FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can read a text playlist and send compatible gaming VODs to a YouTube Live event one after another. That creates a sequential feed, but a finite playlist does not, by itself, guarantee that playback will restart forever. The workflow below covers playlist preparation, YouTube ingest settings, testing, and the limits to check before relying on a long-running stream.
Before you start
- Install an FFmpeg build and keep the VOD files at stable local paths while streaming.
- Make sure your YouTube channel is verified, has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the person streaming is at least 16. Confirm current eligibility in YouTube Studio; see YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Create or select a live event in YouTube Live Control Room so you can obtain its stream URL and key.
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text list and presents the files sequentially as though their packets had been muxed together. It works at the packet level, so it is not a general-purpose way to combine arbitrary files with different stream layouts or encoding properties. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Inspect the VODs for compatibility
Before making the playlist, check that each file has compatible video and audio streams, codecs, and time bases. If the VODs differ, you may need to normalize or transcode them; there is no single safe filter chain for every set of source files. The concat demuxer uses duration information to calculate timestamps for following files, so inaccurate duration metadata can produce artifacts. Its script supports a duration directive to override a duration when necessary.
Keep the files available at the paths you put in the script. Moving, renaming, or deleting a file can prevent FFmpeg from opening it when playback reaches that entry.

Write the concat playlist file
Create a plain-text file, for example gaming-vods.ffconcat, with one file directive for each VOD, in playback order:

file '/media/game-two.mp4'The optional marker must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 on the first line, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark, for automatic format recognition. File paths that contain spaces or special characters need quoting or escaping according to FFmpeg’s concat-script syntax. That quoting is separate from any quoting your command shell requires. Sequential playback is not endless rotation
The playlist above tells FFmpeg to process the listed files one after another. It does not establish that the list will automatically restart after the last file. Do not assume a finite concat script is an endless loop, or rely on a repeat option without verifying its behavior with your FFmpeg version and actual media.
If continuous rotation is required, test the repeat mechanism with the exact FFmpeg build and VODs you plan to use. Confirm that it returns cleanly from the final file to the first, maintains timestamps and audio/video continuity, and continues producing output for the intended duration. The cited concat documentation describes sequential concatenation, not a guaranteed forever-cycle command.

Create the YouTube event and protect its stream key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the event and open its streaming setup.
- Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key into your FFmpeg configuration.
- Keep the key private: treat it like a password. Do not show it in a screenshot, publish it in a terminal transcript, or share it in an untrusted location. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s streaming settings. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
Use the event’s ingest protocol and URL as configured in YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP; its general encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS codec, bitrate, keyframe, and audio settings.
Choose encoder settings for the source and ingest
Match output codec, resolution, and frame rate to the event and the footage. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a keyframe interval no longer than four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the relevant row in the YouTube live encoder settings rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.

These figures are YouTube’s published guidance on its English live encoder settings page, accessed October 3, 2026; they are not a guarantee of stream quality or delivery. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, while considering the content’s motion and the applicable YouTube table row. YouTube’s current guidance also lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Confirm supported settings in the current event setup before streaming.
For the FFmpeg output, configure the encoder to match the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode and target, audio format, and two-second keyframe interval. The exact command depends on your FFmpeg build, source streams, and whether you are copying or transcoding media; a generic command can silently fail to meet the event’s settings. Validate the actual output and ingest in YouTube’s preview rather than assuming the command line guarantees compliance.

Test the playlist and monitor the live feed
- Start with representative VODs, including files with the most movement and audio variation.
- Watch the YouTube Live Control Room preview and check that both picture and sound arrive.
- Observe transitions between files for gaps, timestamp artifacts, abrupt audio changes, or missing streams.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and verify the event and any local archive you intend to keep.
- If you intend to repeat the playlist, keep the test running long enough to observe the return from the final VOD to the first.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing and monitoring; its live streaming troubleshooting guidance also helps diagnose ingest and playback problems. A clean preview at the start does not establish that a long-running playlist will continue indefinitely.
Use RTMP/RTMPS unless you specifically need HLS
For a conventional gaming VOD feed, follow the RTMP/RTMPS ingest settings supplied for the event. HLS is a separate ingest workflow, not a set of extra requirements to apply to RTMP. YouTube documents HLS for cases such as HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP; it requires TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and segments from 1 to 4 seconds. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion setup.
Common problems and fixes

Copyright and reused-content checks for gaming VODs
Before streaming a VOD, make sure you have rights to its game footage, music, overlays, and other included material, and review any applicable game publisher permissions. YouTube can apply copyright rules to live content; a live stream should not be treated as cleared merely because the recording was previously uploaded or is being replayed. Repeating prerecorded material also does not, by itself, establish that a channel complies with YouTube’s monetization policies for reused or repetitive content. Review YouTube’s current channel monetization policies and copyright guidance before building a recurring schedule.
