leave the final segment unpadded when only inter-clip pauses are wanted.
- Audio does not pause with the image. Video padding alone adds no silence. Add an
apadbranch for the corresponding audio segment, or deliberately mix continuing audio. - Joins fail or show timing glitches. Check that the concat inputs are in video/audio pair order, that all segments provide the stream types declared by
concat, and that source timing and durations are usable. The concat demuxer also has compatibility and duration constraints; it is not a drop-in replacement for this filtered workflow. - The filter is unavailable. FFmpeg builds and documentation can differ over time. Check the installed build’s filter list and its local help for
tpadandapad; the linked online documentation may be updated after your build was released.
