How to Stream a Pre-Recorded YouTube Live Playlist from Google Drive

Use Drive videos in a YouTube Live event by preparing files for an encoder, arranging the sequence, and testing the full stream. Drive playlists are not a documented native live input.

You can use videos stored in Google Drive as the source material for a YouTube Live broadcast, but YouTube does not document a native way to select a Drive playlist as a live input. The reliable approach is to make the videos available to an encoder—preferably as local files—arrange them in playback order, then send the resulting program to a scheduled YouTube Live event using its stream URL and key.

What “stream a playlist from Google Drive” means

Google Drive can store and play individual video files. YouTube’s documented live workflow takes a feed from an encoder; it does not describe choosing a Drive folder or playlist as the event’s input. In practice, the playlist is a sequence assembled in your encoder or playback setup—not a built-in Drive-to-YouTube integration.

A Drive link that plays in a browser is not necessarily a dependable encoder input. For predictable playback, download or otherwise make the source files available locally, then test the complete sequence before broadcasting. If you intend to use a remote Drive file directly, treat that as an unverified workflow and test permissions, sign-in requirements, playback, and buffering well before the event.

Before you start

  • Confirm live-stream eligibility: YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions within the past 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. YouTube’s live-streaming tips
  • Check rights: Make sure you have permission to broadcast every video, music track, image, and other element in the program. A video being stored in your Drive does not establish that you own its broadcast rights. Copyright claims or other restrictions can affect a live stream and its archive.
  • Prepare compatible media: Drive supports multiple video formats, including WebM, MP4-family formats, MOV, AVI, WMV, FLV, MTS, and OGG, but playback support varies by device. Confirm that your chosen encoder or playback software can decode the files you plan to use. Google Drive video playback help
  • Plan the whole sequence: Decide the order, transitions, audio levels, and what should happen at the end. Test the playlist’s ending behavior rather than assuming the encoder will loop or stop in the way you expect.

Set up and schedule the YouTube Live event

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
  2. Choose Manage, then schedule a stream. Set the title, description, privacy, and other event details. Scheduling creates a watch page that you can share ahead of time, and viewers can choose to receive reminders.
  3. In the event’s encoder settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. Add them to the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event.
  4. Keep the event private or unlisted while testing if that suits your setup, then select the intended privacy setting before the public broadcast.

See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for its current Live Control Room guidance and stream credentials.

Make a playlist from the Drive videos and send it to YouTube

  1. Make reliable source files available. For the most predictable setup, download the videos from Drive to the computer running your encoder or playback software. Confirm each file opens and plays from beginning to end. A Drive browser preview alone does not prove the file is ready for continuous encoder playback.
  2. Arrange playback order. Add the local files to a playlist or production workflow supported by your chosen playback software or encoder. The official YouTube and Drive guidance does not prescribe a particular playlist application or establish native Drive playlist ingestion, so check the software’s own supported formats and behavior.
  3. Configure the outgoing stream. Enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS where available. Use settings supported by both your encoder and the destination; YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance covers its recommended video and audio configuration.
  4. Start a test feed. Start playback and the encoder, then wait for the event preview in Live Control Room. Check that the correct video is visible, audio is present and clear, the picture is not stretched or cropped, and transitions work as intended.
  5. Start the event. Once the preview and event details are correct, start the live event in YouTube. Keep the encoder and playback sequence running, and monitor the broadcast for audio, video, and connection problems.
  6. End the broadcast deliberately. Stop the event in YouTube and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check the resulting video and its visibility after the event.

Check bandwidth, playback, and Drive limitations

YouTube advises that your total outgoing stream bitrate must fit within your available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. For example, if the configured stream bitrate is 5 Mbps, plan for at least 6.25 Mbps of stable upload capacity (5 Mbps divided by 0.8), rather than using a connection whose full capacity is already needed by the stream. Other devices and applications sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. Use YouTube’s encoder settings and connection guidance, preview the event, and test before going live.

Google’s computer help page lists 1920 × 1080 as the maximum playback resolution for Drive video and notes that playback can be affected by internet quality and speed. A file may begin playing while processing is still underway, before it is viewable on other devices or by people it has been shared with. Drive video playback also requires third-party cookies to be enabled. These limits matter if you were considering using the Drive browser player or a remotely shared file as part of the source path. If using a remote Drive file despite these uncertainties, verify the sharing permissions and sign-in state on the machine that will feed the encoder. Run the entire playlist under the same conditions as the event and watch for buffering, access prompts, interruptions, and unexpected playback termination. This is operational caution based on Drive’s documented playback constraints, not a documented YouTube integration.

Choose between a computer, dedicated encoder, or cloud service

For a one-off event, a computer running playback software and an encoder is the accessible route, but it must stay powered, connected, and able to play the sequence for the duration. For recurring or unattended prerecorded streams, dedicated hardware and cloud tools are alternatives. YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists the AJA HELO Plus, a standalone H.264 encoder, and describes its optional PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. The directory also lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded YouTube videos. The listed capabilities do not establish direct Google Drive playlist integration for either option; verify current features, supported inputs, availability, and cost with the provider. Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
You cannot start a live event The channel is not eligible or live streaming has not finished activating. Verify the channel and check for restrictions. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours before the event.
The event preview has no feed The encoder is not sending to the right event, or its credentials/settings are wrong. Confirm the stream URL and key in the encoder against the scheduled event, then restart the encoder and wait for the preview.
The Drive video works for you but not on the broadcast machine The file may still be processing, permissions may not permit access, the session may require sign-in, or third-party cookies may be blocked. Use a verified local copy where possible. Otherwise check access from the actual playback machine and test the complete sequence before broadcast.
Playback buffers or the stream drops frames The source playback or outgoing upload connection may be unstable, or the configured bitrate may exceed available bandwidth. Prefer local source files, reduce competing network use, and ensure the outgoing bitrate fits within upload capacity with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
The picture is stretched, cropped, or unexpectedly low-resolution The source aspect ratio, encoder output settings, or Drive playback resolution may not match expectations. Check the source and encoder output before the event. If the workflow depends on Drive playback, account for Drive’s documented 1920 × 1080 maximum playback resolution.
The playlist stops or repeats unexpectedly End-of-playlist behavior depends on the playback or production software, not a native Drive-to-YouTube playlist feature. Test the exact sequence, transitions, and end behavior in a private or unlisted test event.
