Yes. A Raspberry Pi can play a prerecorded video and send it to YouTube as a live encoder stream. You still need an eligible YouTube channel, a stream event and key from YouTube Studio, a Pi setup capable of encoding the chosen video, and enough upload bandwidth. Pi 5 encodes H.264 in software rather than with a dedicated hardware H.264 encoder, so test the exact media and settings before relying on it for a broadcast.
What you need to know before setting up the Pi
This is a live broadcast of prerecorded media, not a camera broadcast. The Pi plays the file and sends an encoded feed to YouTube; viewers see it as a live event. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and a stream key to connect the encoder to the event.
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream live: YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Its general eligibility guidance also says a person must be at least 16 to live stream. See YouTube’s encoder-stream setup guidance.
- A Raspberry Pi with local storage for the video, a reliable power supply, and a wired or stable network connection.
- Playback and streaming software that can loop the file and send an encoder feed to YouTube. The exact software and command depend on your Pi model, operating system, media codecs, and installed encoder build.
- The event’s YouTube ingest URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in screenshots, public scripts, or shared command history.
The YouTube eligibility and encoder procedure described here are general platform guidance, not India-specific rules. Set the event time using the time zone shown to your intended audience.
Choose an output the Pi and your internet connection can sustain
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations provide a starting range, not a guarantee that a particular Pi or connection will maintain the stream. Its baseline guidance recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), RTMP or RTMPS ingest, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709; its standard audio recommendation is stereo AAC at 128 kbps. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance when configuring your software.

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3–8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3–8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5–14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6–17 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s recommended ranges; they are not measured Pi performance results. Choose a bitrate your upload can sustain and leave roughly 20% of available upload bandwidth unused, as YouTube advises in its streaming tips. Measure upload speed rather than relying on advertised download speed. A 720p30 or 1080p30 target may be a more cautious starting point than a higher frame rate, but the result depends on the particular Pi, file, software, and network.
Account for Pi 5’s software encoding
Raspberry Pi documentation distinguishes Pi 5’s hardware H.265 decoding from H.264 encoding: Pi 5 uses software for H.264 encoding, and the documentation describes 1080p30 as achievable. That is not a promise for every playback-and-encoding workload. Test the complete combination of source file, output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and software on the board you intend to use. Raspberry Pi’s H.264 performance note compares Pi 5 software encoding with Pi 4’s hardware H.264 encoder; neither comparison establishes a guaranteed result for your stream.

Set up the YouTube event and get its stream details
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and select the encoder option. If live streaming is not enabled for the channel, complete YouTube’s eligibility and activation steps before the planned broadcast.
- Open the event’s encoder settings and copy its server URL and stream key. Prefer the RTMPS URL if your encoder supports it; RTMPS encrypts the RTMP connection using TLS. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Keep the key private. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube Studio before broadcasting, then update the encoder configuration.
- For a scheduled event, note the watch page and scheduled time. Scheduling can give viewers a page to visit in advance, but the Pi must still connect and send the feed when the event begins.
Prepare and test the Raspberry Pi workflow
Use local storage for the prerecorded file so playback does not depend on a separate network share. Choose software that can read the file, loop it if required, encode the outgoing video and audio, and send the feed to YouTube’s URL. The exact commands and menus vary by installed software; do not copy a command without checking its options against your installed version, the file’s codecs, and the chosen ingest settings.
- Prepare the final video and confirm that its picture and audio play correctly on the Pi. Make sure the file is stored locally and that there is enough free storage for it.
- Configure the playback/encoder software to use the event’s stream URL and key. Set H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate and output mode from the table that the Pi and network can sustain. Configure stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps if supported and appropriate for the source.
- Run a test using the same media, audio, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate planned for the public event. Observe whether playback is smooth and whether the Pi maintains the intended output; do not assume a successful short test proves a much longer run.
- Start the encoder ahead of the scheduled start, then inspect the incoming feed in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm both picture and sound in the preview and check YouTube’s stream-health indicators before making the event public or beginning the planned broadcast.
- During the event, monitor stream health and the Pi’s playback/network operation. When finished, stop the encoder cleanly. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops sending; see its encoder-stream guide.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks for prerecorded video
Using a prerecorded file does not change the need to have rights to the video, music, images, and other material in it. Before scheduling, confirm that you own or have permission to use each element in a live broadcast and that your use complies with YouTube’s policies. A live presentation is not automatically exempt from copyright claims, and permission to upload a video does not necessarily cover every use or territory. The sources cited here describe stream setup and technical settings; they do not establish a separate India-only copyright rule or guarantee monetization eligibility. Review the applicable rights and YouTube policies for your content before going live.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not accept the connection: Check that live streaming is enabled for the channel, that the selected event is the one you intended, and that the URL and key were copied correctly. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in Studio and update the encoder.
- The preview is unstable or reports poor stream health: Measure upload speed, lower the bitrate or output mode, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. Check the network during the test rather than assuming its usual performance will hold at broadcast time.
- The Pi struggles, drops frames, or produces uneven playback: Re-test with the exact file and encoder settings. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if necessary. Pi 5’s H.264 encoding is software-based, so do not assume a hardware encoder is available.
- Video appears but audio does not: Check that the source file has an audio track, the software is selecting it, and the outgoing audio configuration is compatible. Verify sound in YouTube’s preview before the event.
- The scheduled page exists but viewers do not see the live feed: A scheduled watch page does not send the video by itself. Start the encoder and confirm the incoming feed in Live Control Room.
DIY costs and the cloud alternative
A Pi workflow requires the board and the supporting power, storage, and network setup; the Pi also has to remain powered and connected while it is sending the stream. No current India hardware prices or measured Pi-versus-cloud cost comparison are established here, so check current local prices and compare them with how often and how long you plan to broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. It does not require a Pi or computer to remain on at home: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card required; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. For creators in India, UPI works as well as cards. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
