To run Kahoot! trivia during a YouTube Live stream, host the game on the computer you use for the broadcast and share its screen to YouTube. Viewers watch the game on the stream and participate through Kahoot!’s player flow. YouTube’s own Live Chat polls are a separate feature: they collect responses in chat rather than connecting to a Kahoot! game.
Before you go live
- Check YouTube eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days; the creator must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Choose and prepare the Kahoot! Find the game in your Kahoot! account and confirm the host controls and player instructions in the current interface. Kahoot!’s remote-hosting guide recommends checking bandwidth guidance when planning for a large audience: How to host kahoots remotely.
- Pick the broadcast route. YouTube documents webcam, mobile, and encoder workflows. Its webcam Live Control Room screen-sharing option requires a connected webcam and microphone; an encoder is an alternative for a more production-intensive setup, not a Kahoot! requirement. See YouTube’s live-streaming guide.
- Schedule and test if useful. Try the exact screen-sharing path before the audience arrives so you can check what viewers see and confirm game audio and your microphone are understandable.
Start the Kahoot! game and share it safely
- Start hosting in Kahoot! Open the game and start a live hosting session. Kahoot! recommends showing questions and answers on players’ devices for remote hosting.
- Decide what to share. Kahoot!’s guide says the scoreboard and correct answers appear only on the host’s screen. Share only the game view needed by your audience, and avoid exposing host-only information if you do not want viewers to see it.
- Go live on YouTube. In the webcam workflow, open Live Control Room, start the broadcast, choose Share screen, then select the entire display, a window, or a browser tab. The exact controls differ if you use an encoder or another YouTube workflow. YouTube’s instructions are at Share your screen during a live stream.
- Explain how to take part. Before starting a question timer, tell viewers where to join and how to submit answers. Join steps, PIN display, available question formats, and account-plan limits can change; check the current Kahoot! host interface rather than relying on old instructions.
- Keep the pace audible. Kahoot! advises not speaking over the timer music. Wait until answers are in before talking, or lower or mute game music so your instructions remain clear.
Kahoot! game or YouTube Live Chat poll?
Use Kahoot! when you want a hosted game experience with trivia and a shared game screen. Use YouTube’s native poll when you want viewers to respond directly in Live Chat. The documented YouTube poll flow is to create a poll at the bottom of the chat window and end it to see results there; it is not documented as a connection to Kahoot!. See Create a poll in live chat.
| Option | Where the interaction happens | What the official guidance establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Kahoot! hosted game | Game hosted separately; viewers see the shared game on the stream and participate through Kahoot!’s player flow. | Kahoot! recommends live hosting and screen sharing for remote play, and names YouTube Live as a service suitable for publicly sharing the hosted screen. Host scoreboard and correct answers are shown only to the host. |
| YouTube Live Chat poll | In YouTube Live Chat. | Create the poll from the bottom of the chat window and end it to see results in chat. The documentation does not establish a Kahoot! integration. |
Plan for delay, audience size, and visibility
A shared-screen game and a chat poll use different participation paths, so explain the route before asking for answers. The official guidance cited here does not provide a quantitative latency comparison or a current Kahoot! participant cap. For a large remote audience, Kahoot! recommends checking its bandwidth guidance; do not assume a particular audience size will work without checking the current requirements.
Review the shared screen before revealing host controls. Because Kahoot! places the scoreboard and correct answers on the host’s screen, the selected screen, window, or tab matters. If you use an encoder or a different YouTube broadcast route, confirm its source-selection controls separately.

Troubleshooting common problems
- You cannot start a YouTube livestream: check channel verification, livestream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the creator-age requirement in YouTube’s current eligibility guidance.
- Viewers cannot see the game: confirm that screen sharing is active and that you selected the intended display, window, or tab. If using YouTube’s webcam sharing workflow, ensure a webcam and microphone are connected.
- Viewers hear music over your instructions: pause between questions before speaking, or lower or mute Kahoot! timer music.
- The stream shows host-only information: stop or change the share source and choose a view that does not expose the host scoreboard or answers.
- A large audience has trouble participating: review Kahoot!’s current bandwidth guidance and check the host interface for applicable participation limits; the cited guidance does not establish a numeric cap.
- You expected a YouTube poll to appear in Kahoot!: YouTube Live Chat polls are a separate interaction. Create and end them in chat, or run the Kahoot! game through its own hosting and screen-sharing flow.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you also want a prerecorded YouTube channel stream to continue without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the video streams as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera, so it is a separate option from sharing a Kahoot! host screen during an interactive session.
