Choose an app, browser, or camera-mounted prompter
There are two practical approaches. An app or browser page on a phone, tablet, or other screen is a simple option if you can position it near the lens. A dedicated prompter places text in front of the camera using a display or reflective beamsplitter glass, but adds mounting and compatibility considerations. A dedicated product is not required for streaming. Elgato Prompter is one hardware example, not a universal requirement; check its current camera and computer compatibility before buying. Prepare a script you can deliver aloud
Write for speaking, not silent reading. Use conversational wording, short sentences, and clear transitions. Break the script into sections or cues so you can find your place after a pause or interruption. There is no universal ideal script length or scroll speed: both depend on the speaker and the material.

- Keep the wording easy to scan at a glance.
- Leave room to pause, look away briefly, or respond if your live format requires it.
- If you are likely to depart from a word-for-word script, use an outline or section cues rather than trying to catch up with a fast-moving block of text.
Position and configure the prompt
- Place it close to the lens. Position a phone, tablet, or display as near the camera lens as your setup permits. With hardware, follow the model’s instructions for the camera mount and display.
- Set readable text. From your normal speaking position, adjust font size, line spacing, and brightness until you can read without leaning toward the screen. Elgato’s setup guidance also discusses eye-level positioning and adjusting text appearance and scroll speed.
- Choose a scroll mode and pace. Start slowly, read aloud, and adjust the speed to your natural delivery. OBS Teleprompter documents autoscroll, manual, and follow modes; use the mode your software actually supports. Its documentation is at OBS Teleprompter.
- Check text orientation. A reflective-glass system may require horizontally flipped text so it reads correctly in the reflection. A screen-only setup may not. Check the prompter software’s mirror or flip setting rather than enabling it automatically.
With a computer-connected model such as Elgato Prompter, follow that product’s manual for attaching the correct backplate, mounting the camera, connecting the device, installing Camera Hub, and configuring its display. If Camera Hub does not show the expected screen, Elgato’s troubleshooting guidance says to use an extended desktop rather than a mirrored display: Camera Hub troubleshooting. Check that the lens does not touch the glass and that the camera support can carry the combined rig. Elgato documents supplemental 1/4-inch support mounting for setups where the ball head cannot support the prompter and accessories; support needs depend on your equipment. Use a teleprompter with OBS
The simplest arrangement is often to run OBS on the streaming computer and read the script from a separate phone, tablet, or prompter display positioned near the camera. OBS captures the camera as usual; the prompt does not need to appear in the broadcast. If you want an on-screen or browser-based prompting workflow, confirm how the chosen tool interacts with your OBS version, operating system, scene, and display arrangement. OBS Teleprompter documents autoscroll, manual, and follow modes, but its documentation does not establish one overlay setup that works for every configuration.

- Open the script on the separate prompt device or in the prompting software you have chosen.
- Frame the camera with the prompt as close to the lens as practical.
- Check the OBS preview to ensure the camera framing is right and the script is not accidentally captured in the scene.
- Read several minutes aloud while monitoring the camera view and audio. Adjust placement and scroll pace before starting the live broadcast.
Rehearse the complete live workflow
Run through several minutes using the real camera position, prompt, microphone, and streaming software. This helps reveal whether the font is readable, whether your eyes move noticeably away from the lens, and whether the scroll keeps pace when you pause. Watch a recording or preview rather than relying on how the setup feels while you are reading.
- Confirm the script is loaded at the right place and that you can pause or recover your position.
- Check camera framing and audio in the streaming software.
- Verify the selected stream destination and account eligibility using the platform’s current instructions.
- If your format uses a stream key, confirm you have selected the correct one and keep it private.
Platform integrations vary by software and can change. A vendor’s features page lists workflows for Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, as well as custom RTMP destinations; it also notes that TikTok Live depends on TikTok eligibility. Verify current app support and platform requirements rather than assuming a feature is available to every account: Teleprompter.com features.

Troubleshoot common teleprompter problems
