You can use a Raspberry Pi to send a camera feed to YouTube Live, but an unattended 24/7 stream is only as dependable as the Pi’s input, encoding workload, network, power, cooling, and recovery setup. Start with a modest video profile, confirm the Pi can sustain it, and test the failure-and-restart path before leaving it unattended. No model-by-model 24/7 performance guarantee is established here.

How the Pi-to-YouTube stream works

The chain is video source → capture or streaming software → encoded network stream → YouTube ingest → live broadcast. A Raspberry Pi Camera Module is one possible source; an existing camera or other suitable feed may also work. YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS ingest, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. The camera documentation for current Raspberry Pi systems uses rpicam-vid with compatible streaming tools, but its examples demonstrate camera and local/network streaming patterns—not a turnkey, officially supported YouTube 24/7 recipe.

Choose the workflow according to what the source already outputs. If it supplies a suitable H.264 stream, a stream-copy or remux approach may avoid re-encoding. If the Pi must encode the video, that adds workload; lower resolution or frame rate if the CPU, dropped frames, or YouTube stream health indicate it cannot keep up. Do not assume a particular Pi model can sustain a chosen profile without testing that model and input.

What you need

  • A Raspberry Pi compatible with the chosen camera or video input, plus the required capture hardware if the source does not connect directly.
  • A compatible camera source if needed. Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation describes supported Camera Module workflows.
  • A power supply appropriate to the exact Pi model. Raspberry Pi’s setup guide recommends 5 V at 5 A for Pi 5 and Pi 500, and 5 V at 3 A for Pi 4 Model B and Pi 400; check the guide for your model and setup.
  • A reliable network connection. Prefer wired Ethernet when practical; models without an Ethernet port may use a USB Ethernet adapter. Ethernet does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
  • Compatible boot media, usually a microSD card on many setups. Storage needs vary; a boot card does not store the live stream unless local recording is configured.
  • A YouTube account with live streaming available, and a private place to store the stream key.

Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance is at Raspberry Pi getting started; its camera documentation is at Raspberry Pi camera software.

Choose a YouTube-compatible stream profile

YouTube’s current encoder guidance reviewed in 2026 recommends constant bitrate (CBR), H.264 video, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations include these combinations:

Video profile YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
480p30 4 Mbps
720p30 6 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps

YouTube’s stereo audio guidance recommends 128 kbps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not measurements of Raspberry Pi performance or guarantees about your upload connection. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings before configuring a stream, and measure sustained upstream capacity with headroom above the selected stream bitrate.

For a documentary or other mostly static camera view, 720p30 is a reasonable starting profile if the Pi and connection sustain it; use a lower profile if encoding or network health is poor. Motion, audio, source format, and whether the Pi has to encode all affect the result. YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the actual broadcast.

Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or prepare a live stream. YouTube’s interface labels can change, so follow the current Live Control Room prompts to select the stream’s ingest settings and obtain its ingest URL and stream key.
  2. Copy the ingest URL and key into the encoder or transport tool’s private configuration. Google’s API documentation defines the primary ingestion URL and stream name; some workflows use them in the form STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. The exact fields depend on the application.
  3. Keep the key out of screenshots, public repositories, guides, and shell history. Restrict access to configuration files and rotate the key if it is exposed.
  4. Configure the stream as a scheduled broadcast or continuous broadcast as appropriate, then verify in YouTube’s Live Control Room that the incoming stream is detected and healthy before making it public.

See Google’s liveStreams API reference for the ingest URL and stream-name concepts. Use RTMPS where the encoder supports it; YouTube describes it as a secure extension to RTMP.

Set up the Pi encoder and test it

Current Raspberry Pi camera documentation uses rpicam-vid, not the legacy raspivid command used in older instructions. Confirm the installed Raspberry Pi OS, camera interface, input format, and compatible streaming tool before copying commands from any tutorial. Raspberry Pi documents camera streaming with tools such as MediaMTX, MistServer, and go2rtc; those examples are not by themselves a complete YouTube deployment procedure.

FFmpeg can be used as an encoder or transport tool for RTMP/RTMPS workflows, but the command depends on the input device, codec, and build options. Do not paste an assumed device path or stream-key-bearing command from a generic example. Configure the input and chosen encoder for H.264, CBR, the selected bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval, and supported audio, then send it to the YouTube ingest endpoint. Desktop OBS may be unnecessarily heavy on a small Pi; its x264 guidance does not certify Pi performance.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  1. Capture a representative test: include the actual camera, normal lighting, movement, and audio conditions. If using an existing H.264 source, verify that its format is acceptable to YouTube before deciding whether to copy or transcode it.
  2. Start at a profile the Pi can sustain. Watch CPU load, encoder logs, dropped frames, and YouTube’s stream-health status while the feed runs for an extended test.
  3. Check audio sync and intelligibility, video motion, and stability at the intended resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
  4. If the encoder falls behind or health deteriorates, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as appropriate, then test again. A bitrate below YouTube’s recommendation may be necessary for a constrained link, but can affect quality; a bitrate above available sustained upload capacity risks instability.
  5. After a healthy test, schedule or start the broadcast in YouTube Studio and confirm that viewers receive the intended feed.

Make it recover unattended

A 24/7 stream needs more than a launch command. Run the encoder under a service manager that starts it at boot and restarts it after failure; retain logs and arrange monitoring or alerts so a silent failure is noticed. Test recovery deliberately before relying on it:

  • Disconnect and restore the network, then confirm the encoder reconnects and YouTube receives the feed again.
  • Disconnect and restore the camera or input, then check whether the capture process recovers or needs a restart.
  • Stop the encoder process and verify the service manager restarts it.
  • Reboot the Pi and confirm the service launches automatically with the correct configuration.
  • Review both local logs and YouTube stream health after each test.

A community FFmpeg/systemd project describes recovery for network loss, camera disconnect, encoder restart, and host reboot. Treat it as one implementation example, not a verified guarantee for every Pi, camera, or network. See the project documentation and adapt only after reviewing its configuration and testing it on your own setup.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not detect the stream Wrong ingest URL or key, unsupported transport, or encoder not sending Re-enter the current URL and key privately; check the encoder logs and use RTMPS if supported.
Stream health reports bitrate or connection trouble Upload capacity fluctuates or is too close to the stream bitrate Measure sustained upstream capacity, reduce bitrate or resolution, and retest over the intended connection.
Dropped frames or delayed video Encoding workload exceeds what the Pi/input path sustains Check CPU and encoder logs; reduce resolution or frame rate, or avoid unnecessary re-encoding if the source already provides suitable H.264.
Camera feed disappears Input disconnect or capture process failure Check camera connection and logs; test whether capture recovers after reconnect, and configure service-level restart behavior.
Stream stops after power or network interruption No automatic restart or reconnect path Use a boot-managed service with restart behavior and test reboot and outage recovery before unattended operation.
Unexpected reboot or instability Power supply mismatch, heat, or other hardware/software issue Verify the model-appropriate power supply, cooling and logs. No cross-model thermal or 24/7 reliability guarantee is established.

Copyright, programming, and monetization are separate issues

A technically healthy stream does not establish that you have the right to broadcast its video or audio. Use footage, music, and other material you own or are licensed to use; check the license scope for continuous live use. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate from the Pi’s encoder settings. Reused-content rules may affect monetization even when material is not removed for copyright, so review YouTube’s current channel monetization policies and copyright guidance before building a channel around looping material.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is simply to keep uploaded video live on YouTube, StreamNeo avoids leaving a Pi or home connection running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera. It runs on YouTube only.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream keeps running with your computer off.
  • Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • It automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required. There is one free day per account.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and StreamNeo team support. The product is the same on every plan; only the billing length changes. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo or see plans; start the free first day at StreamNeo registration.
