You can run a continuous prerecorded YouTube stream from a Mumbai VPS by looping a video with FFmpeg and sending it to YouTube’s ingest server using RTMPS and your channel’s stream key. You manage the video, encoding, recovery, monitoring and VPS data allowance yourself; a Mumbai location does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream or the best route to YouTube. This guide covers a self-managed setup for one prerecorded feed, not a live camera production.
What you need before you start
- An eligible YouTube channel: YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the account holder must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility requirements before renting a VPS.
- A Linux VPS in Mumbai: Choose a plan for sustained CPU use and outbound traffic, not just its advertised port speed. A continuous stream needs enough capacity for both the encoder and the outgoing video feed.
- A source file you are entitled to broadcast: Check rights for both video and audio. YouTube may restrict or remove a stream that uses material you are not authorized to broadcast.
- FFmpeg: Install a build appropriate for your Linux distribution and encoding needs. The exact package, hardware-encoding support and service configuration depend on the VPS image and provider.
- Your YouTube stream key: Treat it like a password. Anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
How the stream gets from the VPS to YouTube
The publishing chain is source video → FFmpeg running on the VPS → YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains how to enter the server URL and stream key, check the Live Control Room preview, and stop the broadcast by ending the encoder transmission. YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol” in its RTMPS guidance.
Configure the stream settings
Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate
Set the output to a resolution and frame rate the VPS can encode continuously and the source can support. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include these common targets:
| Output | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or deliver the stream reliably. For other resolutions and frame rates, use the relevant row in YouTube’s current encoder settings table.

Use CBR and suitable keyframes
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for H.264 and a keyframe interval of two seconds; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Set the encoder’s output to match the selected bitrate, resolution and frame rate. The exact FFmpeg options depend on the chosen codec and whether the VPS uses software or hardware encoding, so validate the resulting stream in YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators rather than assuming a command is correct for every server.
Allow network headroom
YouTube recommends about 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. A VPS’s advertised port speed does not establish its sustained throughput, route quality to YouTube’s ingest server, or monthly transfer allowance. Check actual plan terms, including whether traffic is throttled after a quota.

Provision the Mumbai VPS and prepare the source
- Select a Mumbai location and Linux image. Confirm that the provider offers the location on the plan you intend to buy. Treat location as a geographic choice, not proof of a faster or more reliable route to a particular YouTube ingest server.
- Check CPU, outbound transfer and recovery options. Compare sustained outbound capacity, monthly traffic, post-quota throttling, CPU performance for your target encoding settings, restart options and support terms. A plan that can open a high-speed port may still be unsuitable for continuous streaming.
- Install and validate FFmpeg. Use the provider’s supported installation method for your Linux image. Confirm that the installed build can read your source file and encode at the target settings; test at the intended resolution and frame rate before leaving it unattended.
- Upload the source file and test playback. Verify that the file is complete, readable and has the expected audio and video. Confirm that looping it does not introduce an unwanted gap, abrupt cut or audio issue.
- Protect credentials and files. Store the stream key in a restricted configuration file or secret store. Do not place it in a world-readable file, public repository or logs. YouTube documents how to reset a compromised key in its stream-key guidance; update the encoder with the replacement after resetting it.
Connect FFmpeg to YouTube and start a test
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Choose the option to stream with an encoder, then copy the server/ingest URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. Keep the key private.
- Configure FFmpeg to loop the source and publish over RTMPS. Use the ingest URL and key from YouTube, and match the chosen H.264 bitrate, CBR mode, resolution, frame rate and keyframe interval. This is a deployment outline, not a universally validated command: paths, quoting, codec options and available hardware encoders vary by host.
- Start a test transmission before scheduling continuous operation. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Inspect picture, audio, aspect ratio, pacing and the transition when the source loops. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream; consult its streaming tips for preflight guidance.
- Confirm the destination and visibility. Check that the stream is public, unlisted or private as intended, and that its title, description and other broadcast details are correct.
- Run the encoder under a recovery mechanism and monitor it. A process supervisor can restart FFmpeg if the process crashes, but it cannot repair a failed VPS, missing source file, blocked outbound connection or YouTube ingest problem. Monitor the VPS and YouTube stream health instead of treating a process restart as full redundancy.
Estimate traffic and check provider limits
At a steady bitrate of R Mbps, outbound data is approximately R × 10.8 GB per day in decimal units, before protocol overhead. Over 30 days, that is roughly R × 324 GB. For example, a 14 Mbps stream works out to about 151 GB per day and 4,536 GB over 30 days, before overhead. This is arithmetic based on bitrate and duration, not a provider allowance or a measured result. Audio, protocol overhead and other VPS traffic can increase the total; check the provider’s quota and throttling terms against your estimate.
As one provider-published example, Melbicom advertises 2 TB of monthly traffic for its KVM-1/WIN-2 plans, 4 TB for KVM-2/WIN-4 and 5 TB for higher tiers, with speed limited to 10 Mbps after the included allowance. These are the provider’s stated terms, not independent performance results; verify the current Melbicom VPS plan details before purchase. A post-quota limit can be a serious constraint: YouTube’s listed recommendation for 720p at 30 fps alone is 8 Mbps, while a 1080p at 30 fps recommendation is 14 Mbps.

Test, monitor and plan for failure
- Check YouTube’s preview and health messages: They can reveal ingest or stream-quality problems during a test. Recheck audio and video after changing a source or encoder setting.
- Test recovery deliberately: YouTube recommends testing encoder failover. A single VPS and a single publishing path remain single points of failure; a supervisor that restarts FFmpeg does not provide a second server or route.
- Watch transfer and CPU use: Sustained encoding can overload a CPU, and sustained output can exhaust a monthly traffic allowance. Check actual resource use and provider terms while the stream runs.
- Plan archives separately: YouTube’s encoder article says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single uninterrupted stream will be archived indefinitely; verify current YouTube limits and plan stream segmentation if archives matter.
Common problems and fixes
YouTube does not receive a signal
Recheck the ingest URL and stream key in YouTube Studio, confirm that the VPS can make outbound connections to the selected endpoint, and inspect FFmpeg’s error output without exposing the key. If the key may have leaked, reset it in YouTube and replace the value configured on the VPS.
The preview buffers or stream health reports trouble
Check that the VPS has sustained outbound capacity above the stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended headroom, and that its monthly quota has not triggered throttling. Compare the output bitrate and encoding load with the plan’s actual CPU and transfer limits; a port-speed headline alone does not answer either question.

The VPS cannot encode in real time
Reduce the output resolution, frame rate or encoding workload, or move to a plan with suitable CPU or encoder support. Retest at the intended settings and confirm the resulting picture and stream health in YouTube’s preview.
The video or audio breaks at the loop point
Inspect the source file and test repeated playback before starting a long broadcast. A loop command cannot fix a damaged file, missing audio track or an edit that has an audible or visible discontinuity.

FFmpeg stops and does not resume
Check the process logs, source-file path, disk availability and network connection. A process supervisor may restart a crashed encoder, but failures in the VPS, file storage, outbound network or YouTube ingest need their own diagnosis and recovery plan.
Self-managed VPS or managed cloud looping?
A VPS gives you direct control over the encoder and stream settings, but you take responsibility for the source, credentials, process recovery, monitoring and transfer limits. StreamNeo is a managed alternative for looping uploaded video to YouTube; it is not a camera-broadcast workflow. StreamNeo’s product information is at streamneo.com.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free trial at app.streamneo.com/register.
