Treat the PC as one part of a continuity system: it does not protect a broadcast from power cuts, internet failures, overheating or YouTube interruptions. Test your complete setup for an extended period before relying on it.
What you need before you start
- A desktop in sound working condition, with an operating system and graphics hardware compatible with the OBS version you install.
- A stable internet connection with upload capacity to sustain your selected stream bitrate, plus headroom for normal variation.
- A verified YouTube channel eligible to go live. YouTube says the channel must have no live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days; first-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- OBS Studio, your podcast microphone or program audio, and a simple static visual or other necessary on-screen material.
- Rights to every audio and visual element you broadcast.
OBS lists Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as its published Windows baseline, but that is not a 24/7 performance guarantee. The OBS Project warns that “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Actual demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Use the OBS requirements page as a compatibility check, not as a used-PC buying specification.
Inspect and test the used desktop
Check the machine before installing
- Confirm its operating system can run the OBS release you intend to use; check the graphics adapter and whether OBS offers a usable hardware encoder.
- Inspect storage, ports, fans, vents and cooling. Dust, failing fans or unstable hardware can become a bigger concern during sustained operation than during a short test.
- Make sure the PC has the ports needed for your microphone or audio interface, and that the audio device works reliably.
- Do not choose a machine solely by its processor name or a minimum requirement. The workload depends on the actual sources, output settings and encoder.
Validate the whole workload
Install OBS and run Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. Add the real microphone or program audio, the intended visual, and only essential overlays. OBS notes that hardware encoding can move encoding work from the CPU to a GPU’s encoding component, but available encoders and quality vary by hardware generation. Do not assume an older graphics card will encode well without trying it.
Run a sustained private or unlisted test using the same scene, audio and output you plan to use. Watch OBS for dropped frames or other encoding/network warnings, and check YouTube’s stream health. Confirm the computer remains stable and cool and that the audio stays intelligible. OBS’s Quick Start Guide explains the initial setup and test workflow.

Enable YouTube Live and connect OBS
- Enable live streaming early. In YouTube, verify channel eligibility and enable live streaming; allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the encoder setup for the broadcast and obtain the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guidance for the current Studio flow.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube if available or the applicable custom server option, then enter the URL and key from YouTube Studio.
- Protect the stream key. It can be used to control your broadcast. Do not post it, show it in screen captures, or share it with anyone who should not be able to stream to the channel.
- Start with a preview or test broadcast. Check the picture, audio levels and YouTube stream health before making the stream public. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality.
Choose sensible podcast video and audio settings
For a low-motion podcast, a simple 720p, 30 fps output is a reasonable conservative starting point to test on an older computer; it is editorial guidance, not a YouTube minimum. If the computer and connection sustain more, test higher settings rather than assuming they will work. Choose bitrate to match the encoder, resolution and frame rate, and verify the result in YouTube stream health.

These are YouTube’s recommendations for the listed H.264 output modes, not a guaranteed residential upload threshold. Its encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. For a spoken-word show, prioritize clear, steady audio and a bitrate your upload connection can sustain. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings, which include recommendations by codec and output mode.

Keep the broadcast running through interruptions
Internet and encoder recovery
A local PC stream depends on both OBS and the connection to YouTube. Test what happens if the internet briefly drops and if OBS or the computer restarts. Monitor YouTube stream health during operation; YouTube’s live tips recommend testing failover and monitoring the stream. A wired Ethernet connection is a practical choice when available, but no universal upload-speed guarantee applies to Indian home connections. Test the actual ISP and bitrate at the location where the PC will run.
Power and heat
A UPS may bridge a brief power interruption, but its suitable capacity and runtime depend on the PC, network equipment and battery condition. No single UPS size or runtime can be recommended for every second-hand desktop. Test the equipment together, keep vents clear, and avoid placing the PC where heat cannot escape. A UPS does not solve a prolonged outage unless its runtime is sufficient or another power source is available.

Long broadcasts and archives
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise an automatic archive of one continuous 24-hour broadcast. If preserving the full program matters, make local recordings and plan separate broadcast segments; confirm current YouTube behavior before depending on an archive. Local recording also consumes storage and adds work for the computer, so test it alongside streaming rather than assuming a machine can handle both.
Copyright and prerecorded material
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It can replace the video with a placeholder, interrupt or terminate the broadcast, and may claim an archived stream after the broadcast ends. A license alone may not prevent a live interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Use original or properly cleared music, visuals and other material, and ask the rights holder about allowlisting where relevant. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

If your show includes prerecorded episodes, confirm you have permission for all included material and decide whether you are presenting it as a live broadcast or simply want continuous playback. YouTube’s encoder directory describes cloud services for continuous prerecorded video that do not require a dedicated PC; that is a different use case from hosting a genuinely live podcast with speech or camera input. Check current service terms and availability before relying on any third-party option.

A used desktop’s real 24/7 cost depends on its measured power draw and your local electricity tariff, as well as any purchase, repair and connectivity costs. There is no reliable single India-wide electricity price or operating-cost figure for an unspecified PC. If you want to estimate power expense, measure the actual setup’s wattage and use the tariff that applies to your premises.

The National Informatics Centre lists 2–4 Mbps dedicated bandwidth per stream for its hired-agency webcast scenario. That is not a universal YouTube bitrate recommendation or a guarantee about Indian household connections. For your own channel, use YouTube’s encoder guidance and test the sustained upload at the location and time you expect to stream. NIC webcast requirements.
